New Music: Katy Perry, Kylie Minogue & The Verses

Looks like things are getting back to normal here at It's My Kind of Scene now that unofficial 90s month is over. It's been awhile since I've posted some new music reviews and I haven't managed to come up with anything exciting to write so... yeah. Here's some spanking new music, just for you.

Katy Perry - E.T. (Futuristic Lover)

Reviews haven't been overly kind for the future Mrs Brand's sophomore album, Teenage Dream. As much as I hate to say it, if most of the songs are like 'E.T.' I can see why. It's a fairly standard piece of electro-pop that kind of comes across like a slowed down discarded Gaga track. Now, I'm not a Katy-hater. 'California Gurls' was worthy of being a worldwide #1 and 'Teenage Dream' is infectious pop without the usual sleaze factor. Perry needs to focus on releasing albums that aren't 4 or 5 singles plus a whole lot of filler (like E.T.) if she wants to move from popstar to pop superstar status.

Kylie Minogue - Get Outta My Way

Kylie's second gay anthem (or ganthem) for 2010, 'Get Outta My Way,' looks set to tear up dance charts throughout the world, possibly even in the US. The song captures your attention, the video looks promising, if not slightly derivative of 'Slow' in a neon way, but ultimately it's pretty forgettable. Minogue should take a bit of a risk with her next single release off Aphrodite. 'Cupid Boy' would be perfect and might even appeal to a broader audience.

The Verses - Want Everything

Killing Heidi are one of my favourite bands. That probably loses me a lot of credibility with all you cool indie kids, but I don't care. Ella and Jesse Hooper wrote some of the best songs to come from Australian talent. Ella was one of the coolest women to ever front a rock band and her voice was incredible, the band's true drawcard. So I was kind of excited to see that Ella and Jesse had formed a new duo, The Verses, and released an album called Seasons which is out now. 'Want Everything' is the first single to be released from the album and it's a dramatic departure from the sounds we heard from Killing Heidi. More soft-rock and very chilled. It's like the Hoopers have been listening to Fleetwood Mac non-stop for the past five years and it shows. Their songwriting remains top-notch, Ella's voice is more at ease. Not as harsh but still beautiful. I look forward to iTunes-ing the album.
