Music Is My Medicine
by Nayt Housman
Music is my medicine. Is it yours? I ask
the public 6 golden questions to find out if and how they use music to feed the
soul.
The other day I was doing a little makeup job and decided to take the opportunity and quiz the gorgeous Ronnie who’s face I had played with. Ronnie is 46 and describes her life passion as breathing. Good call Ronnie.
Who flicks your on switch and turns up the volume?
Ronnie: I’m embarrassed to say but it is still U2, which is kind of really antiquated now but yeah, they have their place and it’s just an emotional recall for me I think.
Why is he/she/they the pill that cures your ills?
Ronnie: Ah… Bono’s very passionate, he’s a very passionate singer and I love the way they… Yeah a very PASSIONATE band. But passion, like ‘good passion’ not, you know, ‘I want to kill you’ passion, not ‘Megadeath’ passion, just passion. Oh it’s SO angsty and passionate (laughs).
What kind of high does it give you?
Ronnie: I think it makes me want to have…what’s the one that makes you want to have sex? Not just U2 but when you get that into the music you just kind of…what is that chemical? Like serotonin or pheromones? I get PASSIONATE! It heats me up.
When do you find yourself craving musical relief?
Nayt: I think you just answered that one HA!
Ronnie: Yeah! *lols* Not that I have sex to music, I don’t. I mean it’s alright if people do but I think when I’m feeling angsty then I need it, I listen to it and it kind of gets the angst out a bit. I mean when I’m feeling really happy I listen less to that sort of stuff.
Where does music take you?
Ronnie: It takes me to a place where all of my senses are active whereas during the day I’m only engaging certain parts. So music kind of activates all of them, cellular, visual and auditory…you know, sympathetic nervous system etc; all those things are all activated at once. It’s kind of a very full feeling.
How do you share your music love?
Ronnie: I don’t because I’m a bit embarrassed. So it’s on the sly.
Sometimes the music you most love can be embarrassing but it can also be sexy. Sex can also be embarrassing but sexy too. Actually I find everything about sex embarrassing but typically hilarious at the same time. But what happens when embarrassing music makes you feel sexy?
I shall dub this ‘The Viagra Affect”. Not because it makes your genitals plump and tingly but more because it stimulates all your senses and musically arouses. It makes your ‘musenitals’ plump and releases those feel good brain chemicals that may or may not stimulate other physical responses. In this case I could probably call it something like a Bono brain boner. Too much?
Do you find yourself feeling flat and unable to 'perk' up even when a situation arises requiring you to rise to the occasion? Doctor Nayt’s prescription is to find a time when you can be alone or with trusted company, make yourself comfortable and pop a bit of U2, or any other band that causes similar sensory reactions in the CD player. Don’t force a reaction, just relax, allow your senses to be consumed and see where the soundwaves take you. Phew, is it getting hot in here?
