Song of the Day - Rainy Days and Mondays

The Carpenters - Rainy Days and Mondays
Album: Carpenters (1971)

I'm sure somewhere in the world it's raining on Monday... not here though, it's going to be a delicious 33 degrees (we work on Celsius here on It's My Kind of Scene). Anyway, it's not like anyone likes Mondays, right? You've got to go back to work after not long enough of a fun weekend. Monday can suck it. Moving right along, it's also the last day of February and with the Top 300 Songs of the 2000s all but a beautiful lingering memory, we've got to come up with something fun for March. Perhaps a step back in time?

11. Ezra Furman and the Harpoons - Hard Time in a Terrible Land (NEW)

12. Lady Gaga - Born This Way

Wait a minute... that's not Lady Gaga! Your powers of perception may have noticed that there's a nine year old girl singing instead of LG, but they wouldn't have tipped you off to the fact that this nine year old girl is the only thing keeping the song in the countdown.

13. She Wants Revenge - Take the World

14. Foo Fighters - Rope (NEW)

15. The Waifs - Angela

16. The Verses - Teeth

17. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero's - 40 Day Dream (NEW)

Song of the Day - Wild Horses

The Rolling Stones - Wild Horses
Album: Sticky Fingers (1971)

For some unknown reason, 'Wild Horses' has been stuck in my head all weekend. Not the Rolling Stones version though... and definitely not Susan Boyle's cover. I'm talking about the one recorded by The Sundays which was featured in the movie Fear. The scene it's used in has Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon riding a rollercoaster and doing... other stuff. This is still a PG blog, right? Oh, I guess I figured out what the unknown reason is too... I watched Fear last week. So, we're going back to a previously used tradition here on It's My Kind of Scene. We feature the amazing original above AND the fun cover version below. It's a little bonus just for you. Enjoy!

Song of the Day - Seven Nation Army

The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
Album: Elephant (2003)

Or, as we can now call it... the #1 song of the 2000s. You can read all about it and the songs that made the top 10 right here. What are you waiting for?

Top 300 Songs of the 2000s, #10 - 1

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls... all four of you out there in cyberspace reading this blog, it's the post you've been waiting your life (three weeks) for; the top 10 songs of the 2000s. Over the last twenty-nine posts we heard 290 songs that made us laugh, made us cry, or made us do neither of those two things but maybe do some other stuff instead. Music's biggest stars came out to play, (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rihanna, Britney Spears, OutKast) as did some critical favourites (Cat Power, Damien Rice, Bat For Lashes, Antony and the Johnsons). But now we're ready to say hello to the ten best songs of a decade chock full of good ones. Of course I'm ready, I already know what they are! The question is, are you ready? You'd better be, because here we go...

#10 - Crazy In Love (2003)
by Beyonce ft. Jay-Z

Yeah, but I still don't understand,
Just how your love can do what no one else can...

Rolling Stone had it at #3. Pitchfork placed in one spot back at #4. NME went all out and declared it the #1 song of the 2000s. You can understand how 'Crazy In Love' charts within the top 10 of virtually every end of decade countdown out there. It really is that good. Beyonce showed in the delivery of one spectacular song, one of what would become many, that she was the Diana Ross of Destiny's Child... someone that wouldn't be stopped from achieving solo success by anyone or anything. Somehow she's managed to deliver time and time again, becoming one of the highest selling and most respected female artists of the 21st century. But nothing tops her debut. 'Crazy In Love' is a party song, an empowering anthem, one of the greatest love songs in pop form and really, it's one of the greatest songs of the 2000s. However, it's not the greatest song of the 2000s.

Song of the Day - Call Me

Blondie - Call Me
Album: American Gigolo (1980)

Oh, hey there... it's It's My Kind of Scene's #1 Woman of Rock - Debbie Harry!! We've been sticking with music from this new decade and the last for quite some time, so let's bust out some classics! With the Top 300 Songs of the 2000s coming to a close today, I think it's time we put some focus back on vintage tunes for at least a week. But saying that, tomorrow will probably be Ke$ha aka rapper Key Dollar Sign Ha. Don't forget, that previously mentioned countdown ends today (!) so stay tuned... it's gonna be good. For now you can sit back, relax, sip on an ice cold beverage and then ROCK OUT to Blondie. Enjoy!

Top 300 Songs of the 2000s, #20 - 11

OutKast: they love Lucy Liu.

Welcome to the penultimate edition of the biggest countdown It's My Kind of Scene has put together! That's right, the end is nigh for the Top 300 Songs of the 2000s. Today we meet the bridesmaids, ten songs that narrowly missed out on making the top 10. The brides, aka the top 10, we'll see those tomorrow. But first, the bridesmaids. Everyone likes the bridesmaids because generally they're single and ready to mingle... what? We're getting waaay off topic now, so let's hear some music!

#20 - Hey Ya! (2003)
by OutKast

If what they say is, "nothing is forever," then what makes,
What makes, what makes, love the exception?

OutKast's fifth and final song to make the list, and their biggest commercial hit, 'Hey Ya!' remains the funnest, most exciting track in their catalogue.

Song of the Day - Milk

Garbage - Milk
Album: Garbage (1995)

Much like Shirley, I'm waiting... waiting patiently for Garbage to release a new album. And then... then I'll wait to buy tickets to see them tour. And then... well, I haven't thought that far ahead. But I'll figure something out and it will be awesome. Ergh, I got nothing today. Just sit back and enjoy the magnificence that is 'Milk.'

Top 300 Songs of the 2000s, #30 - 21

Madonna: But you already knew that.

30 songs, that's all that's left boys and girls. We're just 29 songs away from revealing our #1... what's it going to be? I can tell you who it WON'T be. It won't be one of our next ten acts. Who are they? Let's find out...

#30 - Smile (2006)
by Lily Allen

Now you're calling me up on the phone,
So you can have a little whine and a moan...

She's come a long way. Well, as far as you can go with two quality albums... but her debut remains the greatest thing Ms Allen has graced our ears with.

Top 300 Songs of the 2000s, #40 - 31

Kelis: Bringing all the boys to the blog.

It listens to the next ten, or else it gets the hose again... ... ... ... what? But seriously, I'm not afraid to use the hose. Right now we're going to try and look on the bright side, losing ourselves in the music while we run after concrete to see what brings all the boys to the yard. Those are just some really (not) hard to figure out clues as to what songs are coming up next...

#40 - Best of You (2005)
by Foo Fighters

Has someone taken your faith? It's real,
The pain you feel, You trust, you must, confess...

Just one of the reasons why I'll always be excited to hear something new from the Foo Fighters. Plus the video... how could you hate? One of my favourites and a video that I feel is often overlooked and highly, highly underrated.

Song of the Day - All of the Lights

Kanye West ft. Rihanna and Kid Cudi - All of the Lights
Album: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010)

Can Rihanna do wrong? She's like a hit making machine, so it will be interesting to see how high 'All of the Lights' can go on the charts. The video was finally released last week to what was one of the highlights from West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (which really is a huge call, considering every song ranged from good to amazing), featuring not only Rihanna and Kid Cudi, but Fergie, Alicia Keys, John Legend, La Roux, The Dream, Elton John and more. None of the bonus acts get a feature in the video, but it's still good... very good. How good? Look for it to make a big debut on this weeks Top 20!

Top 300 Songs of the 2000s, #50 - 41

Arctic Monkeys: They think you'll look good whilst on the d-floor. Fools.

We've already seen 250 songs and now only 50 sweet, sweet tracks from the years 2000 - 2009 remain. There's only the best of the best from here on in. Any ideas about who had songs worthy of making the top 50 songs of the 2000s? You won't have to wait long to find out... here's the next ten.

#50 - Romeo (2001)
by Basement Jaxx

Cause you see my dear I have had enough,
Of keeping quiet about all this stuff...

The song, the video... it's all just so good. And Bollywood themed. How can you say no to a Bollywood theme.

Top 300 Songs of the 2000s, #60 - 51

Roisin Murphy: Teaching us new words... like 'Ramalama.'

Two rap classics, indie rock at its finest and a song good enough to push a former boy band singer into solo pop superstardom territory. There's also the true beginning of the biggest, most controversial act in music right now and a couple of random (by random I mean very good) indie songs. Oh... and a Rihanna song. What are they? You're about to find out.

#60 - Poker Face (2008)
by Lady Gaga

Russian Roulette is not the same without a gun,
And baby when it's love if it's not rough it isn't fun...

'Just Dance' was good, 'Poker Face' was epic. Since its release, there's been no stopping the Haus of Gaga. 'Poker Face' also taught us about bluffin' with our muffin, so it has that going for it too. Kudos.

Song of the Day - Someone Like You

Adele - Someone Like You
Album: 21 (2011)

One song has managed to do what many thought would be impossible in the UK by holding back the Gaga from claiming her fifth #1 single this week. The song? Adele's 'Someone Like You.' It jumps an astonishing forty-six places up the chart to claim the top spot and you've got to admit, it's a pleasant surprise. So, how did she manage to do it? How about that amazing performance at the BRIT Awards? The one above? Yep, that'll do it.

Top 300 Songs of the 2000s, #70 - 61

M.I.A: All she wants to do is BANG BANG BANG!!!

Our 2000s countdown is quickly coming to an end as we approach the top 50 songs of the 2000s. There's still two posts before we get to that point though and they are good... very good. Bring on the next ten!

#70 - Music Is My Hot Hot Sex (2007)
by CSS

Music is my boyfriend, music is my girlfriend,
Music is my dead end, Music is my imaginary friend...

Brazil's greatest contribution to popular music throughout the 2000s, CSS, aka Cansei de Ser Sexy, delivered two must have albums over the course of the decade. Their best song? 'Music Is My Hot Hot Sex.' One of the funnest, brightest party songs you'll ever hear.

Top 300 Songs of the 2000s, #80 - 71

Twice the Florence!

It's a bit Indie crazy for this edition, but you love Indie music, right? Yeah... you do. There's also artists from all of your favourite countries; America, Sweden, Australia, the UK... that's ALL of your favourite countries!! Whatever, it's way too hot to day. Too hot to think, too hot to write, too hot to do anything... except sit back and listen to ten fantastic songs from the last decade!

#80 - Hometown Glory (2007)
by Adele

Shows that we ain't gonna stand sh*t,
Shows that we are united.

Song of the Day - Sun Of A Gun

Oh Land - Sun Of A Gun
Album: Oh Land (2010)

YouTube are promoting Oh Land something fierce at the moment, so I thought I'd check out one of her songs. Initial thoughts moved in more of a Lykke Li than Lady Gaga direction which is good. Oh Land hails from Denmark, so I think it's more of European thing to be quirky and original, as opposed to US and Australian based electro sirens who go the Gaga route. 'Sun Of A Gun' flies by, leaving you wanting to hear more and more from another exciting act that looks set to make an impact in 2011. Have I said how good this year's been already?

Top 300 Songs of the 2000s, #90 - 81

Regina Spektor: Bringing back the Soviet Kitsch.

Arctic Monkeys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dixie Chicks and Pearl Jam all placed in our first section of the top 100 songs of the 2000s. Will these acts place again, or are they done and dusted for this countdown? Only time will tell, but what you do know (now) is that they won't be placing in today's edition. Nine out of the ten acts you're about to listen to are making their presence known for the first time... who are they? Let's find out...

#90 - Drive (2000)
by Incubus

Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there,
I'll be there...

Top 20 - 19 February, 2011

Skylar Grey: one to watch in 2011.

1. Dr. Dre ft. Eminem & Skylar Grey - I Need A Doctor (NEW)

2. Marina and the Diamonds - Living Dead

3. Adele - Set Fire To The Rain

4. Architecture in Helsinki - Contact Hight (NEW)

5. Clare Maguire - The Last Dance

Song of the Day - Love Out of Lust

Lykke Li: I'll follow her deep sea, baby.

Lykke Li - Love Out of Lust
Album: Wounded Rhymes (2011)

Thank you, Lykke Li. I was going to make The Strokes' new song, 'Under Cover of Darkness,' the song of the day, but I didn't really have much to say about it. I'm already losing interest since it's all so very same-y, you know? No, you love it... because it's The Strokes, right? Whatever, Lykke Li released another track off her highly anticipated new album, Wounded Rhymes, due February 28. Again, I don't have much to say other than it's three for three for Li, with 'Love Out of Lust' joining 'Get Some' and 'I Follow Rivers' in the 'excellent songs' realm.

Top 300 Songs of the 2000s, #100 - 91

Blink-182: All grown up.

BOOM! What's that sound? Why, it's the official start to the top 100 songs of the 2000s. I'd tell you to get excited, but you're already well past the point of excitement, right? Right. Many genres are being represented in our next set of songs; rap, country, rock, electronic, "punk," indie and pop. But what songs are they going to be? Let's find out...

#100 - Crying Lightning (2009)
by Arctic Monkeys

And I love that little game you have called, crying lightning...

Another band that are due for a 2011 release, Arctic Monkeys brought the goods in 2009 with the amazingly underrated song 'Crying Lightning.' This should have been a huge crossover hit for them, but it didn't even manage to place on US or Australian singles charts. Shame.

Song of the Day - Contact High

Architecture in Helsinki - Contact High
Album: Moment Bends (2011)

Architecture In Hesinki delivered a very welcome surprise yesterday in the form of new song, 'Contact High.' It follows on perfectly from 'That Beep,' joining it in the ranks of songs that will bring a smile to your face as soon as you start listening to it. May 8 sees the release of new album, Moment Bends (not Vision Revision as was previously reported), so make sure you mark it in your calendars. It's going to be an album you really need to own.

Top 300 Songs of the 2000s, #110 - 101

Mr. Gwyneth Paltrow and the rest of Coldplay.

Today's one of those 'special' days we were talking about, where you'll get two countdown posts instead of one. You will remember that these are the happiest days of your otherwise mundane life. I joke, I joke... ... ... ... or not. Moving right along, this is our last stop before THE top 100 songs of the 2000s, the best of the best. But there's still these ten songs to go, so let's meet the tracks that just missed out.

#110 - That's Not My Name (2008)
by The Ting Tings

They call me hell, they call me Stacey,
They call me her, they call me Jane...

This is how you make your debut... with a runaway pop smash hit that gets everyone singing along. It's even better if you're around a girl named Stacey or Jane. Or Her, if you happen to be in Germany or something.

Top 300 Songs of the 2000s, #120 - 111

Britney's last stand... on this countdown.

This could be my favourite post of the entire countdown. Well, the songs aren't my favourite (clearly, or they'd be the top 10 no?), but the post get extra props for being the only one that features a song from every year in the decade. That's right, one song from the year 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. Whatever, I think it's cool... here's the songs!

#120 - Hollaback Girl (2005)
by Gwen Stefani

So I'm ready to attack, gonna lead the pack,
Gonna get a touchdown, gonna take you out...

Brian Griffin - "I don't know what a Hollaback Girl is. All I know is that I want her dead." I can't say I feel as strongly as everyone's favourite talking dog, Brian.

Song of the Day - l.i.f.e.g.o.e.s.o.n

Noah and the Whale - l.i.f.e.g.o.e.s.o.n
Album: Last Night on Earth (2011)

Another exciting act with an upcoming album release, Noah and the Whale will drop Last Night on Earth March 7. The indie group had a UK top ten hit in 2008 with '5 Years Time,' and look to build off the buzz gained from that single with new track 'l.i.f.e.g.o.e.s.o.n.' It's not the most exciting comeback single, but then again, they're not the most exciting band. That's not a bad thing, it's just indie folk acts tend to be a bit more... mellow?

Top 300 Songs of the 2000s, #130 - 121

Lily Allen aka Rirry Arren.

Three posts remain before we hit the Top 100 Songs of the 2000s! So why waste time with my usual hilarious banter? Here's our next ten (awesome) songs!

#130 - Sway (2008)
by The Kooks

Say whatever you have to say, I'll stand by you.

Song of the Day - I Need A Doctor

Dr. Dre ft. Eminem and Skylar Grey - I Need A Doctor
Album: Detox (2011)

It seems like we already have our 'Love the Way You Lie' monster rap hit of 2011 and a new superstar in the making, Skylar Grey. If you read our recap of the Grammys, you'll remember that the 'Love the Way You Lie pt. 2' and 'I Need A Doctor' performance was our favourite of the evening, as the three artists listed above, plus Rihanna, delivered a powerful rendition of the two songs. With every release from Detox, Dr. Dre is showing that he could have his most successful album to date on his hands and 'I Need A Doctor' should place huge on singles charts around the world. Look for it to make an impact on It's My Kind of Scene's weekly Top 20 too!

Love without complications galore...

#139 - With Every Heartbeart (2007)

by Vampire Weekend

Half of the ring lies here with me,
But the other half's at the bottom of the sea...

by Klaxons

Light touch my hands, in a dream of Golden skans from now on...

#132 - Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) (2008)
by Beyonce

I got gloss on my lips, a man on my hips,
Hold me tighter than my Dereon jeans...

#131 - Come Away With Me (2003)
by Norah Jones

Come away with me,
And I will write you a song...

Grammy Awards 2011 Recap

Arcade Fire: Album of the Year winners!

Arcade Fire won Album of the Year. I think that needs to be repeated, because it still doesn't seem real... Arcade Fire won Album of the Year!!! That alone makes me give the 2011 Grammy Awards a big thumbs up. What else was good? The performances. Well, most of them. Janelle Monae, Eminem, Arcade Fire, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Mick Jagger brought the goods and made the night one to remember.

Lady Antebellum dominated with the track and album 'Need You Now,' walking away with Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Country Album of the Year, proving that country music remains a force to be reckoned with in the USA. Muse topped Pearl Jam to win Rock Album of the Year and Lady Gaga, while losing out on Album of the Year, took home Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Female Pop Vocal for The Fame Monster and 'Bad Romance' respectively.

After a pretty rough month, Christina Aguilera showed she still had it by performing alongside Florence Welch, Yolanda Adams, Jennifer Hudson and Martina McBride in a fantastic tribute to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. You could feel how happy each lady was to be a part of it and the smile on Florence's face while she boogied on down was just brilliant. Florence + The Machine sadly didn't pick up Best New Artist, but Esperenza Spalding's winners speech was well delivered (and it was just awesome that Justin Bieber didn't win).

What was the best performance of the night? Hands down, the combination of 'Love the Way You Lie pt. 2' with 'I Need A Doctor.' Rihanna, Eminem, Skylar Grey (aka the hot new artist to watch) and Dr. Dre were amazing and gave us a performance that will stay with us and propel 'I Need A Doctor' to the top of the charts.

A close runner-up though was another big collaboration, this time by new kids on the block (no, not the one with Donny Wahlberg) B.o.B, Bruno Mars and Janelle Monae. Janelle Monae deserves a special shout out for absolutely KILLING IT when it came time for her to unleash 'Cold War' on a very grateful audience.

That's it from me... what are your thoughts on the Grammys?

Song of the Day - White Limo

Foo Fighters - White Limo
Album: Untitled (2011)

It's not the official first single from their next album, but I'll take what I can get from the Foo Fighters and 'White Limo' is a fairly interesting (and pretty damn good) release from the band. Accompanied by a home-made video (with Lemmy as their driver!) the track rockets through at a rapid pace, distorted vocals and all. If you were let down by 'Wheels,' this should be enough to get you firmly back on board. So, what do you think of the 'White Limo?'
