Joining 'Music Video Mayhem' as a new feature this month is '10 and 1.' "Explain?" you ask. '10 and 1' will take a theme, present ten excellent tracks for your entertainment and then give you one real crappy one. Just to bring you back down to earth, you know? It's as simple as that. Please don't ask for any further explanation. Seriously.
So today, we're looking at cover songs, a genre of its own these days that we touch on every now and then but haven't given a dedicated post to. I recently heard Sara Bareilles' amazing cover of Coldplay's 'Yellow' and since then I've had covers on the brain, so here's ten of my favourites plus one song that should never, ever be covered.
THE 10:
Sara Bareilles - Yellow
originally by Coldplay
Johnny Cash - Hurt
originally by Nine Inch Nails
Alanis Morissette - My Humps
originally by Black Eyed Peas
Florence + The Machine - Postcards From Italy
originally by Beirut
Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World
originally by David Bowie
The Fugees - Killing Me Softly
made famous by Roberta Flack
Amanda Palmer - I Will Follow You Into the Dark
originally by Death Cab For Cutie
Mark Ronson ft. Amy Winehouse - Valerie
originally by The Zutons
Rufus Wainwright - Hallelujah
originally by Leonard Cohen
Pearl Jam - Keep On Rockin' In The Free World
originally by Neil Young
And 1:
Madonna - American Pie
originally by Don McLean
Ten amazing cover song and one of the worst we've ever heard. What are your own personal favourites?
Clare Bowditch did a fantastic cover of My Happiness for Like a Version. And Missing by Simply Red, Glorybox by Powderfinger, Boys in Town by grinners, boys of summer by ataris And my fave Hallelujah is Jeff Buckley...though that kid from that show did a pretty good job too!
