New Zealand fans are currently enjoying the deliciousness that is Kimbra's debut LP, Vows, sending it all the way to the top of the iTunes charts (where it belongs). Australia has to wait two more days, but that wait will be worth it. You know this is going to be one of the best albums of the year, right? 'Settle Down,' 'Cameo Lover,' 'Good Intent' and the song-stealing moment in 'Somebody That I Used To Know' have shown us that Kimbra is the most exciting breakthrough artist of 2011. A whole album of Kimbra might be too much goodness to handle. For now, just enjoy 'Old Flame,' another showcase for the super-talented Kimbra.

Dear ARIA Awards...



Will there even be a 2011 Awards?



Dear ARIA Awards,

 
 I've been meaning to send this letter since your 2010 awards ceremony, but I just haven't had the time. With the announcement earlier in the month that Channel Ten had passed on televising the 2011 25th Anniversary edition, I thought I should get around to sending this off. Last year's ceremony was a pile of s*it. Everyone knows this. It was a train wreck of an awards show, more akin to a European MTV Awards ceremony than the Australian Grammys it's meant to be. Why would you do a music awards show outside? Did you really think the performances wouldn't sound like crap? Megan Washington was amazing, but everyone else? No. We haven't even touched on how disorganised the evening was, how awkward the presenters were or how Angus and Julia Stone somehow managed to get higher and higher as the evening went on.


 Now, don't get me wrong,  the blame isn't squarely on your shoulders. This goes out to the Australian musicians that treated the ceremony like it was nothing special from the start. You couldn't hire a suit for the evening, Angus Stone? You couldn't learn how to pronounce debut, Jessica Mauboy? You couldn't learn to host, Natalie Bassingthwaghte? So, you've got to do something to make people care about the ARIA Awards again AND you've got to do something to honour the twenty-five events that have preceded this one. Whatever could you do?


 * Get a good host. Seriously, one that can work a crowd and keep the show moving at a quick enough pace. The rumour was that you were looking at Elton John. This works on two levels; he was the host of the very first ARIA Awards ceremony and he's entertaining in a bitchy way. That's always fun.


 * Don't just give awards to the most popular artists. Did Angus and Julia Stone really deserve to win Album of the Year, or were they awarded the prize due to sales? Tame Impala and Sia had much better albums in the running.


 * Move away from Channel Ten, but don't go to pay-TV. That first one isn't really a problem since they, you know, dropped you first. But the second one? Don't go to Foxtel! Channel 7, Channel 9... please step up! This is Australian music's night of nights and the best way to promote homegrown music to a massive audience. Everyone needs to be able to watch it live. You'd better get on this quick, because right now... you're homeless.


* Have some of these artists perform to celebrate quality Australian music in 2011; Gotye and Kimbra, Seeker Lover Keeper, Gurrumul, Boy and Bear, Washington, Emma-Louise, Pnau, The Grates, Regurgitator, Howling Bells, Bag Raiders, Art Vs Science and Architecture in Helsinki


* Have some of these artists perform to celebrate quality (or at least really popular artists with international appeal) Australian music of the past 25 years; The Presets, John Farnham, Kylie Minogue, Missy Higgins, Ben Lee, Kasey Chambers, Midnight Oil, Delta Goodrem AC/DC, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and The Avalanches.


* Have these artists win awards; Gotye and Seeker Lover Keeper.

Frenzal Rhomb's first album in five years, Smoko at the Pet Food Factory, is out now and hit #14 on the ARIA album charts this week. 'Bird Attack' works on so many levels. It has all the trademarks of a typical Frenzal track and it's also educational. What would you do if a bird was attacking? You have no idea. Get an ice-cream bucket and make it into a helmet. You can thank the boys from Frenzal Rhomb for that one.

Oh, Sia... I love you so much, I'll take you anyway I can get you. Even if that means you're teaming up with David Guetta. Nah, Guetta's not that bad. You've got to admit, he's the dominant force in dance music at the moment, scoring collaborations with everyone (and anyone). His new album, Nothing But the Beat, features tracks with Jennifer Hudson, Snoop Dogg, Usher, Nicki Minaj, Timbaland, Jessie J and Sia. J. Hudson and Sia deliver the stand out performances, with 'Titanium' just beating 'Night of Your Life' to claim best song on the album honours. Another season of David Guetta dominance in the club begins. Get excited?

Let's get ready to yeehaw one last time. Today marks the end of our tiny country music countdown as we look at the five bestest songs the genre has given us. For those of you who aren't country fans, hopefully you've gained more of an appreciation for a genre you thought was only suited to redneck hillbillies. For those of you who are country music fans... you'll have figured out I don't really know too much about it a long time ago and stopped reading after I put Lonestar's 'Amazed' in the list. Good for you. Here's the fab five country songs for It's My Kind of Scene.

#5. Ring of Fire (1963)

Johnny Cash + mariachi horns = the perfect game to play a crazy card-based drinking game to. Yeah, so the game ring of fire has little to do with the song, but I do love to play 'Ring of Fire.' The song is one that virtually every person would know and it should be; it's Cash's most successful hit. Written by June Carter (pre-Cash) for her sister Anita, Johnny's version would spend seven weeks at the top of the US Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. There's no crazy, depressing story here, the lyrics are questionable when you think about them and as I mentioned, there's mariachi horns. These things shouldn't work in a country song, but if anyone could do it, it was the man in black.

Best Line: "Love is a burning thing, And it makes a fiery ring."

Yes. YeS. YES!!! Florence + The Machine are back! With Marina and the Diamonds going all out with new music, it was only a matter of time before Ms Welch threw her hat back in the ring. Her second album is due November 7, 2011 and it's just become my most anticipated release of the year. How can she top Lungs? Can she top Lungs? You bet your sweet ass she can. 'What the Water Gave Me' is the official first single for the still unnamed album and it's got all the awesome Florence elements; the most amazing voice in music today, outstanding lyrics, orchestration that defies all pop logic and a whole lot of harp. Welcome back Florence... we've missed you!

Oh my god, she looks just like Shakira! No, No, it's Catherine-Zeta! Actually, her name's Marina. Marina Diamandis is churning out the tunes in the lead up to the release of sophomore album, Electra Heart! First their was the true to form 'Fear and Loathing,' and now comes a track more suited the club scene (and hopefully the charts), 'Radioactive.' Not her best track, but it's a bit of fun and will hopefully earn her some deserved attention and build anticipation for the new album.

We're back with the only country countdown in the world that won't feature Tim McGraw and Garth Brooks. Well, it's highly likely this is the only one. If I could be bothered I'd do some research into it, but... meh. So, here's our last lot of bridesmaids before the top five country songs are revealed later in the week. I feel completely comfortable calling this lot bridesmaids because it's a ladies only edition! What are we waiting for? Nothing. Let's hear some music...

#10. Travelin' Soldier (2002)

One of the saddest stories to be told through song, 'Travelin' Soldier' is absolutely devastating in the hands of Natalie Maines and Co. Like you'd want to listen to it any other way. It's the oldest story in the book... boy meets girl; boy goes to war; boy dies in war; piccolo playing girl cries alone under the football stands. Alright, it's not exactly the classic love story, but at least the girl didn't die too. Romeo + Juliet, I'm looking at you. This is just me making awkward conversation because this song's so good it can bring me to tears. And now you know a little bit more about how pathetic I am. In all seriousness though, this is songwriting at its finest (written by Bruce Robinson) and the Dixie Chicks nail every aspect of their performance.

Best Lines: "Crying all alone under the stands, Was a piccolo player in the marching band, And one name read but nobody really cared, But a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair."

Howdy thurr deputies and welcome back to the country countdown. Yeehaw! Insert random stereotypical cowboy and or redneck line here. Something about a hoedown throwdown perhaps? No? Ok. We're getting straight into the music today and first up... it's Billy Ray Cyrus with 'Achy Breaky Heart.' Nah, I'm totally lying! HA! Jokes on you.

T-Sweezy was bound to make an appearance at some stage and here she is! Don't worry, 'You Belong to Me' and 'Love Story' didn't make the cut. Why? Because there's no pain in those songs and as you should know by now, country music is the music of pain, suffering and love lost. That pretty much sums up 'White Horse.' That, and the Kanye West VMA incident. Think about it. 

Best Lines: "This is a big world, That was a small town, There in my rearview mirror disappearing now."

Is Madonna ready to make the big, exciting comeback we've been waiting for since the massive success of Music in 2000? Sure she's had the odd exciting single since then ('4 Minutes,' 'Hung Up'), but not an album that makes us scream, "LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!" That moment could be coming sooner than we think. If the rumours be true, there's quite the Britney tribute scheduled for the MTV VMA's featuring Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj and the original Material Girl, Madonna! In my mind there are two ways this plays out. 1. Madonna goes postal, crash tackles Gaga and Hulk's out while the other girls attempt to stop her. 2. Madonna shows these princesses how a real Queen rocks a stage. I'd be happy with either option, but two could see the return to fine form (and to the top of the charts) we've all been waiting for. Bring on the Video Music Awards!

First things first... how dare you. Would I ever lie to you? Yes. But that has nothing to do with anything. Secondly, the poor fella only stopped loving her because he died. Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie

You can say it... this is pretty disappointing. There's two major problems I have with the promo for 'The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie.' 1. The completely unoriginal concept. Ripping off U2? You can do a lot better. Rip off someone from Sweden! That's what all the cool kids are doing. But seriously, expectations were high given how unexpectedly awesome the song is and given the band's history for delivering killer clips for their returning singles ('Scar Tissue,' 'By The Way,' 'Dani California'), you can't help but wonder what they were thinking here. 2. Anthony Kiedis' hair. That is all.

I really want to go to Iceland. Why? Because Bon Iver's new video for 'Holocene' is like the best tourism advert ever. Yeah, the song's pretty awesome too. Actually, it's really awesome and possibly the best on Bon Iver. Can it reach #1 on the Top 20? Find out tomorrow!

Say what you want about the song, but the video is Gaga's best this year. Alright, the song's pretty damn good too. I must admit, I was starting to feel a little 'Gaga overload' with the onslaught of singles and constant promotion of Born This Way. 'You And I' is a nice reminder of why I love LGG so much. It's the finest in pop music that showcases one of the best voices and it's accompanied by a beautifully shot video. What's not to like?

Seriously. Listening to Gotye does make you feel better. He must be feeling pretty damn good right now. 'Somebody That I Used To Know' is #1 on the ARIA charts, his new LP is out (and it's incredibly delicious) and that's pretty much a lock to hit #1 on the albums chart too! New track, 'I Feel Better,' gets song of the day because it shows exactly why Gotye would want to work with Kimbra; both capture this amazing 60s sound guaranteed to leave a smile on your face. If I can stop listening to this, I'm going to go listen to 'Cameo Lover' again. Love.

Brisbane is pumping out exciting indie acts this year, with Ball Park Music now joining the likes of Emma-Louise and The Grates. 'It's Nice to Be Alive' is likely to be hyped to the moon and back by JJJ and eventually Nova (in six months time), but that doesn't mean it's not good. It is! Hopefully they have something even better waiting for us on their debut LP, Happiness and Surrounding Suburbs.

Hearing 'A Place Called Home' should also send you into 'wallowing in sadness' mode since the song is synonymous with the death of one of the show's best characters. But enough about TV! Listen and love the beautiful music of Kim Richey.

So, I think 'One of Us' is pretty awesome. I never used to, but I was young(er) and thought it was just some Christian rock lameness that managed to make it onto the pop charts. How wrong I was. It's actually a damn good rock song, the lyrics are some of the most thought provoking you'll ever hear and Osborne's distinct delivery stays with you long after you've heard it. 'One of Us' made and killed her career, but it will go down as one of the better one hit wonders in music's history. Forgotten Gem #5. Enjoy!

You'd think listening to a song so much would make you hate it and usually it would, but 'Winter?' I think I've fallen in love with it all over again. Enjoy!

Breathing Tornados-era Ben Lee was a pretty big deal. With his third album he had the music world talking (and a lot of industry peeps hating him) with incredible songs like 'Cigarettes Will Kill You.' I loved his debut and, to me, it remains one of the best Australian albums. Then there was a 'meh' inducing sophomore LP, I never quite caught his disease with Awake Is the New Sleep and Ripe seemed to pass by with barely anyone noticing. Does anyone even know he released The Rebirth of Venus? Anyway, he may get some attention from new single 'Get Used To It.' My initial reaction is that it's quite good and may grow on me substantially with subsequent listens. But we'll see. For now... it's pretty good, yeah?

Well done, Music Listography. You've got a list that will make everyone feel uncomfortable. Alright, I shouldn't speak for anyone else... it makes me feel extremely uncomfortable. I ain't very good with the whole death thing. Maybe that comes with age? But we're not going to get into chats about my issues with mortality. We're here to pick some songs for my funeral! There are two different scenarios that I could go with, so I'm going to break this into two parts; depressing and happy. If you pick super sad songs, you're gonna make people cry. That's why I'd pick super sad songs. However, if I'm not really bitter before I bite the bullet, maybe I'd go with some upbeat numbers. But do I pick songs that really meant something to me? Or do I pick a song like 'Bad Romance' and pay to have people force anyone attending to dance? So many choices. Here's what I've come up with...

Evanescence fans, your fears can be laid to rest. Amy Lee said she wouldn't disappoint long-time fans with the band's new direction and I've got to say... she's right. When reports came out that they were heading in a more electronic direction, many a fan had some reservations. There was also the possibility that Evanescence could go in a more 'poppy' direction, resulting in Amy Lee going all Avril Lavigne 'Girlfriend.' Ok, no there wasn't, but imagine it! 'What You Want,' the first single from Evanescence's third, self-titled album, finds the band with their heaviest sound. Blazing guitars, banging drums and Lee's booming vocals. What's not to like? Will it be the commercial success that was 'Bring Me To Life?' No. Is it still a great song? Yes.

Kimbra must be on a high right now. Her career has gone from strength to strength in the past couple of months; signed to a major record label, the overwhelming positive reception to 'Cameo Lover' and top 5 success collaborating with Gotye for 'Somebody That I Used To Know.' Third single 'Good Intent' sees the winning streak continue and gosh... is this a good song or what? The vocals, the jazzy vibe, the Kimbrocity of it all. It's so good you'll be making up words for it. For those keeping score at home, Kimbra's three for three right now. If she can keep up the stellar work, Vows can already be considered a strong contender for album of the year.
