Chained
by The xx
Album: Coexist (10 September, 2012)
The second snippet of amazing from The xx’s second album Coexist, to be released in September. There’s a slightly off beat drum, a spine tingling use of cymbals and an intense yet restrained guitar that make this a beautiful track, but what makes it spectacular are the battling vocals of Romy Madley-Croft and Oliver Sim, circling each other with the words, “we used to get closer than this, is it something that you miss?” It feels like listening in on a private conversation and it’s such a perfect song it’s easy to get lost in the moment until, at the climax of the discussion, it ends, suddenly, leaving the listener with nothing and breathless for more. It’s that strange concept of less is more which they’re mastering that makes The xx as fabulous as this track proves them to be.

Augury
by Big Tree
Album: This New Year (2012)
There's this song I have loved for years that I listen to every now and then and can't help but smile. It's called 'Whole Wide World' and this band I had never heard of called Big Tree had recorded it. Despite my fondness for the track, I never hunted down anything else by them. Does that happen to you? You love one song by someone but never listen to anything else from them? It must happen to someone else. Anyway, today I stumbled upon this song 'Augury' by Big Tree. Already I imagine that it's a song that I'm going to be listening to in a couple of years time and having a little smile to myself. Sweet lyrics and even sweeter voices drive a track that, much like 'Whole Wide World,' builds nicely to its satisfying conclusion. It's about time I stopped stumbling upon Big Tree and started listening to a whole lot more of them. Their album This New Year is the perfect place to start.
