Frank and Nancy: Normal... |
Dance crazes, country standards, rock and or roll, surfer pop and a duet that makes you a little uncomfortable. You've got all that (and more) to look forward to as we kick off the Top 100 Songs of the 1960s! Early top ten guesses can be submitted now. Who's going to make it to the top? We've got nine posts to get through before we hit the top ten, so let's get to it. The countdown starts now!
#100 - Somethin' Stupid (1967)
by Nancy Sinatra and Frank Sinatra
As long as you don't think about Nancy being the Frank's daughter, 'Somethin' Stupid' is actually quite a lovely ballad. Of course, now you won't be able to think of anything other than the fact that Nancy is Frank's daughter. Try not to be too creeped out... it's just a song.

#99 - The Twist (1960)
by Chubby Checker
Sure, 'Let's Twist Again' might have a slightly catchier chorus, but that song is also a well executed, but still cheap, attempt at cashing in on the success of 'The Twist.' That alone gives 'The Twist' the spot on the list. It also brought attention to one of the lamest dance crazes of the decade, The Twist. So You Think You Can Dance: The 60s would be such a good show!

#98 - Wild Thing (1966)
by The Troggs
"You make every-thing... groo-vay." So bad, it's good.
#97 - Hit the Road Jack (1961)
by Ray Charles
You must admit, 'Hit the Road Jack' comes in handy if you're dismissing someone named Jack.
#96 - I Get Around (1964)
by Beach Boys
Now, while I wouldn't listen to this every day, on repeat and sing the chorus loudly in my car... every now and then, possibly once a year, it can be a lot of fun to listen to some Beach Boys music. My advice is to make some time for yourself, listen to their music and then never speak of it to anyone under the age of forty-five.
#95 - Stand By Your Man (1968)
by Tammy Wynette
So ladies, when you feel like being a bit of a town-bike because your man's being a massive douche, just remember, he's only a man and you need to get back in the kitchen, bake him a pie, then wash his clothes. Preferably not in the kitchen. That's what this song's saying right? Regardless, it's one of country music's classics and was even given the #1 spot in CMT's Top 100 Country Songs countdown. The song scores more points for inspiring Hilary Clinton to remark she, "wasn't some little woman 'standing by my man' like Tammy Wynette." Except for that time everyone found out your husband was cheating on you with a skanky intern and you... stood by him? Well played, H-Clints.
#94 - Take Good Care of My Baby (1961)
by Bobby Vee
This song defines the sappy nature of pop music in the earlier years of the sixties and I'm almost embarrased to say that I love it. Almost. Imagine if the parents thinking that Bobby Vee was such a 'bad boy' heard Enrique Iglesias' 'Tonight (I'm F**king You)?'
#93 - I Will Follow Him (1963)
by Little Peggy March
#92 - Twist and Shout (1962)
by The Isley Brothers
#91 - Gimme Some Lovin' (1966)
by Spencer Davis Group
Apparently leaving the 'g' off the end of a word was to the 1960s as using a $ instead of an 's' is to today. The Spencer Davis Group must have thought they were being so hardcore. Ke$ha sure showed them!
One down, nine to go... it can only get better from here, so stay tuned!
