#50 - Turn Me On
The Grates
Wrap yourself around me, do it just define me,
do it to ignite me, do it as a friend.
The Grates may not have made the impact they deserved to in 2011 with third album, Secret Rituals, but as far as I'm concerned, I would follow Patience Hodgson and John Patterson to the end of the world (and back again) if I had a chance at watching them do their thing. Their thing? Being awesome. 'Turn Me On' showed that the duo could still deliver delicious indie pop, even without former drumster, Alana Skyring.
#49 - Blue Jeans
by Lana Del Rey
You were sorta punk rock,
I grew up on hip-hop.
What did we learn? That Lana Del Rey will, "love you more than those b*tches before!" One of my favourite lyrics of the year and one of the best love songs of the year from our favourite new indie darling.
#48 - Light All My Lights
by Seeker Lover Keeper
I long for a spark, for a light...
Alone they are mighty, together... invincible. I think that's a tag-line for the X-Men or something, but it works just as well when discussing Seeker Lover Keeper. Sarah Blasko, Holly Throsby and Sally Seltmann (who we discussed earlier as being a witch because she creates musical magic) knocked our socks off with their debut self-titled album. 'Light All My Lights' saw S. Blasko take the lead and have me waiting with baited breath for her next LP. Either that or more Seeker Lover Keeper in 2012 and I'll be a happy man.
#47 - St. Peter's Gate
by Matt Walters
Leave right now it's not too late,
Meet you at St. Peter's gate...
ATTENTION ALL READERS: If you're feeling 'St. Peter's Gate,' do yourselves a favour and iTunes Matt Walters' debut, Farewell Youth. It truly stands as the best release from an Australian male artist in 2011 not named Gotye.
#46 - Awkward
by San Cisco
I thought I saw you last night,
Get out of my life you've been stalking me for days.
Seriously, Australian music was just the best in 2011. You've got three examples above, one below and the funnest song you'll ever hear about stalking, 'Awkward,' by one of the best new acts of the year, San Cisco. Here's to a high placing on the 2012 Triple J Hottest 100!
#45 - The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie
by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Rain dance Maggie advances to the final,
Who knew that she had the goods?
2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees include Red Hot Chili Peppers and Guns 'N' Roses. Only two of these legendary rock bands remains capable of crafting music that will make you incredibly excited. Try to guess which one...
#44 - Turning Tables
by Adele
Close enough to start a war,
All that I have is on the floor.
That leaves one song left for Adele in this year's countdown. Since 'Rolling In The Deep' made the 2010 cut, again, try to guess which one... I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Just kidding, it's 'Someone Like You.'
#43 - No Light, No Light
by Florence + The Machine
You want a revelation, you wanna get it right,
But it's a conversation, I just can't have tonight.
You want a revelation, you wanna get it right,
But it's a conversation, I just can't have tonight.
I know it's my own countdown and all, but come on... this is music. All of these songs just kick all kinds of butt. Not that we'd expect anything less from gods-amongst-us-mere-mortals like Florence Welch. 'No Light, No Light' is the kind of song that you never want to end; epic chorus, soaring vocals, beautiful film clip. All this Illuminati chatter is just a load of bollocks, isn't it? Stop questioning and go with the Flo...rence. See what I did there?
#42 - Snowflake
by Kate Bush
The world is so loud,
Keep falling, I'll find you.
The world is so loud,
Keep falling, I'll find you.
#41 - We Love
by Sneaky Sound System
By the look on your face, you need to get a new one,
Don't you tell your mother.
Sneaky!!! We love, love, loved their transformation into a dance act that can play with the best on the world stage. It's just a shame that like many of Australia's greatest acts in music today they don't get noticed as much as they should.
