Song of the Day - Time To Wander

Gypsy and The Cat - Time To Wander
Album: Gilgamesh (2010)

The final act in our 'Australian only' month has had a pretty good week. Placing three songs in the Hottest 100 is a huge achievement for any group on the back of their debut album and Gypsy and The Cat pulled it off. The Melbourne duo's amazing single, 'Time To Wander,' came in at #74 on JJJ's countdown and regular readers may remember it finishing at #65 on It's My Kind of Scene's Top 100 Songs of 2010. I'm sure they feel a whole lot better about the Hottest 100 placing. Or do they?

This of course brings our look at the 31 most interesting acts in Australian music to a close. If it was done in list form, it would look a little something like this;

Bernard Fanning, Sarah Blasko, The Temper Trap, Lisa Mitchell, Bag Raiders, Little Birdy, Little Red, Sia, The Verses, Megan Washington, Angus and Julia Stone, Silverchair, Kylie Minogue, The Presets, Cut Copy, Pnau, Empire of the Sun, Missy Higgins, Architecture in Helsinki, The Waifs, The Grates, Josh Pyke, Nick Cave, Tame Impala, Art vs Science, Howling Bells, Miami Horror, Midnight Juggernauts, Bertie Blackman, Operator Please and Gypsy and The Cat.

So, who missed out?

Top 20 - 30 January, 2011

Zowie... she's a biter.

1. Zowie - Bite Back

2. Lykke Li - I Follow Rivers

3. Eminem - Space Bound

4. Bag Raiders - Sunlight

5. The Verses - Teeth (NEW)

Song of the Day - Lighthouse

The Waifs - Lighthouse
Album: Up All Night (2003)

It seems we could finally be hearing some new music from The Waifs very soon, with an announcement in Australian Rolling Stone that the group is gearing up to release a follow up to Sun, Dirt, Water. This is exciting news. Highly exciting. With the group slowly gaining much deserved attention from the Americas, their next album could be the most successful yet for Australia's leading folk act. This is more exciting news. Highly exciting. Now's the time to dust off your old Waifs recordings and get ready for the awesomeness that's to come!

Song of the Day - Cupid Boy

Kylie Minogue - Cupid Boy
Album: Aphrodite (2010)

Indie, disco or dance, Kylie remains one of the most interesting Australian acts in music. Her title as the Princess of Pop is all but secure at this moment in time, as is her status as one of the country's only true superstars. Her last release, Aphrodite, saw a renewed interest from American audiences, something she hasn't been able to achieve since the monster success of 'Can't Get You Out of My Head.' While some of her single choices were questionable ('Better Than Today'), she could make up for it by choosing 'Cupid Boy' as the album's fourth release. It's got 'hit song' written all over it. Enjoy!

Friday 28 January 2011

Song of the Day - That Beep

Architecture in Helsinki - That Beep
Album: That Beep EP (2008)

You know who else is well overdue for a new album? Architecture in Helsinki... that's who. They went to the 'twitter-verse' last year to announce they had completed an album going under the name, Vision Revision, but so far no release date has been set. So, um, Architecture in Helsinki... get to it. You can't release a song as good as 'That Beep' and then make us wait three years to hear a follow up!

Thursday 27 January 2011

Song of the Day - Teeth

The Verses - Teeth
Album: Seasons (2010)

If you're a regular reader, you'll be well aware of my not-so-secret love for Ella and Jesse Hooper's post-Killing Heidi project, The Verses. Their official debut single, 'Want Everything,' placed at #19 on It's My Kind of Scene's Top 100 Songs of 2010 countdown and their excellent first LP, Seasons, was one of the best (and most criminally underappreciated) Australian releases of the year. If they get the chance to release a third single, here's hoping it's 'Teeth.' It's got that indie touch that JJJ would likely embrace, but it's also packing a ton of crossover potential too. Anyway, sorry about the True Blood video... it was the only video with a studio version of the song I could find. It's not like it doesn't work though, right? Whatever... just enjoy the song!

Song of the Day - Low Happening

Howling Bells - Low Happening
Album: Howling Bells (2006)

Happy Australia Day boys and girls! The funnest day of the year has arrived... sun, BBQs, the JJJ Hottest 100 and copious amounts of cheap, cheap beer and wine always make it a day to remember. In other exciting news, word is that the Howling Bells have completed recording their third album and we can expect to hear a little something something (hopefully) very soon. This is a good thing because Juanita Stein = awesome.

Anyway... Australian or not, have a fantastic day today... if you're not in Australia head over to www.abc.net.au/jjj and stream the Hottest 100. It kicks off at midday EDT (that's 11am for us Queenslanders). Enjoy!

Song of the Day - Byrds of Prey

Bertie Blackman - Byrds of Prey
Album: Secrets and Lies (2009)

Bertie Blackman came to national attention in 2009, arriving with a bang with the critically acclaimed album Secrets and Lies, earning her an ARIA Award for Breakthrough Independent Artist of the Year. While there's been no official confirmation for when we'll hear a second album, it's only a matter of time and most likely a case of sooner than later. We can hope. For now we have the fantastic song, 'Byrds of Prey.' Enjoy!

Monday 24 January 2011

Song of the Day - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!
Album: Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! (2008)

Regardless of his status as the front for the Bad Seeds or current act, Grinderman, Nick Cave will always be one of the most interesting Australian men in music. Scratch that, one of the most interesting men in music, period. Anyone attending the Big Day Out festival this week should make Grinderman a must-see act. You know that Cave and co. would be putting on an amazing show. And you wouldn't want to bet against Grinderman stealing a spot or two on the Hottest 100, which is only two days away from being revealed! Anyway, for now we're going to take a couple of steps back in his career to the late Bad Seeds era to enjoy some sweet 'Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!'

This Chart Attack

Some new girl on the scene...

So it's been a long, long time since I did a post on the American, UK and Australian music charts. Last time, we looked at the top 10 songs in those three countries as well as Denmark. This time, we're going to be throwing New Zealand into the mix. With all the amazing music coming out of New Zealand lately (Zowie, The Naked and Famous, Kimbra etc.) you'd think that the Kiwi's would have the best chart out of the four. So let's start with them and find out...

 NEW ZEALAND

1. Britney Spears - Hold It Against Me (NEW)

2. Six60 - Rise Up 2.0

3. Chris Brown - Yeah 3x

4. Enrique Iglesias ft. Ludacris - Tonight (I'm Loving You) (NEW)

5. Martin Solveig ft. Dragonette - Hello

6. Bruno Mars - Grenade

7. Far East Movement ft. Ryan Tedder - Rocketeer

8. David Guetta ft. Rihanna - Who's That Chick

9. Tinie Tempah ft. Kelly Rowland - Invincible

10. Katy Perry - Firework

Song of the Day - The Hardest Part

Washington - The Hardest Part
Album: I Believe You, Liar (2010)

January is quickly coming to an end, as is our look at one of the most interesting Australian artists for each day of the month. It's also only days until the JJJ Hottest 100 in revealed and you have to assume that we're going to see a lot of the delightful Megan Washington. The ARIA Award winning singer/songwriter had a stellar 2010 with the release of I Believe You, Liar, joining the ranks of Sarah Blasko and Missy Higgins as one of Australia's leading female performers. I'm sure many would agree when I say the sooner she returns to the studio, the better.

19. Wavves - Mutant (NEW)

20. M.I.A - Gen N.E.Y

Song of the Day - Volcanic

Operator Please - Volcanic
Album: Gloves (2010)

Gold Coast indie-pop stars, Operator Please, delivered above and beyond the expectations for their second full-length album, Gloves. Unfortunately the album didn't get the attention it really deserved, nor did the four amazing songs released; 'Logic,' 'Back and Forth,' 'Like Magic' and 'Volcanic.' Luckily for you, you get to enjoy 'Volcanic' as your Song of the Day.

Friday 21 January 2011

Song of the Day - Parlez Vous Francais?

Art vs. Science - Parlez Vous Francais
Album: Art vs Science EP (2009)

I don't know if it's the song or the video for 'Parlez Vous Francais' that's made me an Art vs. Science fan for life. Alright, it's the song, but how awesome is the video?! Best. Mime. Fight. Ever. The group will finally release their debut studio album, The Experiment, late February 2011. If you're not already, you may now get excited. Art vs. Science... one of Australia's most interesting acts in music today.

Thursday 20 January 2011

Song of the Day - I Look To You

Miami Horror - I Look To You
Album: Illumination (2010)

We've come to the last Australian electronic act to feature this month, Miami Horror. They've been releasing awesome track after awesome track since 2008, but I think 'I Look To You.' featuring New Zealand siren Kimbra, could be their best song yet. Not only does it make you love Miami Horror more, it makes you anticipate the arrival of Kimbra's debut album which is due this year!

Wednesday 19 January 2011

Song of the Day - Tombstone

Midnight Juggernauts - Tombstone
Album: Dystopia (2007)

We've been sticking with great Australian electronic and dance music for the past couple of days, so instead of bucking the trend, here's the incredible Melbourne three-piece, Midnight Juggernauts! They're continuously gaining more and more recognition on the back of their sophomore release, The Crystal Axis, and they've been touring extensively to promote the album. I probably should have gone with one of the songs off that album, but 'Tombstone' is 'Tombstone.' It's ace. Just ace. Enjoy!

Tuesday 18 January 2011

Collaborations I Want To See

Everyone loves seeing two of their favourite music stars combining their powers (Captain Planet style) to unleash a monster hit on the masses. We've seen some huge collaborations throughout music's history; David Bowie and Mick Jagger had us dancing in the streets... The Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin proved that sisters could do it for themselves... Britney and Madonna made out. Those were good times.

Good times...

Over the last couple of years we've seen Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, Eminem and Rihanna and Beyonce and Lady Gaga release massive hits. We've also seen Jessica Mauboy team-up with Ludacris and Ke$ha skank it up with Taio Cruz, but the less said about those the better. You're probably looking for some sort of point to all this, so let's get to it. Here are the top five collaborations that I want to see... and soon!

Song of the Day - Take Me Over

Cut Copy - Take Me Over
Album: Zonoscope (2011)

Bag Raiders, The Presets, Pnau, Empire of the Sun and now... Cut Copy! If you thought Australia didn't have much to offer in the electronic music department, you were wrong... so there. Disregarding my immature arguments, Cut Copy have been one of the best acts to come out of Australia for some time now and it looks like their stock can only be increased with the release of third album, Zonoscope, next month. The first official single is 'Take Me Over,' conveniently chosen for you as your Song of the Day here on It's My Kind of Scene. So, what say you people; are you fans of the Cut Copy? Are you a big enough fan to iTunes the album when it's released?

Monday 17 January 2011

Song of the Day - The Truth (Sam La More Remix)

Pnau - The Truth (Sam La More Remix)
Album: Soft Universe (2011)

While there are only full length remixes of 'The Truth' released at this stage, if they're anything to go off 2011 could be a massive year for Pnau. If this doesn't get you excited for the release of Soft Universe, I don't know what will. Sam La More's remix is ace, rad, amazing... it's just that good. Australian electronic and dance music is off to an incredible start to 2011, with Pnau and Bag Raiders leading the way. It's going to make the race for Best Dance Release at this year's ARIA Awards very interesting.

Sunday 16 January 2011

Song of the Day - Talk Like That

The Presets - Talk Like That
Album: Apocalypso (2008)

How could you look at the best artists in Australian music today and not look at The Presets? That would just be crazy talk (talk, talk, talk). Thankfully I'm not completely crazy, so yeah... here's The Presets. Enjoy? I've said it many times over the past year and I'll say it again; it's about time we heard some new Presets music. Since they're touring with the Future Music Festival in March, there's no better time than now to drop something new (and hopefully incredible) to get everyone pumped up for that.

Saturday 15 January 2011

Top 20 - 15 January, 2011

Can Lenka conquer the world with her new track?

1. The Naked and Famous - Young Blood

2. Stevie Nicks - Secret Love (NEW)

3. Kanye West - Hell of a Life (NEW)

4. Walter Meego - Starlight

5. Bag Raiders - Sunlight

Song of the Day - Lines on Palms

Josh Pyke - Lines on Palms
Album: Memories and Dust (2007)

Josh Pyke seems to be well overdue for releasing new solo material. Yeah, he had that Basement Birds group going for him in 2010, but hopefully in 2011 we see him shift his focus back in the direction of his incredible solo work.

We're in the middle of January now and we've seen some awesome music from these amazing Australian artists; Bernard Fanning, Sarah Blasko, The Temper Trap, Lisa Mitchell, Bag Raiders, Little Red, Sia, Little Birdy, Angus and Julia Stone, Empire of the Sun, Missy Higgins, Tame Impala, The Grates, Silverchair and now Josh Pyke. With 16 more still to come, who do you think should make it as one of the most interesting acts in Australian music today?

Friday 14 January 2011

Song of the Day - The Greatest View

Silverchair - The Greatest View
Album: Diorama (2002)

Silverchair. No matter what they do they'll always be considered one of the most interesting Australian acts. With a new album expected to drop in 2011 it looks like we're going to be seeing the band move even further away from their post-grunge roots. Not that that's a bad thing, but Daniel Johns is talking less guitar, more synths for the new album.... Silverchair goes Gaga? Don't count on it. Anyway, while I wasn't the biggest fan of 'Straight Lines' or pretty much all of Young Modern for that matter, I still can't help getting excited about a new Silverchair album. Here's hoping it's a little more Neon Ballroom than The Fame.

Thursday 13 January 2011

Song of the Day - We Are The People

Looking... good?

Empire of the Sun - We Are The People
Album: Walking On A Dream (2008)

There's some doubt about the future of Empire of the Sun, with Nick Littlemore seemingly walking away from the electro duo to focus on Pnau. I wouldn't worry too much though... as if Luke Steele's going to give up the major success that the band's become. He's already proved he can go it alone if need be with live performances, so I'd say we can expect to hear some new Empire of the Sun sooner rather than later. Are you a fan of the group?

And don't forget about the people of Queensland. If you would like to donate to the flood relief appeal you can do so at http://www.qld.gov.au/floods/donate.html.

Wednesday 12 January 2011

Song of the Day - Soon We'll Be Found

Sia - Soon We'll Be Found
Album: Some People Have Real Problems (2008)

Sia is kind of amazing and one of the best artists to come out of Australia since the 2000s began. She's so good, she took out the Australian Artist of the Year in the 2010 Scene Awards. While it's nice to highlight how awesome Sia is, I chose 'Soon We'll Be Found' for another reason. There are currently many people missing in Queensland as the state is devastated by terrible floods. We don't need to hear about any more deaths, so I truly do hope that these missing people are found safe and sound very soon.

Just remember, if you have any spare change to donate to those most affected by the floods, you can do so at http://www.qld.gov.au/floods/donate.html.

Tuesday 11 January 2011

Ain't No Sunshine

Almost two-thirds of the state of Queensland in Australia has been declared a disaster zone, with the worst floods we've seen since 1974 devastating the sunshine state. But most of my readers would already know that, because they're living through it right now. My thoughts go out to all of you, your friends and your families. Readers not from Australia, send some good energy, best wishes, your prayers... whatever it is you're down with... in the direction of people who really need it right now. If you're feeling extra generous, you can donate some $$$ to help out those most affected at http://www.qld.gov.au/floods/donate.html.

Song of the Day - Silver Coin

Doing their best Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros impression...

Angus and Julia Stone - Silver Coin
Album: A Book Like This (2007)

How could I do 'Australian Only' this month for each Song of the Day and NOT feature Angus and Julia Stone? I've posted a lot of their more recent stuff over the past year, so I've gone with an old favourite, 'Silver Coin,' as today's pick. The duo's stock has never been higher as they're hot off the heels of their big ARIA Awards night... will 2011 be just as kind to this brother/sister combo? Julia's solo album is supposedly ready to go, and Angus has confirmed that they've begun writing tracks for their next album so I don't see why not. Anyway, enjoy the album and live versions of 'Silver Coin!'

Monday 10 January 2011

I Think I'll Hold It Against Her...

Britney Spears - Hold It Against Me

Well, the time for demos is over. Here's the real deal, bona fide, former pop-princess, now turned Queen of Pop (her words, not mine). It's certainly better than the demo that we heard earlier in the week, better by leaps and bounds, but still... is this really the comeback single we wanted to hear from Britney? She did a lot to rebuild her reputation with the singles released from Circus, with 'Womanizer,' 'Circus' and 'If U Seek Amy' bringing her chart success. '3' on the other hand was pretty average but still went to #1 in the US. Do you think 'Hold It Against Me' will get her to the top again?

Rating: 2/5

P.S. thanks Jonny Metro for posting the link for this on the faceybook. I was pretty slack to post anything else today and then BAM! New Britney in my face. The music that is. Perverts.

Song of the Day - Burn Bridges

The Grates - Burn Bridges
Album: Teeth Lost, Hearts Won (2008)

The Grates are one of my favourite bands to see live, mostly due to the crazy antics and infectious enthusiasm of lead singer, Patience Hodgson. Since they're reportedly heading back into the studio to record their third album with hopes of a 2011 release, you'll soon get a chance to see just how good they are live for yourself (if you, uh, haven't already)! With Powderfinger out of the game, will this crazy three-piece step up to become Brisbane's number one band?

Sunday 9 January 2011

Report Card: M.I.A

Galang, galang, galang!!!

It's been almost two months since the last Report Card, which featured every single that Powderfinger released throughout their illustrious career. That took forever to do up, so I'm going to simplify things a little. The only songs that I'll feature now must be accompanied by a music video, which makes sense really since I'm meant to be judging song AND video quality. So, who's up in this edition? M.I.A! Not only is she fresh off dropping her new Vicki Leekx mixtape, but she'll soon be in Australia in preparation for this year's Big Day Out festival! You can download the full (and free!) Vicki Leekx mixtape for yourself at http://vickileekx.com/. It's well worth it. Now, let's get to the music!

Galang

Song: A+
Video: B

Fantastic debut song, but the video isn't exactly groundbreaking. Still, the song is one of the best of the 2000s and remains my favourite M.I.A track.

Song of the Day - Where I Stood

Missy Higgins - Where I Stood
Album: On A Clear Night (2007)

MIGGINS!!! Where for art thou, Missy? I know you've been busy acting and gaining attention in the US music scene, but it would be awesome if there was news about you heading into the studio to record the release to the long awaited follow up to On A Clear Night. Hopefully we get that good news in 2011. Until then, we can listen to all the quality music from one of Australia's finest female artists. Enjoy!

Top 20 - 8 January, 2011

She's a prostitute and you gon' get some... her words, not mine.

1. Lykke Li - I Follow Rivers (NEW)

Lykke Li - I Follow Rivers by dynmk

2. The Naked and Famous - Young Blood

3. Clare Maguire - Ain't Nobody

4. Eliza Doolittle - Rollerblades

5. Walter Meego - Starlight (NEW)

Starlight by waltermeego

Song of the Day - Lucidity

Tame Impala - Lucidity
Album: Innerspeaker (2010)

I'm running late for work, but must post a song of the day! Continuing with our 'Australian Only' theme it's Tame Impala, another fantastic Aussie band from the West Coast who have been gaining a ton of recognition at home and overseas. The band took out the J Award for Album of the Year in 2010 and are rumoured to be ready to release another album this year to build off all of their recent success. Will 2011 be the year of Tame Impala?

Help!

Help get me on Channel [V]!

Just a quick reminder that I'm entered into Channel [V]'s B430 blogger search and I need your votes!! Many thanks to those that have already taken the time to vote for me, I really appreciate it. Now I'm going to plagiarise (from myself, for the second time) and post my original and amazingly helpful instructions on how to vote for me...

I've never been that good at pimping myself out... but I'm going to attempt a little somethin' somethin' right here, right now. If you're a fan of my "work" here, I could use a small favour. Channel [V] Australia is looking for bloggers for their B430 program and I want to be one of them! So, how can you help me out? By voting for me! There are a couple of things you'll need in advance; 1. a facebook account and 2. access to a valid Australian telephone number and address. If you're outside Australia, coming up with these should be a fun experience (but I'd really appreciate your time and effort).

You'll need to go to Channel [V] Australia's facebook page which is, http://www.facebook.com/#!/vmusic.com.au  Once you've liked it, you need to go into the B430 section which is up the top next to where it says Wall, Info, Photos and all that jazz. You then need to add the Channel [V] Global Animal application. Once you've added it, head down to 'Vote For My Friends' and you can find me in search under Matthew (not Matt!). I'm the sexy beast sitting on the tiger giving the smirkiest of smirks. Then you can vote for me and I will love you forever. You know what, I'll add the picture above, so you know EXACTLY which one it is (enjoy!).

You can help out even more by getting your friends (and family, co-workers, acquaintances, strangers you encounter on the street etc.) to vote for me too! Sorry for the hassle, but this is something that I would really, really like to do and it would help turn the labour of love that is It's My Kind of Scene into something a bit more meaningful. Thanks for reading and more importantly, thanks for voting!

Try Not To Hold It Against Her...

When I grow up, I wanna be Ke$ha!

Producers, Max Martin and Dr Luke, have dropped the demo for new Britney Spears track, 'Hold It Against Me.' Don't worry, Brit's vocals haven't dropped a couple of octaves, it's not even her singing. Perhaps someone should tell her not to bother laying down her vocals at all, for the track seems like it would be more suited to someone like Ke$ha. Not even someone like Ke$ha. Just Ke$ha. 'Hold It Against Me' is essentially 'Take It Off' part 2. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh. Afterall, the track hasn't been mastered yet and Britney hasn't brought her, um, magic (?) to it yet... so let's wait and see.

What's your initial reaction to the demo? Yay or nay?

Song of the Day - Summarize

Little Birdy - Summarize
Album: Confetti (2009)

Another day, another great Australian act for your Song of the Day, as we move from Little Red to Little Birdy. The band's gone on a hiatus after the release of third and criminally underappreciated album, Confetti, to pursue other interests, but hopefully they'll be back better than ever before you know it. Maybe Katy just wanted to do some collaborating with big brother Luke and Empire of the Sun? Maybe not.

Thursday 6 January 2011

Song of the Day - Rock It

Little Red - Rock It
Album: Midnight Remember (2010)

We've gone 'Australian Only' for Song of the Day this month and next up, it's Little Red! The band's sure to earn a place or two on this year's JJJ Hottest 100, with 'Rock It' being one song I can guarantee we'll hear at some stage as the countdown is unveiled on Australia Day. I'll admit, it took some time for the song to win me over, but it did and now I can't stop listening to it. You can expect big things from these kids over the next couple of years!

With A Little Help From My Friends

Matt Bond aka Dances With Tigers...

Just a quick reminder that I'm entered into Channel [V]'s B430 blogger search and I need your votes!! Many thanks to those that have already taken the time to vote for me, I really appreciate it. Now I'm going to plagiarise (from myself) and post my original and amazingly helpful instructions on how to vote for me...

You'll need to go to Channel [V] Australia's facebook page which is, http://www.facebook.com/#!/vmusic.com.au . Once you've liked it, you need to go into the B430 section which is up the top next to where it says Wall, Info, Photos and all that jazz.
