The Medicine Cabinet #22

SLIP 'N' SLIDE
WITH DANIEL
by Nayt Housman

Music is my medicine. Is it yours? I ask the public six golden questions to find out if and how they use music to feed the soul.

Daniel by Nayt Housman

So in the name of being organised I sent out a Facey request for anyone who wanted to be part of my little question clinic. Last week's Charlie was the first of the bunch to get in on it and the next was the glorious Daniel. I also work with Dan but I knew little if any about his music love. WHO ARE YOU DAN? I mean I know you love your friends, family, movies, motorbikes and chillin but what about the music? Doesn’t anybody care about the music? Dan does. Dan cares about the music. Or does he? Let’s see.

Thinking of music as medicine...

Who are the musicians and/or bands that flick your switch and turn up the volume?

Daniel: Depending on what mood I'm in, if I'm in a raging mood it will be The Amity Affliction, and Asking Alexandria, or chillin out would be Dido or Chicane and lately Adore Delano if I’m in a party mood.

I'm craving when I'm DTF. Duh!

Why do you think they are the pills that cure your ills?

Daniel: The words to the songs often resonate with you depending on what mood you're in, you feel some sort of connection to the song through the words. Also just the music, no words just music, helps you just take a breath and relax.

What kind of high do they give you?

Daniel: Again depending on the song and the situation, an awesome high, an emotional connection that, sometimes only music can give you!

Party!

When do you find yourself craving music for relief?

Daniel: Before work, after work, chillin at home, out with friends, anytime is a great time!

Oooh look at me rage *headbangs*

Where in life, home, and your world does music take you?

Daniel:
Into myself, when listening to music, doesn’t matter what it is, it’s me time. I put the headphones in and it's my time. It takes you to a place where you don’t have to listen to anything/anyone else, just the music.

It's very that.

How do you share your music love?

Daniel: Random singing, turning it up so everyone can hear it!! Tellin friends of songs that I have recently heard that I like.

------------------------------------------------------

It’s proving to be quite a theme in answers that music is a part of everyone’s everyday and that is awesome if you ask me. Because to me that is exactly how it should be. There is music to match every aspect of life from the highs to the lows and having music around to match the daily themes feels as natural as breathing. Dan likes to say, “What’s happened, has happened, and it could not have happened any other way! It is what it is.” Which reminds me of another motto “Water off a duck's back.” Which reminds me of how music can serve us as a tool. It can help all situations in life to slide on by almost effortlessly, or at least make a gritty situation smoother than a one-night stand at the beach on a windy night. Some might say it’s like the butter on your bread that helps the meatloaf go down easier, or the oil on your salad that coats the roughage, the mucous trail that helps the snail navigate the rough terrain… You get the gist.

I shall dub this “The Cod Liver Oil Effect”. It doesn’t really sound good but it is. You know when you were a kid (I might be showing my age here) and it was “recommended” you have a teaspoon of cod liver oil each day? I goes down easy so things come out greasy and you’ll never have to experience the “rough edges” of a bad diet [of music], or something…

Doctor Nayt’s prescription this week is to get a big old spoon (your music player of choice) and fill it the hell up with a large oily helping of some gooooood tunes that will gather up the grit and chunks of the day and in the process of making you move and groove it will help all that crud just pass on through. Relieve all that constipated negativity and let it fall out into the porcelain pits of who the hell cares? In the end, what’s happened has happened and it could not have happened any other way. It’s not worth dwelling on the “what ifs?” and “whys?” when you have music to smooth the ride.
