The Medicine Cabinet #17

FELIX IS IN THE HOUSE
by Nayt Housman

Music is my medicine. Is it yours? I ask the public six golden questions to find out if and how they use music to feed the soul.

Felix by Nayt Housman

Oh hi there Felix! Can I peer into you brain for a moment? I can? AWESOME! Oh what an awesome brain it is. This is a 29yo brain in the noggin of a man whose life passion is a form of curiosity most of us are familiar with, learning. Felix says, “Wanting to develop my mind and keep my integrity,” is what makes him tick, which is something I can relate to in wanting to learn what makes others tick musically. Let’s peer into the window.

Thinking of music as medicine:

Who are the musicians and/or bands that flick your switch and turn up the volume?

Felix: The Pixies simply because I have a good memories of them, they’ve been around at good times, then probably Mogwai and also Midlake.

Why are they the pills that cure your ills?

Felix: There’s a philosopher who I’m trying to think of. A 19th century German philosopher who talked about music as being the highest form of art but more an art form that would let you lose yourself in it. Because when people listen and become lost in it they forget about their suffering. In some of the songs those bands play like maybe Roscoe by Midlake, the complexity of it is enough that I find I’m able to lose myself in it.

Is that an umbrella feeling for all three bands?

Felix: I think of each band as not only different, it’s like it’s own different musical style, but it’s had the context for me. With the Pixies I’ve been sort of drunk and it’s jived with that. I guess with Midlake I’ve also been intoxicated and what have you so…

What kind of high do they give you?

Felix: Mellow and comfortable.

When do you find yourself craving music for relief?

Felix: Traffic’s not a bad one, crowds of people and I need a distraction. It makes that lubricant for social interaction.

Where in life, home, and your world does music take you?

Felix: Introspectively even when I’m around crowds of people, even when I go to crowds of people, when there’s a gig on or something I find music makes me more introspective.

Some bands I guess like the Pixies takes me back to memories of really dingy house parties after punk gigs.

How do you share your music love?

Felix: I was a radio presenter on 4zzz for the best part of a decade…

Probably just linking things to people on the Internet, that’s how most people seem to do stuff these days, that’s mostly it. No one does mix tapes anymore.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“The very last person you want to lie to is yourself.” These are the words left with me by Felix. Do they ring true to you? They certainly sit heavily yet in a comfortable place within me. Why you ask? Music. Music has, maybe surprisingly or not, taught me a lot through life. I listen to the lyrics, which describe experiences, feelings and processes of the individuals who wrote them; I’m captured by the beats and melodies that carry the lyrics and suggest the tone and themes held within. From these experiences I can process my own and find comfort in a sense of unity that I am not alone in this world. Music is after all a tool for sharing and communicating among other things. The kind of music I connect with most is the kind of music that shares the truths of life, love, loss and longing and it’s the, which provides me an escape/distraction from the continuing cycles around me.

I shall dub this “The Scopolamine Effect” - music as a truth inducing, reality distracting, psychoactive experience. It has the ability to change our mood, open our minds, enhance our experiences and gives us an opportunity to reflect and critique ourselves based on the lives and shared experiences of our music heroes.

Doctor Nayt’s prescription tonight is, when life is spiraling out of control, the happenings around you are clouding your judgments or you simply need to be grounded within yourself, you should employ the services of the musicians who for centuries have created a kind of high provided by nothing else in this world. This after all is a high that can connect with our deepest feelings, can be felt through vibrations and the chills created down one's spine, can be seen in the words on pages and bodies on stages, can stimulate memories of smells, tastes and experiences of places and people and can be heard in the familiar highs and lows of instrumentation that carries our favourite lyrics. You should do this every night and day if necessary. There is no risk of detrimental addiction and it can be used over long periods without specific complications other than acute tiredness from dancing, hoarseness from singing too loudly or wetness in the ocular region from weeping.

Where Is My Mind? - Well Not So Much Is...

Madonna has nothing to do with the following words. I just always loved this picture of her.
This is MY blog post. Deal with it...

....But Where Has My Mind Been?
by Jo Michelmore

And so here we are, your final journey into wherever my mind is for 2013 and what a journey it's been. I remember when I first discussed with Matt the concept of wanting to write a new post, something with a little freedom that could take us anywhere where my thoughts took us. I remember having absolutely no idea where that might be. Now looking back, I love re-visiting the places I've been....

It started when I returned from Europe. You know I went to Eurovision this year right? Yes, I know you know, but do you reeeeeally know what that means? That means I saw this...

Yeah, I know, this was just another excuse for me to mention Eurovision, but as I've said many times this year, this is my post, deal with it. Regardless, after I returned from Europe we started this little journey into my thoughts and we started with The Pixies and the song that named it all...

...and then somehow my mind went into overdrive and I started talking about a boy I used to know and what I should have said to him all those years ago, and probably something I should say to a few other people I know right now...

...and then that bald guy led to thoughts of bald people which led to thoughts of Billy Corgan, of course, which led to thoughts about being a blogger and all it's benefits, of which there are many. Like the benefit of being able to tell everyone (hi four readers!) how much I don't like Coldplay...

...and then that song took me through a whole conversation about a dark mustard velveteen long sleeve top wearer. See? Don't you enjoy the places I've taken you. I never said they were great, I just said they were interesting and yes, dark mustard velveteen long sleeve tops ARE interesting, godamn it. Anyway, that dark mustard velveteen long sleeve top wearer then took me to my own personal routine, which is generally  -

I work, I blog, I work, I go to gigs, I blog, I eat out, I blog, I holiday, I work, I blog, I have a lot of friends to drink tea with, I blog, I bake, I blog, I sleep every now and then, I blog

and somehow that led me to someone I still adore...oh Jack, oh sigh....

and strangely someone with especially bad hair took me to my own hairstyle, which turned into someone else I adore with some very famous facial hair, Freddie Mercury, who sported a facial hair style loved and admired by our own K-Tizz...

...which somehow took us straight to the 90s and a group not so much known for their facial hair at the time...

...which obviously took me to dreams of California, and no one thinks of California without thinking of notoriously bad (plastic surgery, fake tans, Hollywood) and notoriously good (Miley Cyrus?) things...

...which took me straight to my very favourite title of any of my posts, ever. Ready? Let's relive it again.

'Haim, Not Ham'

C'mon! That's comedy genius! You know you laughed out loud! C'mon! I've been to all sorts of other places too and you've loved them all! Like you've loved Katie's Sizzle, Nayt's Candy Shop, Matt's 10 and 1's (yes, that Ke$ha Goes To Dinosaur Land was comic gold), glimpses into the life and drinking habits of Lou and her amazing reviews and my posts.  Regardless of where we've all taken you in 2013, thanks so much for reading (Mum). You, dear reader(s), you know what? You rule. Until next year, where I promise to take you to all sorts of fabulous and not so fabulous places...

Where Is My Mind - The Best Month Of My Life...

My mind is on stuffed animal pants, that's where my mind is....

...A Cup Of Caramel Coffee And Yes, Where Is My Mind?
by Jo Michelmore

Hey! How are you? It’s been so long, I’ve missed you. Honestly! You knew I was gone, right? I was on holiday in many beautiful countries across Europe. It was probably the best month of my life. There were a whole bunch of awesome days in 2012, but not a whole month in a row. Yep, probably the best month of my life.

That brings me to here. The month after the best month so far, a laptop, this blog and a cup of caramel coffee. I know. Caramel coffee, right? Probably the best thing ever (except for that month I had in Europe and a whole bunch of other awesome things). Why am I drinking a cup of caramel coffee? Well, come with me here, let me take you on a little journey and adventure into the mind of Jo…

It started with my hair falling into my eye today, at an inconvenient moment when I had my hands full and couldn’t remove my hair from said eyeball...

This got me thinking about how much my hair has grown over the past month while I was in Europe, (probably the best month of my life)...

Which got me thinking about Germany, one of the places I loved in Europe, which got me thinking about coffee, because every morning my travelling buddy would get me a cup of coffee for when I woke up...

Which got me thinking about all the awesome things I drank in Europe...

Which got me thinking about the amazing markets I went to in Berlin, where I drank beer in the sun at 11am while watching a band...

Which got me thinking about which bands I was going to write about on this here blog when I got back home, which got me thinking about not wanting to be back home but on holidays instead...

Which got me thinking about Europe again and the incredible Belgian waffle I ate in Brussels, which didn’t have caramel sauce, but should have...

Which got me thinking about what I was wearing when I ate that amazing waffle, which was a super cute dress and a scarf in my hair...

Which got me thinking about another time I wore that dress, which was to one of my favourite cafes, where I always get a salted caramel coffee...

Which got me thinking, I’m going to have a caramel coffee tonight….and here we are.

See how my mind works? I've given you an insight into how I think and from now until I get bored with the idea, I'm going to take you on a little journey every week. We're going to start with one song and that song is going to take us to another song and that song is taking us to another song and so on and so forth. Each week I'm going to present you with a song and every song will have a link to the one before and the one after, so every week you get an insight into the life and mind of Jo and in the end you can tell me where my mind is...maybe? I'll give you an example...

Since we're talking about how my mind works, let's start with this little track...

Where Is My Mind? - 1988
by The Pixies

Well, I'm not the world's biggest fan of The Pixies, but there's something about this song I kinda love. It's that "oooh ooh" isn't it? It just gets stuck and it's so easy to sing along to it's hard not to; especially in the car, driving long distances. The Pixies, they just never quite made it, did they? The alternative musicians-musicians. The cool kids in the 90's loved them. This song featured on the 'Fight Club' soundtrack which almost propelled them to super star....no actually, it didn't. They were still that fat guy and the girl who played bass. Things must have been weird in the late 80's, because bands like this were competing with bands like this next one...

The Only Way Is Up - 1988
by Yazz And The Plastic Population

See? Nothing like the last song, at all, but I like that I can manage to link a Pixies song with a Yazz song. I'm sure this Yazz person has had a whole career doing...something, but really, her biggest claim to fame must be this, which is possibly one of the most annoying songs of the 80's. If you bother to listen to the lyrics, it's actually a statement about a class system, but who's going to listen to the lyrics when there's all that denim and those 80's midriff tops going on? It's so darn catchy which is what makes it annoying, it gets stuck, but you know what else makes it irritating? When someone replaces the word 'baby' in the chorus with 'Joey' while they're climbing mountains of stairs with you, as happened to me on my European holiday. It's annoying if your name is Jo and it's probably even more annoying if it's not. This song will never be the same for me again. As I sang those lyrics over and over again, that got me thinking of a song that also had 'up' in the title....

Uptight (Everything's Alright) - 1965
by Stevie Wonder

Oh you have no idea how much I love this song. Actually, I just said it, so now you do. How good is Stevie Wonder? This was was the first song he ever co-wrote and considering everything else he wrote (let's ignore a lot of the mid-80's here) this was a pretty good place to start. He was 16 when he wrote this! What were you doing when you were 16? Are you 16? What are you doing with your life? Get off this blog and do something important. No wait, stay, do something after you've read this! Stevie Wonder always reminds me of this song...

Higher Ground - 1989
By Red Hot Chili Peppers

Yeah, I was a big Red Hot Chili Peppers fan for a little while there. Still am. I thought that life couldn't get better when I found out one of my favourite bands had covered one of my favourite Motown artists of all time. Did you know there have been thirteen members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers since the early 80's? Flea is probably the only one to have worn the teddy bear pants though.  Where do I get me some of them? Screw this onesie trend, why isn't there a teddy bear pant trend?

Where are the Red Hot Chili Peppers going to take us? Who's to say? We went from The Pixies to Yazz to Stevie Wonder then to RHCP! We could end up anywhere next! How great is this? Where is my mind? I don't even know. You'll have to read again next week to find out....
