When last we checked in with Gold Coast band Double Lined Minority, I was liking their pop-punk sound, but admitted I was a bit old for their music’s target demographic. Two years have gone by, the lads have finished up high school, are heading into their 20s and their sound has matured with them. That’s not to say their music isn’t still geared at a teen market, but they’ve definitely shown growth in all areas, as shown on the catchy track ‘Loved’.

Eddie Salazar’s vocals are more confident, giving off that great late 90s/early 2000s Blink 182-ish post-punk attitude. The writing has improved too, and there’s plenty of snappy lines in the track to get you singing along. The best singalong moment comes towards the end of ‘Loved’, after a little guitar solo, and reminds me (in a good way) of a segment in Paramore’s ‘That’s What You Get’. I don’t dip my toes in the post-punk/pop-punk genre that much these days (old fella), so my comparisons are sadly outdated.

Pop-punk is a tricky, fairly niche genre these days, but there’s still a ready-made, dedicated audience in disenfranchised teens the world over. I think they’d be big fans of Double Lined Minority, who have shown they’re going to keep getting better with each release. Hopefully their upcoming 2014 release will get them a lot of deserved attention. And they’re still better than Short Stack. Are they even a thing anymore?
