A to Z of the 80s - X is for A Place Where Nobody Dared To Go

And Now We Are Here
by Jo Michelmore

So close to the Z end of the A to Z and I could have written about a zillion 80s songs but now we have arrived at X we see there was no need for any of them, because now we are here, there are two things.

1. If you were alive at any time during the 80s, you should know this song.

2. If you were not alive at anytime during the 80s, you should know this song.

A place where nobody dared to go
The love that we came to know
They call it Xanadu....

It's worth every second of the three and a half minutes for that last note. And if you get there then yes. You're welcome.

The Candy Shop #28

Nayt. Skate. Heartbreak.
by Nayt Housman

I had a relationship that has been on and off since I was 12, but Friday night it all came to an end. I’ve blogged about this relationship before and decided to rekindle the love again. That’s right, I was in love with Roller Skating but our last date ended badly. This is what went down.

It was like old times, I arrived, put on my skates, my friends arrived and it was all “Xanadu” fantasy like.

We got rolling, it was freeing, like we’d never stopped. Music sounds better with you baby.

Then some skank got in the way, all up in my stopper. I had nowhere to go but dowwwwwwn. Bitch got in between us and it was a wreck.

I could only see one thing keep me from totally falling on my arse. A boob. I grabbed a boob. It didn’t go down well (just replace “pillow” in “everybody needs a bosom for a pillow” with “handle”).

My night was over. I was a mess my relationship had abruptly ended and I couldn’t even put my shoe on or walk.

I woke up Saturday morning; I knew something was dire, so off to the Accident and Emergency I went.

Diagnosis? Broken ankle and broken heart…

The lesson learned? Love is a bloodsport...

So that’s it. This is my farewell to Roller Skating. It’s been a beautiful relationship but for all the happiness you brought me, you caused more pain. I loved you Roller Skating, but we can no longer be together. At least not until my ankle heals…

Lessons In Love
by Nayt Housman

Chocolates are a versatile treat, given at the beginning of relationships, in the middle of relationships and at the end of relationships, to mark all sorts of occasions. Anniversaries, commercial public holidays, to say “I’m sorry” or “I love you” or even “I killed your dog”. Let's look at some relationship scenarios where chocolates might be appropriate.

The Beginning

You’re The One That I Want
Olivia Newton John and John Travolta

“You look good enough to eat! I wonder if you taste like cherry liquors or strawberry crème?”
Oh those giddy feelings of new love. Everything feels bubbly and joyous and all we want to do is impress each other with fancy hip gyrating.

The Middle

 This Mess We’re In
PJ Harvey and Thom Yorke

“Babe I got you some chocolates! Plus we need to talk. I think we need a break… I slept with your dad… oh and the dog got hit by a car. But I don’t want this to mean we’re over!”

Plied with chocolates he hardly noticed the topic of the conversation. The way in and out of a man’s heart is through his stomach.

The End

Where The Wild Roses Grow
Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue

“I’m sorry I murdered you.”

Sure most relationships don’t end in bloody murder but the murderer in this story was surely remorseful and I bet he took a box of Roses chocolates and bunch of red roses to the murder site every year in memory of the love they shared. Parting is such sweet sorrow…or something.

An important tool in relationship manipulation is chocolate. Don’t underestimate their power of seduction and next time you find yourself in a sticky relationship situation remember;

“Snickers really satisfies”.

Song of the Day - Xanadu

Olivia Newton-John and ELO - Xanadu
Album: Xanadu (1980)

"A place where nobody dared to go, The love that we came to know, They call it Xanadu." You know what else is called Xanadu? My sister's unborn child. So this is a big shout-out to Sam with her favourite song in the whole world, 'Xanadu.' Now all I have to do is convince her to call her bub Shaniqua and my life is complete. I will indeed be... in Xanadu. Won't you join me? I'll throw in Sarah Blasko's amazing cover from Cinema Blasko to sweeten the deal. ONJ, DMY!
