The Medicine Cabinet #19

Hello Raaaay
by Nayt Housman

Music is my medicine. Is it yours? I ask the public six golden questions to find out if and how they use music to feed the soul.

Ray by Nayt Housman

We learn a lot from our parents generally just by growing up in their presence but how much of your music taste do you get from your folks? During a recent visit back to the homeland (Rockhampton…) I basically forced my folks into being my patients so I could discover or more likely re-discover how much I’ve learned from them when it comes to music. This week I’m chatting with the “Mr Brady” of my crew, 65yo Ray. Now Ray these days, spends most of his time pottering in his garden trying to keep fit and healthy, whilst reminiscing about the days when cars, boats and motorbikes were the focus of his desires. So let's see, am I musically a mini Ray?

Thinking of music as medicine:

Who are the musicians and/or bands that flick your switch and turn up the volume?

Ray: Pink Floyd, Nickelback and um… Kylie Minogue. No not really but she’s alright. There’re thousands of them! I like all music. Don’t mind a bit of Deep Purple and Dire Straights I love.

An epic 95 minutes of sociopolitical disturbia...

Why are they the pills that cure your ills?

Ray: They’re mostly ones that can play guitar really good because I love listening to guitar music. And nobody plays banjo anymore, so… It’s pretty hard to buy anything that’s got good banjo music.

A generous yobbo mocking...

What about Mumford And Sons, they play banjo?

Mum (in the background): Oh I love Mumford And Sons!

Ray: George Formby playing Banjo Boy was the best thing ever. That’s what made me originally love banjos.

Diddle ding-ding, ding-ding, ding-ding dang...

Ray: Also because they make me feel good, relaxed, and happy, it’s just enjoyable.

What kind of high do they give you?

Ray: Just good enjoyable listening, they don’t do much else apart from that. They make me feel that I’d love to be able to do it as good as they do but that’ll never happen.

When do you find yourself craving music for relief?

Ray: Ummmm sometimes on a weekend if I’ve got nothing to do I’ll go down [to the shed] and put a record on or something or a CD, whatever. Then I turn it up so the rest of the neighbourhood can listen to it as well *laughs*.

Serving childbirth realness...

Where in life, home and your world does music take you?

Ray: Down to the shed so I can put the record or CD on. Pink Floyd takes me back to when your mother and I first moved into Lakes Creek Road together, I had a big Technics stereo system and I used to play 'Dark Side Of The Moon' flat chat and old Mrs Ford next door used to come over later on and say, “I heard your music!” We used to think, “Well if you didn’t there’s something wrong with ya. You’d have to be deaf!”

Mum: It used to make the house shake. That’s how loud it was.

How do you share your music love?

Ray: By turning the volume up!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now just for good measure.

I always ask my patients at the end of my interview if they have a mantra or motto that helps them through life. When asked, Ray’s response was “Can’t win, don’t try. That was always a favorite.” Maybe this explains my lacking ability to start anything particularly daunting and trying of my skills. This is probably the attitude that has lead me to a life of consuming my time by listening to music and dreaming of having their skills and distracting myself from the task at hand, so I guess I inherited that. As for the music itself, I can vividly remember many weekends running around the back yard while Pink Floyd blared from the speakers in the lounge room. I still adore Pink Floyd to the day. I also remember having not so fond memories of Dire Straights but with maturity have found a certain joy in their sound and intelligence to the lyrics. I’m sure Kylie found a little hole to nestle inside me too… HA!

Some of us like music for the beats, some for the emotion, some for the lyrical prowess and others, like Ray, for the technical prowess. There’s something beautiful in the precision plucked strings of a refined instrument other than just the sounds they create. It’s more than that, it’s the sheer love you can see on the face of the musician, it’s the time you know they’ve put into their craft, it’s the victory of watching them capture an audience, one that you’re part of; that feeling that you are part of their world, their story.

I shall dub this “The Fantasy Effect”. When we listen to music because it makes us think of what could be or what never was, we can imagine for those few minutes the song is playing or that hour the record is on that we have those skills, we are that musician, we’re in the band. I guess this is the kind of feeling that birthed the air guitar phenom or even Karaoke and lip-synching for that matter.

Doctor Nayt’s prescription is to grab your hair brush microphone, air guitar, air drums or whatever the hell you want to air play, head down to the shed, lock yourself in the bathroom or get up on the couch with your fave records playing and I want you to swallow those air fantasy pills and for just a few minutes become the best damn guitar player in the world. Your audience is freakin massive! THEY’RE GOING WILD FOR YOU! “Oh my lumping glob you’re the best instrumentalist I’ve ever seen in my life!!” That’s what your fans are screaming at you. Embrace it. Feel it. I dare you to. You will find yourself invigorated and feeling vibrant afterwards and that can only be a good thing.

The 2012 Anti-Scene Awards

Because for every action there is a reaction (or something), it only seems right to take a breather from celebrating the awesome and remind us that just like every year, 2012 wasn't all sunshine and roses. Later today we'll be handing out our final Scene Award of the year, Album of the Year! For now, let's get all snobby and address music's biggest dumps of 2012.

WORST COLLABORATION OF THE YEAR:

AHHHH!

BIGGEST LOSER: WILL.I.AM and BRITNEY SPEARS - SCREAM AND SHOUT
Just As Shit: Will.I.Am ft. Jennifer Lopez and Mick Jagger - THE (The Hardest Ever)

Will.I.Am's never-ending crusade to murder taste and trick the world into thinking he has worth as a solo artist continued this year. To the shock and horror of absolutely no one, he still manages to suck and blow harder than anyone else. Maybe that's why he's selling himself as 'The Hardest Ever.' His greatest crime in 2012 was destroying Britney's semi-decent post-breakdown run with the steaming pile of crap that is 'Scream and Shout.' You will scream. You will shout. You will want to pour Drano down your ears. If you think it can only get better from here, think again. The Black Eyed Peas head back to the studio in 2013. Live in fear.

WORST AUSTRALIAN ARTIST:

AHHH!

BIGGEST LOSER: REECE MASTIN
Just As Shit: Justice Crew

As offensive as songs like 'Rock Star,' 'Shut Up And Kiss Me' and 'Shout It Out' were, it was Mastin's version of 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' destroying my love for what's meant to be THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR (!) that earns him the nod here. And Reece, please don't mention someone of Eddie Vedder's caliber in your songs. I know, he's awesome. You... you are not.

WORST MUSIC VIDEO:

AHHH!

BIGGEST LOSER: NICKELBACK - TRYING NOT TO LOVE ME
Just As Shit: Christina Aguilera - Your Body

While there's still hope for Xtina, Nickelback are just too far gone. What am I talking about? They always sucked this bad. The video for 'Trying Not To Love Me' has old mate George creeping on a younger hottie and then things get extra lame when there's a fight for said hottie between George and his equally unattractive, slightly more Italian looking twin. Who wins the girl? Whoever makes the best coffee. Fuck that.

WORST MALE ARTIST:

AHHH!

BIGGEST LOSER: CHRIS BROWN
Just As Shit: N/A

You'll always be the biggest loser to me, Chris. No one else is at his level of shitness.

WORST FEMALE ARTIST
WORST LIVE PERFORMER
WORST ALBUM OF THE YEAR
LOSER OF THE YEAR:

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

BIGGEST LOSER: MADONNA - MDNA

Hey, Madonna... we're still fighting. Your album was the biggest disappointment of the year, your inability to remove yourself from that post 2000s mid-life crisis has gone way beyond boring and your mission to piss off the remaining Australian fans you have is a joke. And no one wants to see your nipples. You old now. Accept it.

New Music Monday #21

Muse!

Madness
by Muse
Album: The 2nd Law (2012)

Let’s do something different this week. Let’s look at this song in two ways and review it twice.

The first way? Let’s pretend we have absolutely no idea who Muse are and this is just a random song from some random band from some random place. Wow! A nice electronic beat, a solid bass line driving the song, a simple but lovely lyric about the madness of attraction; “I tried so hard to let you go, but some kind of madness is swallowing me whole” and an incredibly catchy backing vocal that is easy to pick up and too easy to continue humming long after the song is over. I need to know more about this band, if they’re capable of this kind of magic, what else have they got in store?

Jo Michelmore gives 'Madness' four Shirley Mansons's out of five...

Madness (Take 2!)
by Muse

The second way? Let’s talk about Muse. They've built a very large fan base around a particular sound, a particular way of song writing and rightly so. They’re a hugely talented band that has an incredibly loyal following. However, beside the familiar vocal of Matthew Bellamy, this song sounds so dissimilar to anything they’ve done before it can be hard to imagine this is Muse. The stripped back sound, the electronic beat, the 80’s sounding guitar and layered vocals about half way through, this is a track that’s going to divide their fans and that is something I really like. It encourages conversations about music (which should always be encouraged!) as well as showing maturity and confidence within the band. The ability as artists to understand their strengths and weaknesses and to experiment with them isn’t easy; it’s relatively rare in the commercial music industry and is something that should be applauded. Regardless of their history, as a song itself, Madness seems to have influences of so many; 80’s Prince, George Michael (before he got too annoying), Queen maybe even early U2; how could it possibly be bad with those kinds of influences? It couldn’t, regardless of whether you’re a Muse fan or not.

Jo Michelmore gives 'Madness' four Shirley Manson's out of five...

(Does that make 8 heads? No, it makes it 4. My review, my maths.) Total: 4 heads!!

Strange Love
by Karen O
Album: Frankenweenie OST (2012)

Frankenweenie-Strange Love-Karen O by braindamagedfr

If Tim Burton was to make a new film, what would he make it about? A boy who brings his beloved dead pet dog back to life, of course. If he needed to ask someone to feature on the soundtrack, who would he ask? Kimbra, Neon Trees, Robert Smith, The Flaming Lips and Karen O, among others, of course. If Karen O was to write a song for the film, what would she write? A sweet childlike love song, with a Theremin solo, backing vocals of dog barking sounds and the sweetest lyrics “when there’s beauty on the inside, the outside there’s nothing to change” of course. Does it sound weird or tacky or immature or silly? No, it sounds cute and catchy and perfectly matched to a Tim Burton film. How does she do it? A bit of attitude, a lot of confidence and an incredible skill for song writing. Easy. Easy if you’re Karen O, of course.

Jo Michelmore gives 'Strange Love' three Karen O's out of five...

NEW MUSIC VIDEO OF THE WEEK

Trying Not To Love You
by Nickelback
Album: My research skills have their limits... (probably 2012?)

George Costanza, what are you doing to yourself? We already know that you're a filthy old perv, but I didn't need to see the (admittedly PG) crap you think when looking at Gennifer (with a G). I will say this though; I was so confused as to how your stock fell so low that I completely forgot there was a Nickeback song playing in the background. For that, I say thank you. For the video I say...

Matt Bond gives the 'Trying Not To Love You' video one Chad Kroeger Lavigne out of five...

It's All Coming Back To Me Now - Imma Let You Finish Watching The Olympics, But...

And then this happened...

Imma Let You Finish Watching The Olympics, But...
Here Are Some Songs I'd Rather Listen To Than Watch The Olympics
by Jo Michelmore

There’s this event happening at the moment, you might have heard something about it. They call it the Olympics. I know, I know, they’ve been going for thousands of years, tradition, sports-person-ship, medals, blah blah blah. I don’t mean to be the negative one, and I don’t want to be a hater, but you know what? Right now, I hate the Olympics. I can’t think of much more boring than the Olympics. A whole bunch of sports I’d never watch, a whole bunch of people I’ve never heard of running around tracks, throwing things, swinging things, jumping on things, jumping into things, jumping over things, peddling things; the list goes on and on and I haven’t even mentioned my two least favourite things about the Olympics, the opening and closing ceremonies. They’re like embarrassing school plays that go on for hours, that you’re forced to sit through, to see a glimpse of something slightly entertaining which never, ever eventuates. They. Are. So. Boring. SO. BORING. See, I even capitalised that. There’s another thing I hate about the Olympics. The incredibly dreary and tiresome songs that come with the Olympics. This year? It’s something to do with Gary Barlow, because the host of this year’s Olympics, England, had to justify giving him an OBE, I suppose. What’s this all got to do with vintage music? This week, in celebration of our 1000th post and the most boring event of the last four years, I nominate the worst songs I’d rather listen to 1000 times than have to watch any more of the Olympics. They’re quite bad and just a small indicator of how much I dislike Olympics time. Thankfully, it's only once every four years.

Don McLean - American Pie (1971)

It’s a running joke amongst people who know me that I dislike this song. I’ve got news for them. It’s not a joke. I dislike this song. It’s just so damn boring. There are all sorts of rumours/thoughts/speculation about what the actual subject matter is, with the most popular belief that it’s about the tragic death of American clean cut singer Buddy Holly in 1959. Maybe it is about that, but I can’t ever get past the first minute to care enough to find out. This song goes for Eight minutes! Eight minutes! Yes, you read that correctly. This boring piece of snore goes for eight minutes. If I listened to that 1000 times I would be listening for about five and half days. That’s twelve days less than the Olympics run for. I still win.

10 and 1 - Lyrics That Make You Go Hmmmm

H. Duff: "What's that thing that happens when the light isn't off?"

Tuesday means it's '10 and 1' time! Since we've still got our first ever giveaway going on, I thought we'd look at some very questionable lyrics. Lyrics that are so inane, you'll be left wondering who would ever think they were a good idea at all. Ten of those and then one piece of excellent songwriting to remind you that there's still great lyrics out there. You probably know some that you want to use when entering our giveaway! Anywho, let's get the crapola out of the way first!

The 10:

So Yesterday
by Hilary Duff

If the light is off,
Then it isn't on.

Marge Simpson sums it up best, Duffster...

You're So Vain
by Carly Simon

You're so vain,
I bet you think this song is about you...

You want to know why he thinks this song is about him Carly? Does anyone really need to explain it to you? You're singing a song to him AND about him. Not quite the smartest move. Don't you agree (don't you, don't you)?

You Are So Beautiful
by Joe Cocker

You are so beautiful... to me.

This one has always left me a little baffled. Yes, it's innocent and sweet, but it's also a massive backhanded compliment. My dear, you're beautiful... but you're only beautiful to me. Everyone else thinks you're a dog. Is this just Cocker's attempt at getting laid easily? You know it.

When You Wasn't Famous
by The Streets

So when you try to pull a girl, who is also famous too,
It feels just like when you wasn't famous.

I beg your pardon? No, seriously. What did you just say in a public forum? There's only so much abuse of the English language one can stand.

A Thousand Miles
by Vanessa Carlton

If I could fall, into the sky,
Do you think time, would pass me by?

Look, I love this song as much as the next sixteen year old girl, but there's something about this line that just leaves me awfully confused. How does one fall into the sky? I don't think you can just fall into the sky, I think one has to be pushed... from a great height. On the way down, I don't think time would be passing you by, but I do assume that your life would flash before your eyes, right before you smashed into the ground. I just think it's wrong to assume that the natural laws of time and space will fly out the window automatically because you're falling into the sky.

Life
by Des'ree

I'm a superstitious girl, I'm the worst in the world,
Never walk under the ladders, I keep a rabbit's tail.

If I believed you were trying to convey that you're the worst person in the world when it comes to understanding superstitious beliefs, I'd be willing to let this one go Des'ree. I'm not buying it though. I think you're trying to say you're the most superstitious girl in the world and thus, you should know that it's a rabbit's foot that one keeps for luck. Keeping a rabbit's tail just makes you a monster. Poor bunny.

Favourite Damn Disease
by Nickelback

I love your pants around your feet, and I love the dirt that's on your knees,
I like the way you still say please while you're looking up at me,
You're like my favourite damn disease.

Look, Chad. No. Just... no. You get disease ridden bj's out the back of some barn-like-bar down south. Good for you, but there's no need to put it in writing. Excuse me while I go vomit.

Cater 2 U
by Destiny's Child

I'll keep it tight, I'll keep my figure right...

When you come home late tap me on my shoulder, I'll roll over...

Baby I heard you, I'm here to serve you,
Let me feed you, let me run your bathwater,
Whatever you desire, I'll aspire.

Want a foot rub? You want a manicure?

I would totally believe that Jay-Z is keen for a manicure every now and then, but other than that... way to go Beyonce and the other two! All they need is a tap on the shoulder and BAM... it's on. It's just too much from a group that preached the nature of being an independent woman. Waaaay too much.

I Am...I Said
by Neil Diamond

I am, I said, to no one there,
And no one heard at all, not even the chair,
I am, I cried...

Sweet, merciful Zeus. I've always assumed Neil Diamond lived in his own world, but I never would have thought that in the Diamond-verse there would be people-chair hybrids.

Life
by Des'ree

I don't want to see a ghost,
It's the sign that I fear most,
I'd rather have a piece of toast,
Watch the evening news.

Ghost, most, toast, boast, coast, roast, host, post, bedpost... Des'ree was just lazy. She could have kept that rhyme going forever. It should have been a little more like this; I don't want to see a ghost, it's the sign that I fear most, I'd rather have a piece of toast, then I can have a boast, down by the coast, while I eat a lamb roast, I make an excellent host, afterwards I'll send some post and then... something to do with bedpost.

And 1:

Both Sides Now
by Joni Mitchell

I've looked at life from both sides now,
From up and down and still somehow,
It's life's illusions I recall, I really don't know life at all.

That right there? That's great songwriting.
