New To The Scene - Nick and Liesl

Nick and Liesl

Last week we had a good listen to one amazing emerging acoustic duo, Brisbane's Texas Tea. This week, we're heading down to the Central Coast in New South Wales to embrace the music of another amazing emerging acoustic duo, Nick and Liesl! The Aussie/Swedish folk-pop combo have been earning quite the reputation since the release of their debut LP Feather last year, touring extensively through Australia and Europe to rave reviews. Their music is instantly likeable; two voices that grab your attention alone that also come together to provide seamless harmonies, deliver memorable tunes and leave you wanting to hear more.

Witch's Brew (Feather 2011) by Nick and Liesl

There have been favourable comparisons for the pair to Angus and Julia Stone, Katie Noonan and Sufjan Stevens. On a song like 'Witch's Brew,' that firmly held my attention (and had me hitting repeat as soon as it finished... four times), I'd say there are some similarities to the early works of The Civil Wars. I say that more in the sense that, like The Civil Wars, Nick and Liesl beautifully build ambience within their music that puts you at ease, allowing you to enjoy the atmosphere and world their voices and lyrics are creating. Feather seems like it houses a bunch of songs that will offer the same gateway into the minds of Nick Everitt and Liesl Karlsson. Yeah, I'm looking forward to hearing all of it.

Judging from their reviews, seeing them live is something that's going to have to happen pretty soon. You want to too? Guess what? They're touring now! Here's their remaining dates...

Aug 15 - Astra Lodge - Falls Creek, VIC
Aug 17 - The Albion - Albury, NSW
Sept 1 - The Newsagency - Sydney, NSW
Sept 9 - supporting Mark Seymour at Lizotte's - Kincumber, NSW
Sept 15 - Living Smart Festival - Lake Macquarie, NSW
Sept 22 - The Berry Hotel - Berry, NSW
Sept 23 - Jamberoo Pub - Jamberoo, NSW
Sept 28/29 - Caloundra Music Festival - Caloundra, QLD

Looks like I'll have to venture to Caloundra. Yee-haw? Nick and Liesl will be playing alongside He Said She Said, Ball Park Music, Lanie Lane, The Whitlams, The Living End and a whole bunch of awesome Australian acts... and John Butler Trio. See what I did there?

Happy Is Simple (Wyong River 2008) by Nick and Liesl
