Top 116 Songs of 2016, #60 - 51

#60. MACHETE
by Amanda Palmer

You get the drill now don't you?
It's not a will or won't
You can't keep making symbols out of nothing.

When you left, all those years ago, I didn't know what was to come, I didn't know all the the days I'd have to face and I didn't know how I'd see them all without you. Everyday seemed like I called you up yesterday and everyday was 24 hours further away from yesterday. When you left, there was nothing left, there was nothing in front and there was nothing behind and time stopped the stuff, and what was I to do with all the stuff? It's been fifteen years and I hear the piano and the strings and it still seems like yesterday you were alive and it's still as if you never really died. You would have loved Amanda Palmer as much as I do. She lost her best friend so recently, she has so far to go without him and I know how hard some of that so far is going to be. But she writes songs like 'Machete' to make it all a little less lonely and she gets it, like you, my best friend did. You would have loved her as much as I still love you. (Jo Michelmore)

#59. HIGHER
by The Naked and Famous

Tonight we bury this in fire, fire
Under the shape of years, and the weight that brought us here.

There's a lot to love about The Naked and Famous, but I think what I love the most about 'Higher' is that feeling of triumph it gives you. Like you've totally achieved something spectacular, even though you're sitting in front of a computer and dusting some Doritos dust off your pyjamas at four in the afternoon. Released as the lead single for the New Zealand band's third studio album, Simple Forms, 'Higher' is as jubilant and heartwarming as anything that's come before. It's 'Young Blood' on steroids and will, quite literally, have you raising your voice higher and higher. How it didn't crossover to massive commercial success is beyond me. (Matt Bond)

I love this band. Like, I mean, I really love this band. Every time I hear that distinctive vocal of Alisa's, something triggers and a sense of hope and happiness washes over me, every time another beat makes it way out of my headphones something awakens and I want everyone in the world to know I like them. I didn't think I could like them more, but when they added that pop of 80s rock beats and guitar, and those words "tonight we bury this in fire" my little mind was blown. How can something so damn happy be so damn sad be so damn happy? I don't even care. I just love it. (Jo Michelmore)

#58. THE BOYS
by Lisa Mitchell

I think that I'm beginning to care
I think that I'm beginning to care.

'The Boys' is a song that instantly won me over. Right from the very first beats, you can tell that it's a song that you'll fall in love with. Lisa Mitchell creates a euphoric atmosphere that holds up a track with undeniable charms, her performance is tender and full of understanding and it truly feels like she's found her corner of the musical world that is hers and hers alone. This could very well be the most perfectly chilled out pop song of 2016. The recently released (and absolutely stunning) third LP from Mitchell, Warriors, is full of gems like 'The Boys', but I've got just that little bit more love for its carefree nature that leaves you thinking of the happiest of days gone by. (Matt Bond)

#57. DRIVE
by Gretta Ray

Now I'm invested I am captivated and consumed
Seems you're my latest muse.

How could you not fall completely, hopelessly, head over heels in love with this song? Gretta Ray struck gold in every aspect of 'Drive', proving at the start of her career that she's already an expert storyteller and melody maker. Is it any wonder the track took out this year's Vanda and Young songwriting competition? No. No it is not. There's wisdom far beyond Ray's young years on this planet in lines like, "and sure your taste and touch are two things that I want, but babe neither are what I ponder on the most." There's a strong message there when a young artist isn't saying 'love is everything' and it will carry Gretta Ray's career a long way. She's only just finished school and will be heading over to the U.S.A to lay down tracks for a debut album and that's going to be one mighty fine collection of songs if 'Drive' is anything to go by. (Matt Bond)

And here I am, thinking I'm a success if I manage to wash my hair and get to bed before midnight once in a while, when someone like Gretta Ray is writing fabulous indie pop like 'Drive' and winning things like JJJ Unearthed High and the Vanda and Young Songwriting comp, all before she finished high school. Such a beautiful track, infused with feels of country and beats that really do make me wanna get in my car and find a long open road, she deserves all the accolades she's going to get as her talent grows along with her. (Jo Michelmore)

#56. BECAUSE I LOVE YOU
by Montaigne

You say to me as we get home
There's no one like you.

These are always my favourites, the poppy songs that make you want to dance madly, while madly crying little tears because they're so damn true. Everyone has done it, everyone has convinced themselves that something or someone is better than it is because they can't let go, because they want things out of their control, because love. What even is that? Probably an answer too big for these little words of mine, but something I might leave Montaigne to answer with that incredible voice of hers in another punchy kind of pop song in her next album. (Jo Michelmore)

Young love. The kind where someone says horrible things to you and you love them and you try to look good for them and you drive them places and wait in the car and everyone in your life is telling you this person is so wrong for you and you're drinking too much you feel super alone. Wait... no, that's totally fucked and not love at all, but I doubt there's many of us who haven't seen someone they know in a totally messed up relationship and they just can't see it. Or you've been in that relationship yourself and you haven't been able to see it for what it is. Even on Montaigne's 'poppiest' number on the brilliant debut album album Glorious Heights, she distances herself from the pack with a heartbreaking story that is the complete opposite of the boppy nature of the song. Brilliant. (Matt Bond)

#55. MILLION REASONS
by Lady Gaga

I've got a hundred million reasons to walk away
But baby, I just need one good one to stay.

One must assume that some very important people in expensive suits decided that 'Perfect Illusion' would be our introduction to Lady Gaga's fifth studio album, Joanne. It's so out of place with the tracks it sits alongside, songs with beautiful artistry like 'Million Reasons' that strips away all the glitz and glam of the Gaga we've known and loved. Here the focus is on that powerful voice, the expertly performed bare bones instrumentation and the story of a woman looking for just one reason to stay with the man she loves. 'Perfect Illusion' aside (which is still a decent track on its own), Joanne was LGG's most consistent and enjoyable collection yet, showing that there's still a very long career ahead for one of the most talented artists in the world. (Matt Bond)

A few weeks ago, during some random chat, Matt asked me what the last song was that made me cry. We have really uplifting conversations you know. I'm not sure he was expecting the answer I gave. Perhaps it was because it's perfect pop, perhaps it's the way I feel about piano, which always has a way of desperate loneliness. Maybe it's the sense of genuine in her voice which is sometimes lost amongst all of her brightness. Perhaps some songs like this are so popular because they are built for memories and sadness and maybe some of us are still hoping for that one amongst millions. (Jo Michelmore)

#54. HERE COMES KARMA
by E^ST

You think you're righteous
I think that's priceless.

I used to be a believer in karma. I'm not anymore. What I do believe in is a track I can't get out of my head, with so much attitude, if karma is a thing then karma best watch itself because E^ST is coming to deliver her own personal brand of it; hand delivered with a simple beat, some serious attitude, a sound that gets totally stuck in your head and a handclap, straight across your face. Take that karma. (Jo Michelmore)

Does this song not make you feel like you're bulletproof? Like, you could get up to some Bad stuff (with a capital 'B') after you've listened to 'Here Comes Karma' because it makes you feel invincible. E^ST is Australian music's biggest badass and it doesn't even feel like she's trying to be. She just is. I was introduced to the music of E^ST when I saw her supporting Little May on tour earlier in the year. It took approximately fifteen seconds into the first song for me to want to hear everything she had ever made. Pretty much the week after her Get Money! EP was released and I was in looooove. Especially with the track that we've already discussed makes you feel like the baddest M.F. in town. "I said a bad word, I made some hearts hurt." Gets me each and every time, right from the start. It's going to be really exciting to hear what comes next from E^ST. (Matt Bond)

#53. DECAY
by Stevie

So far from home, out on your own
You moved away from me, so independently.

When I wrote about this song earlier in the year, I wrote of all the Stevie's I had to cross paths with before I got to this one. As I googled this time, I came across a guy on Facebook whose username is Stevie Decay. He's pretty dull though. Phoebe Imhoff and Miro Mackie on the other hand were far from dull with their brand of Brisbane electronica, which was simple and elegant with a creepily stark but gorgeous clip, kind of like Brisbane. Or not. The perfect song to listen to in the middle of the night while casually stalking random people on Facebook. Or not. (Jo Michelmore)

#52. DO RITE WITH ME TONITE
by Babaganouj

Oh girl, you make me insane, you make me do things I just can't explain
Well, oh boy, what can I do, you gotta pull through, you gotta pull through now.

Babaganouj have had a HUGE 2016. By the end of the year, one of our favourite Brisbane bands will have released not one, not two, but three EPs, they delivered an ace set at BIGSOUND and they've gone and got themselves all famous in Japan. Because why the heck not, that's an exciting market to break into. 'Do Rite With Me Tonite' was released as a single from Charles, Ruby and Harriette's first 2016 EP, Pillar of Light and it's definitely up there as one of the catchiest tracks they've come up with yet. You get boy/girl singing combos, that delicious Brisbane garage sound and some tenpin bowling in the video. What more do you want? Nothing. That's what. Spoiler alert, this isn't the last you've seen of Babaganouj on this countdown. Sorry about it. Get it? Eh... you will. (Matt Bond)

#51. IT AIN'T ME
by Katy Steele

Let's go straight in from the start
Of this here tragedy.

When you hear 'It Ain't Me' for the first time, you're left wondering why it's taken so long for Katy Steele to get around to releasing some solo tunes. Because this right here is the business. You get to sing along and clap your hands and I already know that you're going to have the biggest smile on your face while you're doing it. It's a break up song, but not a downer. It's the opposite of, 'it's not you, it's me', because it's most definitely not Steele as the title would imply. It's soulful and as fun as it is smart. And it leaves you wondering why it's taken so long for Katy Steele to go down the solo route. At the end of the day though, whether it's solo Katy Steele, Little Birdy or something else, I'm just happy to hear new music from one of my most loved voices. (Matt Bond)

Here's a confession. I was never really a fan of Little Birdy. I don't know why, I can tell you all about their talent, but you know how some bands just don't gel no matter how hard you try? Yeah well I'm not sure what was going on there, because this song, from ex-Little Birdy frontwoman Katy Steele is the biz. Does that mean good? Well, that's what I mean. You know, it's real good. All sass, all smart, all I'm fine on my own plus handclaps, that's exactly what Katy Steele is. Absolutely fine on her own. (Jo Michelmore)

Top 25 - 4 October 2016

Tkay Maidza, Bec Sandridge + Kimbra!

1. Bec Sandridge - High Tide (NEW)

Jo's Pick of the Week: So last Friday morning when I heard the new track from Bec Sandridge I was pretty sure I had my pick for this week's Top 25 sorted, then Friday afternoon Matt sent me the link to Kimbra's little surprise release and I was like "WHA?" because I couldn't believe two incredibly awesome women could release two awesome songs on the same day and then I was torn between which one to write about. We've got a long history of loving Kimbra, with her making numerous appearances on our Woman of the Year and our end of year countdown lists, so I decided to leave Kimbra to Matt (should he choose to write about her, I don't tell him what to do with his life) and write about Ms Sandridge, who's more than likely to make our lists this year - spoiler alert! And beside that, only days ago I was listening to Blondie's 'Tide Is High' so maybe that was a sign I was going to love 'High Tide'. With comparisons to both Blondie and Fleetwood Mac there's pretty much no chance I was going dislike this song, but it's not the comparisons that are important, it's the vocal that demands attention and the rolling, shadowy guitars that hypnotise you into listening again and again. I declared myself a big fan after we saw her play at BIGSOUND, but if she keeps releasing tracks like this there's no doubt that my big fan status will turn into massive fan status very, very quickly. Bec Sandridge plays with Cub Sport on a national tour beginning 21st October in Adelaide, which pretty much sounds like a gig one needs to attend! (Jo Michelmore)

2. Tkay Maidza - Tennies (NEW)

Matt's Pick of the Week: "When I put my tennies on, when I put my tennies on." I can't stop singing it and I don't even really know what it's about. Such is the power of Tkay Maidza. A thorough investigation (Googled it) showed that 'tennies' are tennis shoes. So I'm assuming that when Tkay puts her tennies on, it's the equivalent of Penny Wong taking her glasses off on Q&A. Shit is about to get real and someone is about to get a verbal smackdown. Released as the follow up to 'Carry On' as a preview to the upcoming debut album TKAY, 'Tennies' will have you putting on your finest Dunlop Volleys and ready for one sick night on the town. The badass transference is strong with this song. It will give you attitude like you wouldn't believe. Listening to this song will make you feel like you're walking into a club with a wind machine blowing your glamorous hair out while everyone stares at you with jealousy dripping out of every fiber of their being. In this regard, 'Tennies' is the new 'Pass That Dutch'. Perfect for any dramatic entrance, to get any party started and to make you furiously attempt to memorise the rhymes as fast as you can. #putyourtennies out in support of Tkay Maidza, get this song and get even more excited about the October 28 release of TKAY. (Matt Bond)

The Naked and Famous!

1. The Naked and Famous - Higher

2. James Vincent McMorrow - Rising Water

3. Sarah Belkner - Time (NEW)

Matt's Pick of the Week: "Time is what you make of it, time has let you down." We've loved what Sarah Belkner has been putting out into the music world over the past couple of years. Her vocal work is awesome, she's a wonderful songwriter and the atmosphere created on her tracks can take you out of your world and place you firmly in hers. Last year's Humans EP earned a lot of repeated listens and you should totally check it out when you get a chance. So yeah, big fan of what's come before... but this track right here, 'Time', is just really, really gorgeous and has me thinking that her upcoming debut album is going to be very special. Every element that makes up the song is as perfectly considered and crafted as each shot in the video that accompanies it. Sarah's vocals are as beautiful as ever, with an almost defeated restraint to help the words hit home with the listener. Listen out for a sneaky and welcome Brendan Maclean vocal cameo too, but that's definitely not him starring alongside Belkner in the Brian and Karl directed video. Just in case you thought it was? Anyway, can't wait to hear more from Sarah this year. And next year. And hopefully for many years after that too. (Matt Bond)

4. Grouplove - Welcome To Your Life

5. The Lumineers - Cleopatra

6. Ross Henry - The Deep (NEW)

Jo's Pick of the Week: Until this week, I didn't know who Ross Henry was. I mean, he may not be the first Ross Henry I've known, because I have a vague recollection that one of my favourite primary school teachers was called Mr Henry, but grade five was a long time ago, so pretty sure that Mr Henry isn't this Mr Henry. This Mr Henry, however, could become a different favourite of mine because after hearing the beautifully distant and warm feelings of 'The Deep', I may have found my newest favourite headphones on in the middle of the night sounds. There is something comfortably uneasy about these beats, a feeling of the clutches of insomnia combined with the captivity of sunrise and after reading Ross' words about how this was written; "on a peak between the earliest of mornings and the latest of nights", I'm so impressed with his way of turning feelings into sounds and times into vibrations. The confusing beauty of silhouettes and light in the clip are the perfect accompaniment to a song that has easily and quickly become the highlight of my week. Also, Mr Henry, if you know another Mr Henry who is a teacher, tell him I said hi. (Jo Michelmore)

7. Stonefox - Dreamstate (NEW)

8. Kid Runner - Give Me Something To Love

Top 25 - 10 July, 2016

James Vincent McMorrow!

1. James Vincent McMorrow - Rising Water (NEW)

Matt's Pick of the Week: James Vincent McMorrow falls into the 'better late than never' category of artists with me. Which really just means that while I had heard of the Irish singer over the past couple of years, I hadn't listened to his music... but then I finally did get around to hearing him and was blown away and had to go listen to everything he's ever put out. There's only so much music we can actually listen to in a week, but I'm glad I stumbled upon McMorrow. And it's better late than never, right? Oh and when I say stumbled upon McMorrow, I mean I heard his excellent cover of 'Wicked Game' in the Game of Thrones season six trailer. Which is totally stumbling upon someone. And now we can forget about that long-winded story and talk about McMorrow's new single, 'Rising Water'. The unexpectedly groovy number previews his third LP We Move, which is set for a September 2 release. I don't really know what to say about it, other than it puts a huge smile on my face each time I listen to it and JVM's voice is as close to happy as his haunted tones can sound. There's something about that voice against the groove-infused beat that is really working for me here and I cant' get enough. (Matt Bond)

2. Stevie - Decay

3. Kid Runner - Give Me Something To Love (NEW)

4. Cash Savage and The Last Drinks - Falling, Landing

5. Emily Wurramara - Black Smoke

6. JP Klipspringer - Can't Be (NEW)

Jo's Pick of the Week: While his career is still in its relatively early stages, I really like the stage that JP Klipspringer has reached. It's that sweet era where I've heard enough to know a Klipspringer track when I hear one, but I don't know him well enough to know what's next. 'Bury Me', the first track I heard of his way back in 2014, is one that still takes my breath away when it pops up randomly in my playlist and his EP Din Deafening from last year is one I still like to pop on when I need a slice of calmness in my life. After hearing his latest offering 'Can't Be', I suspect I'll be saying something similar about it in a few years time, with its plain and simply perfect indie pop (with a tinge of country) sensibilities, it is everything I expect from the talent of JPK; not really anything I expected but everything I love about everything I hear of his. His debut album due in September, will no doubt be one of my favourites of the year, so if you read nothing else I write in 2016, just know that album will be in my list of "best ofs" in December. Spoiler alert! (Jo Michelmore)

7. Big Scary - The Opposite of Us

8. Montaigne - Because I Love You

9. REMI - Substance Theory (NEW)

10. Ngaiire - House On A Rock

11. The Naked and Famous - Higher (NEW)

12. Lanks - Bitter Leaf

13. MKO Sun - Boom Pow

14. Old Sault - Sail Home

15. mallrat - For Real (NEW)

16. Bec Sandridge - You're A Fucking Joke

17. E^ST ft. mallrat - Get Money

18. SAFIA - Over You

19. Feuds - River of Wine (NEW)

20. Emma Louise - West End Kids

21. TEES - Got The Feeling

22. Sleeping At Last - Saturn (NEW-ish)

23. Alex Lahey - Let's Go Out

24. Wild Honey - Pull It Together

25. Running Touch - Levitate

The Last 5 Years, #80 - 71

Dear Plastic, Lana Del Rey, Emma Louise + The Paper Kites

Hey... welcome back. What are we doing here? Well, to celebrate our 5th birthday, this April we're looking back at our favourite songs from the past five years! Let's listen to some goodness...

#80. FANCY
by Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX

I be the I-G-G-Y put my name in bold
I been working, I'm up in here with some change to throw.

I know a 13 year old who proudly announced recently; “the clip for ‘Fancy’ is the same as this old movie, I don’t know its name…did you know that?” which made me feel really old. Yes, I knew about Clueless long before I-G-G-Y and Ms XCX made their clip. But then I hear those beats and those words “first things first” smash their way through my headphones and age is irrelevant. And ultimately, when my 13 year old friend sings the words “I’m so fancy” she’s still pretending she is. We already know, I am…from L.A. to Tokyo. (Jo Michelmore)

#79. AWKWARD
by San Cisco

I thought I saw you last night
Get out of my life you've been stalking me for days.

I don't know if it's the 'da-da-da-da' nature of the song or the creepy stalker-y aspects of 'Awkward' that keep it stuck in my head for days each and every time I hear it. And maybe that's a bit concerning. But forget about that for a second, because San Cisco gave us one of the catchiest, boppiest, stalk-iest indie pop gems of the past five years and for that I thank them. Still stuck thinking I'm a stalker? Listen to the track. Now Jordi's the stalker. Ha! Please note, we do not encourage or enjoy stalking. I don't think I've ever talked about stalking this much in my life. The power of San Cisco, ladies and gentlemen. (Matt Bond)

#78. I AM NOT A ROBOT
by Marina and The Diamonds

Don't be so pathetic
Just open up and sing.

Ah, Marina and your diamonds, you make me so happy. There’s nothing better than a piano and cute voice to make me feel alright about the world. Pair it with a sweet little pop tune about vulnerability and a little helplessness and the world is just perfect. The clip with Marina looking a little scared, a little scary and a whole lot of fabulous matches the beats so well, it all takes me back immediately to a little time in my life I lived those words “guess what, I’m not a robot” and loved them. I still do. (Jo Michelmore)

#77. VIDEO GAMES
by Lana Del Rey

Swinging in the backyard
Pull up in your fast car
Whistling my name.

"It's you, it's you, it's all for you, everything I do." Say what you want about Lana Del Rey, but girlfriend delivers one heck of a festival singalong with 'Video Games'. Since I feel the need to remind everyone all the time, remember how I went to Glastonbury last year and it was the best thing ever? Yeah, well I did. And 'Video Games' was a big highlight as thousands of people sang along with a shoeless, smoking Lana Del Rey. Remember when the track first came out in 2011? We didn't know anything about the mysterious LDR. No one had gone snooping into her previous attempt as a music identity. The Saturday Night Live incident was yet to occur. What was that even about, I've forgotten already? All we had was this striking beauty with a haunting/mesmerising voice and an unforgettable debut. It was all retro fantastic and the whole world fell in love. Despite some vocal haters, she's still getting a ton of well deserved love today. (Matt Bond)

#76. YOUNG BLOOD
by The Naked and Famous

You keep my secrets hope to die
Promises, swear them to the sky.

It doesn’t matter where I am when I hear The Naked And Famous, every time I hear their sounds I smile a little smile and have a little dance. Admittedly, if I’m in a shop, sometimes it’s more of a sway than a dance, and if I’m in my car it’s more a head nod than a full dance, but get some TNAF on in my lounge and I’m a dancing machine. These are probably not images you need to think about. Things you need to think about are those amazing synths that kick off ‘Young Blood’ and the beats you can’t help but tap to. I haven’t even mentioned that line which is going to be stuck in your head for a good few hours long after you’re too exhausted to dance anymore, e-yeah-e-yeah-e-yeah. Sorry, couldn’t help myself. You know you love it as much as I do. Yeah-e-yeah-e-yeah. (Jo Michelmore)

#75. JUNGLE
by Emma Louise

And we're moving slow, our hearts beat so fast
I've been dreaming, dreaming about you, about us.

Emma Louise is the owner of some of the best indie pop that has been produced in the last five years. She’s also proud owner of one of the most random and amusing instagram accounts this country has ever produced, but that’s something for you to investigate yourself. While the remix ‘My Head Is A Jungle’ might have been the song that helped her achieve some international fame, the original ‘Jungle’ is where the magic is. The keyboards with an immediate sense of doom at the beginning, the beats rapidly matching the thoughts and Emma-Louise’s thoughts so very familiar; “and I’m complicated….my head is a jungle” because don’t try and pretend you haven’t felt that way at some time or another. Emma Louise is the proud owner of so much talent and definitely one of my favourite artists of the last five years.  (Jo Michelmore)

#74. I DON'T THINK YOU LIKE ME
by Tired Lion

Now you're left here by yourself
Alone and no one else.

Do you want to know what my favourite song of 2015 has been so far? No, it's not Redfoo's 'Juicy Wiggle'. It's Tired Lion's 'I Don't Think You Like Me'. Duh. It's the most effortlessly cool rock track we've heard in what feels like forever and leaves us wondering how this four-piece from Perth remains unsigned. Sophie Hopes kills it throughout, with a performance in the spirit of the likes of Vercua Salt's Nina Gordon and Louise Post. There's definitely a 90s vibe coming through, but it's not a 90s track if that makes any sense. It's 90s, but it's now. It's Tired Lion. We want to hear more. (Matt Bond)

#73. WANT EVERYTHING
by The Verses

And I would write a thousand songs if I thought it would help
Oh but I won't spend another night underneath your spell.

Most artists find it hard to move away from the sound they're most identified with. Ella and Jesse Hooper aren't most artists and seemed to have no problem transitioning from the alternative rocking Killing Heidi to their folk outfit, The Verses. When I first heard 'Want Everything' I couldn't help but compare the sound to Fleetwood Mac. So it was no surprise to see that The Verses had been chosen to tour with the music legends on their Australian tour back in 2009. From start to finish, 'Want Everything' is music perfection that shows off Hooper's strong talents as a storyteller. As much as I'm loving her solo adventures, I would be a huge fan of Ella teaming with her brother once again to see what else they can deliver. You know it would be awesome. And Fleetwood Mac's coming back this year... (Matt Bond)

#72. ST. CLARITY
by The Paper Kites

You'll never be sincerely right
If I stand here with you.

Let me be totally honest with you. I hadn’t listened to this track in a long time. The last time I probably heard it was at the end of 2013, when we placed it in our top 113 songs countdown of that year. It only took a second though, when I hit play and that beautiful banjo started strumming, why oh why had this one slipped from my orbit over the past year and a bit? I don’t know, but now that it’s back I’m not letting it get away again, those layered sounds and the build of emotion is enchanting and so truly delightful. I’m sorry Paper Kites, I let you get away for a little while there, but you’re not going anywhere now, I’ll let your sounds float above my head like that gorgeous bubble in your sweet little clip.  (Jo Michelmore)

#71. EPIC DELAY
by Dear Plastic

Today might be the day
That you might slip away
And I'll be alone
And I'll be alone.

When trying to decide what my favourite lyrics of all time are, I always come back to a song by The Dresden Dolls called 'Boston'. "There is nothing in the world that we can count on, even that we will wake up is an assumption." Jo being the best present giver ever gave me a necklace with them on it, she's awesome like that. Why am I talking about Dresden Dolls/favourite lyrics/great presents when I'm supposed to be talking about Dear Plastic and 'Epic Delay'? Because I think there's something really fascinating about music that talks/asks questions about things that make us uncomfortable. And what makes people more uncomfortable than the fact we're all going to die? That's why I love those Dresden Dolls lyrics. And it's why I love everything about 'Epic Delay'. It's talking about what keeps so many people up at night. What happens when it's all over? What happens to the people that leave us behind? What happens to the people we leave behind? Take that aspect of it away and we're left with the engrossing voice of Scarlette Baccini and mighty fine alternative music. This is a track I've only grown to love more with every listen and it's from an outfit I only want to hear more of, as soon as possible. (Matt Bond)

Text Review - Big Day Out 2014

BIG DAY OUT 2014
Live at Metricon Stadium, Gold Coast (19/01/2014)
Reviewed through the wonders of text messaging
by Jo Michelmore, Matt Bond and Katie Langley

Ah, the Big Day Out; festival of...dust and sun (if you're lucky) and heat and booze and ridiculous costumes and inappropriate clothing and bogan upon bogan and wait, oh that's right, the music. Yet again, Jo braved the crowds and faced the dust, sun, heat, booze, ridiculous costumes, inapproriate clothing, bogans, wait, what's it about again...? Ah yes, the music. So, Matt and Katie, each in their seperate parts of the country, faced sitting down (probably) in air conditioning and (probably) enjoyed a cool beverage or two and waited for the text messages, while Jo faced the music on the Gold Coast. Yep, while the Big Day Out makes it's way around the rest of the country with Sydney, Adelaide and Perth still yet to join in on the fun, we here are celebrating the music festival by giving you another edition of the It's My Kind Of Scene version of the festival review, the only way we know how; via text.
