Song Review - Settle In

Settle In
by Pigeon
EP: Settle In (out now)

I had a friend once who liked to set things alight. Not that he wanted anything to burn down specifically, he just liked flames. During a house party once, he set the ‘for rent’ sign at the front of the house alight. They took a while to get anyone to move into that house, naturally. At the very end of a party once, in the wee hours of the morning, he and another friend decided it would be a good idea to set the palm tree in the back yard alight. For just a minute we thought the neighbourhood would go up in flames, but a bucket of water, a little of nature on our side and a relaxed attitude inspired by numerous beverages ensured that didn’t happen, thankfully (and dear readers, I don’t recommend you participate in these type of activities, learn from my mistakes).

In saying all this, if your house was on fire, what would you do? You’ve got a few options. Call the fire brigade, see if they can help. Grab a hose from your own yard or your neighbours’ (if they haven’t cut it up for any other purposes) and see if you can put a dampener on the flames. Or you could grab a beverage, settle in and see what happens, just like I did and like electro indie popsters Pigeon suggest on their latest track ‘Settle In’. Look, let's face it, that probably not what they’re literally singing about, but the sweet synths and beats with the altered chilled vocal singing about "this house is on fire" and settling in reminded me of those hilarious and sometimes almost disastrous parties I’ve been to in my time and Pigeon are from Brisbane, so maybe I’ve run into one of them at a flame filled party at some stage. Maybe not. Either way they make great party music.

Jo Michelmore gives 'Settle In' three and a half Roisin Murphy heads out of five...
