Katy Perry: Cool... kinda 'spacey.' |
3 videos enter, but only 1 will leave as the dominant video of the week. Let's meet the competitors...
Katy Perry ft. Kanye West - E.T.
First things first; I am a massive Kanye fan, but adding him to this song does nothing for it. "Tell me what's next, alien sex." No. Just... no. The video? Perry's last three singles have gone to #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 ('California Girls,' 'Teenage Dream' and 'Firework). When something like that happens, a record label will pretty much let you do whatever you want. Katy chose to attempt to create a science-fiction music video to fit the 'alien' theme of the song. Money would not have been spared to create the sometimes inspired images we see. Some things work and some things don't, but that won't stop it from being lauded as the bestest thing to happen since the last "epic" video was released ('Born This Way?'). Let's focus on the positives; the Wall-E style rubbish dump, complete with vintage music to open the clip is perfect and instantly gets your interest levels up. Kanye floating in space is cooler than what he's rapping and Perry's metamorphosis from alien to, um, human-alien makes for some sweet visuals. Her arrival at the waste factory of robots gives us her best look, but nothing amazing happens from here on in. Now, let's get to my favourite part... the Vogue sunglasses.
Dear Katy,
It's been ages since we've talked. How you doing gurrrrl? Anyway, I've got some friendly advice for you. If you're going to bitch out other artists (Spears, Britney and Lavigne, Avril) for shilling merchandise in their videos, DON'T TURN AROUND AND DO IT YOURSELF!! You went with the whole, 'if it's integral to the story, sure do it.' I really would love to hear how Vogue sunglasses fit in with the whole alien theme. Anyway, keep doing your hypocritical thing.
Kind regards,
Your #1 fan.
Fleet Foxes - Grown Ocean
What more could you want from a documentary video? Watching 'Grown Ocean' is a nice way to spend five minutes, but it's not exactly a revolutionary video.
TV on the Radio - Will Do
Much like 'Grown Ocean,' 'Will Do' is a nice watch, but once really does feel like it's enough. The song is amazing and will have you reaching for repeat, but the video won't necessarily be coming along for the ride.
Winner - Katy Perry
The competition wasn't exactly strong and even though there were some issues with 'E.T' it still stands out as the video of the week. What say you?
