The Ronettes - Be My Baby
Album: Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes (1963)
Yes, this is the oldest song I've ever featured on this blog. It's also one of the best songs I've ever featured on this blog. It came on my iPod yesterday (shuffle, the inspiration behind what I choose for Song of the Day) and now I can't get it out of my head. 'Be My Baby' was Phil Spector's masterpiece, the best reflection of his Wall of Sound recording style. It's also been lauded with a multitude of accolades over the years; Rolling Stone listed it at number 22 in the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and it's been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Brian Wilson, of Beach Boys fame, lists 'Be My Baby' as his favourite song and American Bandstand host Dick Clark named it the record of the century. Not too shabby, right? I'd love to hear La Winehouse doing her slowed-down cover thing ala 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow' with 'Be My Baby.' That would be awesome.
