Report Card: M.I.A

Galang, galang, galang!!!

It's been almost two months since the last Report Card, which featured every single that Powderfinger released throughout their illustrious career. That took forever to do up, so I'm going to simplify things a little. The only songs that I'll feature now must be accompanied by a music video, which makes sense really since I'm meant to be judging song AND video quality. So, who's up in this edition? M.I.A! Not only is she fresh off dropping her new Vicki Leekx mixtape, but she'll soon be in Australia in preparation for this year's Big Day Out festival! You can download the full (and free!) Vicki Leekx mixtape for yourself at http://vickileekx.com/. It's well worth it. Now, let's get to the music!

Galang

Song: A+
Video: B

Fantastic debut song, but the video isn't exactly groundbreaking. Still, the song is one of the best of the 2000s and remains my favourite M.I.A track.

Sunshowers

Song: B-
Video: A-

She's riding an elephant in the video... that's an automatic A. As for song itself, I've never really gotten into Sunshowers. Some people LOVE it. I just found it pretty average compared to the other songs on Arular.

Bucky Done Gun

Song: A
Video: B

Bird Flu

I appreciate how much effort went into the video, I really do. But the song... meh.

Song: C+
Video: B+

Boyz

Song: A+
Video: A

She looks great, the video is fantastic, the song is amazing. This is kind of the beginning of the, "M.I.A can do no wrong," phase of my life.

Jimmy

Song: B+
Video: A

Bollywood + Disco = awesome? When M.I.A does it, it is.

Paper Planes

Song: A+
Video: B

Her most commercially successful song to date and with good reason. Song > Video.

Born Free

Song: A
Video: A-

What can I say, I love me some mini-movie music videos. The choice to kill off gingers is questionable, but makes for an interesting 9 minutes.

XXXO

Song: A+
Video: A-

'XXXO' would place at #2 on our Top 100 Songs of 2010, so that makes the A+ a pretty easy grade to award it. She looks better than ever in the video too, so bonus points for that.

Overall Grade: A-

M.I.A has been pushing boundaries and outdoing herself since she arrived on the scene. If you're a regular reader, you'll understand my love, but what about you? Do you have love for M.I.A?
