Top 100 Songs of the 1980s, #10 - 1

It's the end of the road for the ultimate 80s countdown, as It's My Kind of Scene unveils the top 10 songs of one of the craziest decades in the history of music. Over the past couple of weeks we've looked at hits from the biggest stars the 1980s gave us, from MTV superstars like Prince, Madonna and Michael Jackson to New Wave acts like New Order and Depeche Mode and eternal industry heavyweights like U2 and Elton John. So who's going to make the top 10? There's only one way to find out... read on!

TOP 10 SONGS OF THE 1980s

#10 - Living On A Prayer (1986)
by Bon Jovi

The ultimate sing-along for party people the world over... and it always will be. Bon Jovi have had many a hit over the years and are currently enjoying a bizarre resurgence in popularity after a random attempt at going country (only people with no talent go country, right J Simpson... no wait, that's too obvious. We'll just say Jessica S.) but their success will always be largely attributed to the masterpiece that is 'Living On A Prayer.'

#9 - Never Tear Us Apart (1988)
by INXS

Because saxophones DO have a place in rock music.

#8 - Like A Prayer (1989)
by Madonna

THE most critically acclaimed and well regarded (aka popular) song by the most successful female artist of all time deserves a spot on the list, right? A controversial video that came with the track, complete with black Jesus, makes it all the better.

#7 - Call Me (1980)
by Blondie

Madonna is good... Debbie Harry is better.

#6 - Tainted Love (1981)
by Soft Cell

#5 - Push It (1987)
by Salt-N-Pepa

Mostly for this exchange... "Yo, yo, yo, yo baby-pop, Yeah you come here gimme a kiss, Better make it fast or else I'm gonna get pissed, Can't you hear the music pumpin' hard like I wish you would? Now push it... Push it good. P-push it real good!" Gets me everytime...

#4 - All I Want Is You (1989)
by U2

Well, if you happen to be one of the zero people waiting to find out what my favourite U2 song is... it's 'All I Want Is You.' So there you go.

#3 - Where Is My Mind? (1988)
by The Pixies

Once again, we can see rock music take a turn for the better towards the end of the 80s, with incredible but underrated bands like The Pixies releasing some awesome songs. Would this have been commercially bigger if it was released in the early 90s?

#2 - Lovesong (1989)
by The Cure

Oh so good... oh so very good. One of those rare songs that are perfect in every single way. It doesn't get better than this... Oh, wait. It's #2. So, um, I guess it does get better than this. Awwwwkward.

#1 - Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) (1983)
by Eurythmics

Not a day goes by that the tune for 'Sweet Dreams' doesn't come into my head. I don't know why, I can't explain how this has happened... but I think that's a good enough reason to give it number one. Other than that, I can't think of a song that sums up the dominant musical ideology of the 80s more than this one. Well, with that... let's say goodbye to the 80s for awhile. Hope you've enjoyed the ride, I know I have... which I guess I should, you know... being my list and all. Um.. see you next time!

  1. OMG. I think I am in love with your music side Matt. Totally agree with all your choices here. Pixies definitely would have been huge in the 90's. Still haunted by them from Fight Club.
    Love your work
