Song Review - Heart

Heart
by Imogen Brough

"What happened yesterday, seems like a million miles away..."

Imogen Brough hasn't been in the spotlight for long, but she's made an impact in the short time she has. She's appeared on The Voice, winning over Australia with her rendition of Florence + The Machine's 'Never Let Me Go', scoring herself over a million YouTube hits. Subsequently, her Counting Waves EP rocketed up the singer-songwriter charts. Counting Waves was a nice introduction to Brough's songwriting talents, her musical blend of Celtic influences and contemporary pop and featured a beautiful track called 'Heart'. As she prepares to take the next step forward in her career, 'Heart' receives a studio upgrade courtesty of Brough's fellow Voice-alumni, Michael Paynter (taking on production duties) and the final product truly shows off how stunning a performer Imogen Brough is.

This version of 'Heart' presents a confident vocalist ready to take on the world and if there's a homegrown talent you can envisage tackling markets away from our shores, Brough is as good as any to get behind. She's got the voice that can go from quiet, emotional lows to soaring, belting highs. She's got her own distinct sound and thankfully doesn't seem to be shying away from those Celtic leanings. And she's got the looks. Which I know, looks aren't everything, but there's no denying Brough is a beautiful woman and you've gotta use what you've got. Or something. The best thing about 'Heart' is that the track lives up to the title. This is pop music that isn't lacking in heart. There's a connection between the words, the artist and the listener that leaves you wanting to hear more.

Here's hoping radio gets firmly behind this one, because it's a kick in the rear that Australia's pop landscape could really use. All I'm going to say is that I'd much rather hear 'Heart' on the radio than Havana Brown's 'Big Banana'.

Matt Bond gives 'Heart' three and a half Ellie Goulding heads out of five...

Imogen Brough will be heading out on tour in support of Michael Paynter starting next week in Brisbane. Two of Australia's brightest emerging talents for the price of one. Sounds most excellent, yes? Yes.
