2000 - 2004. Aka, my high school years. Not so long ago, but enough to make me go... it's about time you made something of your life, isn't it? Isn't it?! But that daily struggle is another story. I was actually thinking about high school last night. Unfortunately it was a lot of thinking because I can't seem to remember a whole lot of it. Of course, some funny moments are still there, but the learning stuff? That gone now. That far away or something. As for the music, it was an interesting time for the industry. The reign of bubblegum pop was ending and rap was becoming the new dominant genre. Britney Spears was sane, kids were feeling all emo and Lady Gaga... was still in high school too. Yep, I've accomplished nothing. Here's some music from my high school years!

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls... all four of you out there in cyberspace reading this blog, it's the post you've been waiting your life (three weeks) for; the top 10 songs of the 2000s. Over the last twenty-nine posts we heard 290 songs that made us laugh, made us cry, or made us do neither of those two things but maybe do some other stuff instead. Music's biggest stars came out to play, (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rihanna, Britney Spears, OutKast) as did some critical favourites (Cat Power, Damien Rice, Bat For Lashes, Antony and the Johnsons). But now we're ready to say hello to the ten best songs of a decade chock full of good ones. Of course I'm ready, I already know what they are! The question is, are you ready? You'd better be, because here we go...

Rolling Stone had it at #3. Pitchfork placed in one spot back at #4. NME went all out and declared it the #1 song of the 2000s. You can understand how 'Crazy In Love' charts within the top 10 of virtually every end of decade countdown out there. It really is that good. Beyonce showed in the delivery of one spectacular song, one of what would become many, that she was the Diana Ross of Destiny's Child... someone that wouldn't be stopped from achieving solo success by anyone or anything. Somehow she's managed to deliver time and time again, becoming one of the highest selling and most respected female artists of the 21st century. But nothing tops her debut. 'Crazy In Love' is a party song, an empowering anthem, one of the greatest love songs in pop form and really, it's one of the greatest songs of the 2000s. However, it's not the greatest song of the 2000s.

Welcome to the penultimate edition of the biggest countdown It's My Kind of Scene has put together! That's right, the end is nigh for the Top 300 Songs of the 2000s. Today we meet the bridesmaids, ten songs that narrowly missed out on making the top 10. The brides, aka the top 10, we'll see those tomorrow. But first, the bridesmaids. Everyone likes the bridesmaids because generally they're single and ready to mingle... what? We're getting waaay off topic now, so let's hear some music!

A song that brought a crazy woman back into the spotlight (in a big way), three of the biggest alternative rock acts (only two are still making music together) and arguably the biggest band in the world today (not by me though). I'm sure you've heard the sad news by now... The White Stripes have disbanded. One of the greatest bands the 2000s has offered, gone. Melodramatic? Yes. But they really were quite the good. Is this really the last we'll see of Jack and Meg White? Not likely, since Jack is in a million other quality bands and Meg will find something to do (hopefully not involving singing). Anyway, I look forward to the reunion tour in 2024.

I'll start this one off by letting you know Meg is here as drumming superstar Meg White, not vocalist Meg White. With that out of the way, let's begin. The White Stripes have earned critical acclaim and become one of the most successful alternative bands in the world since they rose to prominence with the release of White Blood Cells in 2001. Much of their success is credited to Jack White's signature vocals, songwriting talents and the amazing things he can do with a guitar. While it is undeniable that Jack White is as true a rock star as there has ever been, you can't forget about Meg and what she contributes to making The White Stripes work.

She creates an essential balance within the group with her sometimes reserved and somewhat limited methods of drumming. There's generally a lot going on in a typical White Stripes song, with Jack's often frantic delivery on vocals and epic guitar riffs. Meg keeps everything together on the drums, exactly what a good drummer is supposed to do. This doesn't mean that she won't let loose at times and when she does it's pretty amazing.

Presence, personality and style all contribute to making Meg a fascinating woman of rock. She always seems so cool, almost aloof to whatever is going on around her. In interviews she'll keep quiet, seemingly too shy to talk about herself but she'll give little bits of information away every now and then, maintaining a feeling of mystery. After keeping quiet for some time, The White Stripes released Under Great White Northern Lights, a documentary following the band on a tour of Canada which has since had a live album released under the same name.
