Chained

The second snippet of amazing from The xx’s second album Coexist, to be released in September. There’s a slightly off beat drum, a spine tingling use of cymbals and an intense yet restrained guitar that make this a beautiful track, but what makes it spectacular are the battling vocals of Romy Madley-Croft and Oliver Sim, circling each other with the words, “we used to get closer than this, is it something that you miss?” It feels like listening in on a private conversation and it’s such a perfect song it’s easy to get lost in the moment until, at the climax of the discussion, it ends, suddenly, leaving the listener with nothing and breathless for more. It’s that strange concept of less is more which they’re mastering that makes The xx as fabulous as this track proves them to be.
