We Live In A Political World

With each January comes the most important public vote of the year. A time when you must stand up and make your voice be heard. A time when your vote can make a difference. Of course, I'm talking about the vote for the JJJ Hottest 100! 2012 federal elections be damned, for this is a real opportunity for you to get behind the people you love and help them go down in history as one of the greatest acts in music today. Vote with your heart and pick ten songs that you really want to hear come Australia Day. In need of some suggestions/inspiration? Here are the ten tracks that It's My Kind of Scene voted for...

2011 Scene Awards - Album of the Year

Yeah, I made this in Paint. What of it?

Last day of the year means we've come to the point where we must give out our final award for 2011, Album of the Year. The past twelve months have been very kind to music fans. Some of our favourite acts have delivered career best records and new bands, singers and groups are popping up all over the world with attention-grabbing tracks.

Of course, no year is made up of only good news. The world lost one of its greatest young talents, with Amy Winehouse passing away far too early at the age of 27. Justin Bieber is still popular and Joe Jonas released some "music." Don't even get me started on the rise of dubstep.

Enough of the negativity though. This is all about the best the music industry provided for us throughout the calendar year. As a quick recap, here are your Scene Award winners so far;

Video of the Year - 'Lonely Boy' by The Black Keys
Australian Artist of the Year - Seeker Lover Keeper
Best New Artist - James Blake and Lana Del Rey (Tie)
Group of the Year - Seeker Lover Keeper
Man of the Year - Gotye
Woman of the Year - Kimbra

Now let's take a look at the ten albums that made the shortlist for Album of the Year!

CEREMONIALS
by Florence + The Machine

Read about Florence + The Machine's 2011 on It's My Kind of Scene:
Top 111 Songs of 2011, #3 - 'Shake It Out.'

What we said about Cermonials:
"Ceremonials as an album is better than Lungs. It's just the most epic thing to come out of a year full of awe inspiring concepts and grand ideas."
"The track [No Light, No Light] contains all of the elements that makes Ceremonials such a brilliant album; lyrics that read like a beautifully violent fairytale, epic choruses that attach themselves to your brain and never let go and Welch's soaring siren vocals that draw you deeper and deeper into her world."

Not only will you be reading about our top 10 groups (bands, collaborative efforts... anything that isn't a one man or woman show really), you'll also find out who we deemed to be the worst group of 2011. 2011 Scene Awards - Australian Artist of the Year

We Love... Sneaky Sound System!

Australian music reached new heights in 2011, with our local favourites (old and new) putting out a whole bunch of future classics throughout the year. Last year we clapped our hands as Sia took the crown. See what I did there? No. Ok. Well, who was the best of the best in the land of AUS this year?! There were eighteen potential nominees in my original list and I've cut it down to the ten acts that really delivered the goods in 2011. Let's meet them... now!

Architecture in Helsinki

2011 Release: Moment Bends
Architecture in Helsinki set the blogosphere alight with their new album, Moment Bends. Tracks like 'Contact High,' 'Escapee,' 'W.O.W' and 'Desert Island' have been on high rotation and hopefully a couple of them earn enough votes to make it big on the JJJ Hottest 100.

Art Vs. Science

2011 Release: The Experiment
These Sydney-based dance kings finally released their debut LP to almost universal acclaim and walked away ARIA Award winners in the Best Independent Release category. Their video for 'Higher' stands as one of the best of the year too!

#10 - The Truth
by Pnau

You say you lost your lover,
And that you miss your best friend...

When people ask me what dance music I'm into, my future response will sound a little something like, "anything that resembles 'The Truth' by Pnau." It's a mess of contradictions that I can't help loving. When the track begins, there's this feeling of triumph being played out through the music. You can lose yourself in it for a couple of listens and really get a feel for it. Once you've got that out of the way, you start listening to the lyrics. There's nothing triumphant about the lyrics at all. In fact, they're just a tad morose... and perfect. Nick Littlemore and Peter Mayes did good. How about the chorus? It's as anthemic a chorus as any big pop song of 2011 and leaves you ready to press repeat the second 'The Truth' comes to a close. Who needs Empire of the Sun? Long live Pnau!

#9 - Contact High
by Architecture in Helsinki

If one of these two walls could speak,
I'd turn the lights down long enough to hit repeat... babe.

Another song that left me instantly hooked, 'Contact High' had me at, "T-T-T-T-T-T-T-Touuuch." Annoyingly, I wrote something I thought was awesome about the song, but Blogger decided to make it disappear. Jerks. The jist of it was, Architecture In Helsinki go from strength to strength and evolve with each new release. 'Contact High' sees them grow into one of Australia's greatest exports and stands as their best single to date. Blogger... I am so mad at you right now.

#90 - How Deep Is Your Love
by The Rapture

Give me what I need to live,
Help me come to you.

#89 - Santa Fe
by Beirut

And whatever comes through the door,
I'll see it face to face, all by your place.

Beirut becomes the first act to land two tracks on the countdown with 'Santa Fe.' It comes complete with one of the weirdest videos I've seen all year, but we won't hold that against them. The song's so good, you forget you're even watching the video!

Music Video Mayhem - Avril Lavigne, Beyonce, Architecture in Helsinki

Beyonce wants to chain you up... like she would to a Hyena.

It's time for a some Music Video Mayhem! That's right, we've got three competitors with three brand spankin' new clips, but only one can come out on top. Today, Avril Lavigne takes on Beyonce and Aussie favourites, Architecture in Helsinki. Will Avril be smiling at the end? Will Beyonce 'Run the World?' Or can AIH escape with a victory? Let's find out.

Avril Lavigne - Smile

Remember when Avril was a wanna-be punk rock skater girl who would because she could, but she don't and she won't? Neither does she. Now, if you put some earplugs in (or alternatively just push the mute button) this isn't THE most offensive video. Lavigne looks super pretty and appears to have found the fountain of youth (yeah, I just saw the new Pirates of the Caribbean) as she's 26 going on 17. Even the idea for the video isn't THE worst out there. Completing the love heart was a nice touch... but how did she find something to perfectly meld the pieces back together. Maybe she's a witch. Anyway, if you're going to actually listen to the song, just be warned it's possibly the worst single that the former 'Complicated' singer has ever released. "Last night I blacked out, I think... What did you, what did you put in my drink? I remember making out and then..." Seriously? You're better than this.

Beyonce - Run the World (Girls)

Beyonce rides a horse, beats up a car, BULL! Beyonce crucifies a blonde (symbolism of her desire to kill Gaga for making her say those bizarre lines in 'Telephone?'). LION! Combination of military and tribal fashion, Beyonce does the chicken dance, group dance, Converse shoes, chains, HYENAS! Beyonce gives us the finger, gets sprayed with water, loves goooold, shows us fierce, group dances in sexy yellow, goes to war and then dances some more... this time in green. Could have used more bull, lion and hyena. Seriously, only B could get away with the unnecessary, two second use of a lion. Final verdict? Still amazing.

Architecture in Helsinki - Escapee

Typical indie fare and a notable step down from the awesomeness of 'Contact High.' Not that this isn't good, it's beautifully shot and makes you want to start a band so you too can be as cool as Architecture in Helsinki. But you won't, so don't even bother. Trust me, I tried. Sadly, Engineering in Dusseldorf never took off like it should have. 'Escapee' is a good way to spend three minutes, but it's also fairly forgettable. Which means...

WINNER - BEYONCE

She runs the world... for now.

Song of the Day - Desert Islands

Architecture in Helsinki - Desert Islands
Album: Moment Bends (2011)

There's still over a month until the album's release, but we've got our second taste of Moment Bends with the excellent 'Desert Islands.' Not as instantly infectious as 'Contact High' but give it a couple of listens and you'll be hooked. If Moment Bends isn't on your must-buy list yet, it should be now. 2011 is Architecture in Helsinki's year. Woot!

Music Video Mayhem: The Strokes, Pnau, Architecture in Helsinki

Are The Strokes big winners?

That's right, it's that time of the week where we look at three new music videos and pit them against each other in the ultimate face-off. Last week saw Ke$ha defeat Lady Gaga and Dr. Dre (yes, the mind boggles) and now The Strokes, Pnau and Architecture in Helsinki battle it out for your entertainment. Let's take a look at the videos.

The Strokes - Under Cover of Darkness

I found myself tiring of 'Under Cover of Darkness' and how quickly it was being so very, very overrated. However, the video goes a small way in bringing back some of my interest, mostly because it's not the total wank-fest it was expected to be. Well played, Casablancas. Admittedly, it's a pretty basic film clip; nicely shot in a theatre with a focus on the band. No complaints.

Pnau - The Truth

Pnau finally unveiled the video for 'The Truth' and they didn't disappoint! It's manic, colourful and heavily influenced by the 80s... so everything you should expect from Pnau and then some! Nick Littlemore could lose the 'I'm on drugs' eyes and maybe find a shirt, but those are relatively small issues that really don't have any bearing on, well anything really. Again, the video has me excited about the song all over again and that's what it's meant to do... make you excited!

Architecture in Helsinki - Contact High

Sleek, stylish... and creepy as all hell. Architecture in Helsinki score points for creativity and originality and the video is beautifully shot, but I honestly can't watch the video without cringing a little throughout most of it. I'm sure the gentleman featured in 'Contact High' would appreciate it if you didn't tell anyone about the busy, busy hands that are groping him throughout. Or, you know, the whole making out with ornaments and trees thing.

WINNER - PNAU

'The Truth' brings the fun. And the fun will always win, even if it has druggy eyes and partial nudity. Who do you think had the best video this week?

Song of the Day - Contact High

Architecture in Helsinki - Contact High
Album: Moment Bends (2011)

Architecture In Hesinki delivered a very welcome surprise yesterday in the form of new song, 'Contact High.' It follows on perfectly from 'That Beep,' joining it in the ranks of songs that will bring a smile to your face as soon as you start listening to it. May 8 sees the release of new album, Moment Bends (not Vision Revision as was previously reported), so make sure you mark it in your calendars. It's going to be an album you really need to own.

Top 300 Songs of the 2000s, #250 - 241

So, I've realised that there's more posts than days left in the month for this amazingly amazing 2000s countdown... so on some very special days, you're going to get served with a double helping of hits from the first decade of the new millennium. Today is one of those very special days. I know, I know... you are so excited that you just want to scream, shout, dance and maybe even pee a little. That's kind of weird. My recommendation is to cut out the pee portion of your excited freak out and maybe just go with the scream, shout and dance as you enjoy the next ten songs on the list...

#250 - Here With Me (2001)
by Dido

I didn't hear you leave,
I wonder how am I still here...

It's a shame that Dido's last album, Safe Trip Home, wasn't the massive success it deserved to be. Her songwriting remains leaps and bounds ahead of many of her contemporaries. Those songwriting skills can be found right from the start, including the most excellent 'Here With Me.' And hey, it's the theme for Roswell.

Song of the Day - That Beep

Architecture in Helsinki - That Beep
Album: That Beep EP (2008)

You know who else is well overdue for a new album? Architecture in Helsinki... that's who. They went to the 'twitter-verse' last year to announce they had completed an album going under the name, Vision Revision, but so far no release date has been set. So, um, Architecture in Helsinki... get to it. You can't release a song as good as 'That Beep' and then make us wait three years to hear a follow up!
