I know a 13 year old who proudly announced recently; “the clip for ‘Fancy’ is the same as this old movie, I don’t know its name…did you know that?” which made me feel really old. Yes, I knew about Clueless long before I-G-G-Y and Ms XCX made their clip. But then I hear those beats and those words “first things first” smash their way through my headphones and age is irrelevant. And ultimately, when my 13 year old friend sings the words “I’m so fancy” she’s still pretending she is. We already know, I am…from L.A. to Tokyo. (Jo Michelmore)

Get out of my life you've been stalking me for days.

I don't know if it's the 'da-da-da-da' nature of the song or the creepy stalker-y aspects of 'Awkward' that keep it stuck in my head for days each and every time I hear it. And maybe that's a bit concerning. But forget about that for a second, because San Cisco gave us one of the catchiest, boppiest, stalk-iest indie pop gems of the past five years and for that I thank them. Still stuck thinking I'm a stalker? Listen to the track. Now Jordi's the stalker. Ha! Please note, we do not encourage or enjoy stalking. I don't think I've ever talked about stalking this much in my life. The power of San Cisco, ladies and gentlemen. (Matt Bond)

Ah, Marina and your diamonds, you make me so happy. There’s nothing better than a piano and cute voice to make me feel alright about the world. Pair it with a sweet little pop tune about vulnerability and a little helplessness and the world is just perfect. The clip with Marina looking a little scared, a little scary and a whole lot of fabulous matches the beats so well, it all takes me back immediately to a little time in my life I lived those words “guess what, I’m not a robot” and loved them. "It's you, it's you, it's all for you, everything I do." Say what you want about Lana Del Rey, but girlfriend delivers one heck of a festival singalong with 'Video Games'. Since I feel the need to remind everyone all the time, remember how I went to Glastonbury last year and it was the best thing ever? Yeah, well I did. And 'Video Games' was a big highlight as thousands of people sang along with a shoeless, smoking Lana Del Rey. Remember when the track first came out in 2011? We didn't know anything about the mysterious LDR. No one had gone snooping into her previous attempt as a music identity. The Saturday Night Live incident was yet to occur. What was that even about, I've forgotten already? All we had was this striking beauty with a haunting/mesmerising voice and an unforgettable debut. It was all retro fantastic and the whole world fell in love. Despite some vocal haters, she's still getting a ton of well deserved love today. (Matt Bond)

#76. YOUNG BLOOD

Promises, swear them to the sky.

It doesn’t matter where I am when I hear The Naked And Famous, every time I hear their sounds I smile a little smile and have a little dance. Admittedly, if I’m in a shop, sometimes it’s more of a sway than a dance, and if I’m in my car it’s more a head nod than a full dance, but get some TNAF on in my lounge and I’m a dancing machine. These are probably not images you need to think about. Things you need to think about are those amazing synths that kick off ‘Young Blood’ and the beats you can’t help but tap to. I haven’t even mentioned that line which is going to be stuck in your head for a good few hours long after you’re too exhausted to dance anymore, e-yeah-e-yeah-e-yeah. Sorry, couldn’t help myself. You know you love it as much as I do. Yeah-e-yeah-e-yeah. (Jo Michelmore)

#75. JUNGLE

I've been dreaming, dreaming about you, about us.

Emma Louise is the owner of some of the best indie pop that has been produced in the last five years. She’s also proud owner of one of the most random and amusing instagram accounts this country has ever produced, but that’s something for you to investigate yourself. While the remix ‘My Head Is A Jungle’ might have been the song that helped her achieve some international fame, the original ‘Jungle’ is where the magic is. The keyboards with an immediate sense of doom at the beginning, the beats rapidly matching the thoughts and Emma-Louise’s thoughts so very familiar; “and I’m complicated….my head is a jungle” because don’t try and pretend you haven’t felt that way at some time or another. Emma Louise is the proud owner of so much talent and definitely one of my favourite artists of the last five years.  (Jo Michelmore)

#74. I DON'T THINK YOU LIKE ME

Do you want to know what my favourite song of 2015 has been so far? No, it's not Redfoo's 'Juicy Wiggle'. It's Tired Lion's 'I Don't Think You Like Me'. Duh. It's the most effortlessly cool rock track we've heard in what feels like forever and leaves us wondering how this four-piece from Perth remains unsigned. Sophie Hopes kills it throughout, with a performance in the spirit of the likes of Vercua Salt's Nina Gordon and Louise Post. There's definitely a 90s vibe coming through, but it's not a 90s track if that makes any sense. It's 90s, but it's now. It's Tired Lion. We want to hear more. (Matt Bond) 

#73. WANT EVERYTHING

Most artists find it hard to move away from the sound they're most identified with. Ella and Jesse Hooper aren't most artists and seemed to have no problem transitioning from the alternative rocking Killing Heidi to their folk outfit, The Verses. When I first heard 'Want Everything' I couldn't help but compare the sound to Fleetwood Mac. So it was no surprise to see that The Verses had been chosen to tour with the music legends on their Australian tour back in 2009. From start to finish, 'Want Everything' is music perfection that shows off Hooper's strong talents as a storyteller. As much as I'm loving her solo adventures, I would be a huge fan of Ella teaming with her brother once again to see what else they can deliver. You know it would be awesome. And Fleetwood Mac's coming back this year... (Matt Bond)  

#72. ST. CLARITY

Let me be totally honest with you. I hadn’t listened to this track in a long time. The last time I probably heard it was at the end of 2013, when we placed it in our top 113 songs countdown of that year. It only took a second though, when I hit play and that beautiful banjo started strumming, why oh why had this one slipped from my orbit over the past year and a bit? I don’t know, but now that it’s back I’m not letting it get away again, those layered sounds and the build of emotion is enchanting and so truly delightful. I’m sorry Paper Kites, I let you get away for a little while there, but you’re not going anywhere now, I’ll let your sounds float above my head like that gorgeous bubble in your sweet little clip.  (Jo Michelmore)

When trying to decide what my favourite lyrics of all time are, I always come back to a song by The Dresden Dolls called 'Boston'. "There is nothing in the world that we can count on, even that we will wake up is an assumption." Jo being the best present giver ever gave me a necklace with them on it, she's awesome like that. Why am I talking about Dresden Dolls/favourite lyrics/great presents when I'm supposed to be talking about Dear Plastic and 'Epic Delay'? Because I think there's something really fascinating about music that talks/asks questions about things that make us uncomfortable. And what makes people more uncomfortable than the fact we're all going to die? That's why I love those Dresden Dolls lyrics. And it's why I love everything about 'Epic Delay'. It's talking about what keeps so many people up at night. What happens when it's all over? What happens to the people that leave us behind? What happens to the people we leave behind? Take that aspect of it away and we're left with the engrossing voice of Scarlette Baccini and mighty fine alternative music. This is a track I've only grown to love more with every listen and it's from an outfit I only want to hear more of, as soon as possible. (Matt Bond)

#89. HOLD THIS TIGHT

All my friends and I, we own the night...

I remember loving this song for its super chilled, relaxed feel, for its swing along keyboards and Luke O’Loughlin’s strangely inviting vocals. I remember seeing the clip and feeling a little jealous, it was so laid back I wanted to find my own space of water and float for hours. But the thing I remember the most is hearing the lyrics and being completely captivated, because the lyrics celebrated friendship and that’s something not celebrated enough. Put all those things together and you got yourself one of my favourite Australian bands from 2014.  (Jo Michelmore)

#88. YOUNG IN LOVE

Thelma Plum's venture towards a more electronic sound paid off spectacularly with last year's Monsters EP. We were already not so young and in love with all things Thelma, but tracks like 'Young In Love' made sure we'd be fans for life. Ok, we were already fans for life. The beat provided by 'Young In Love' by producer M-Phazes works as the perfect accompaniment to Thelma's reflective lyrics and commanding vocals. The focus is wisely placed where it belongs... on that beautiful voice that we can't get enough of. If the rumours be true-mours, a debut album will be coming our way in 2015. More of this kinda goodness please. (Matt Bond)  

#87. SINCE LAST WEDNESDAY

Highasakite appeared at number 77 in last year’s JJJ Hottest 100 and here they are at number 87 in our countdown. Someone who knows something about numerology might say something about that. Or perhaps not. This little band first came to my attention while I was scanning the googles after SXSW 2013, looking for who the googles were talking about. Up popped a band (whose name I had to read a couple of times) and when I found out they were Norwegian, well my love of that part of the world is no secret, so admittedly I was already hooked. You can compare them to indie rock all you want, but those hooks are all pop and the simple yet cutely odd lyrics have had me constantly captivated, since long before last Wednesday. (Jo Michelmore)

#86. THE LIAR

Speaking of voices we just can't get enough of... Kira Puru, ladies and gentlemen. Can any other artist rock a voice that's dripping with a 'don't fuck with me' attitude like her? I don't think so. Exhibit A - 'The Liar'. Case closed. Jo, Katie and I were first introduced to Kira Puru and The Bruise at BIGSOUND Live in 2012 and we were blown away by the band's phenomenal talent. The opening notes of 'The Liar' rang out, Puru laid down the law with the lines, "don't ask me what I'm feeling I've got answers up my sleeve and you and your denial ain't worth my while," and we were all hooked. The four-piece were so totally in sync, putting on a flawless performance of a track that's some hybrid heavy-soul-rock masterpiece. An incredible track from a band who should have been the talk of the town a long time ago. (Matt Bond)

#85. NEVER LET ME GO

But I'm not giving up

I'm just giving in.

Florence Welch has never shied from darker topics in her music. It's all violence and death and epic fantasy material and it's why I'm a big fan. Sure, she still covers relationships and love, human drama and all that jazz. But she goes about things in a way that's different to the indie/pop norm and I find it refreshing. Take 'Never Let Me Go' for instance. You're listening to it, amazed as always by the power of Florence's voice and all the other ear-pleasing sounds going on. And then you're listening again and again and you're thinking... so she totally drowned herself, right? Wow. That's bleak. Only in Florence's capable hands can a song, in which the central character kills themselves, called 'Never Let Me Go' which is actually about letting go be pulled off spectacularly. And that's more than enough for it to be named one of our favourite tracks of the past five years. (Matt Bond) 

#84. ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES

There's people there, they're just like me.

My love of sounds from the past is something I wear proudly on my sleeve. I was raised on sounds of the 60s and 70s, in my life. Whenever I have liked something current, someone would introduce me to wherever that sound had come from, because every sound has come from somewhere else, so my taste in music has become an interesting mix of old and new, ‘then’ and ‘now’. When someone from ‘now’ has an understanding of the ‘then’, it’s almost impossible for me to dislike it. So when Meg Mac’s voice from 'then' begins; “roll up your sleeves”,  I’m immediately drawn to the emotion, the bluesy piano screaming determination and that sense of courage in every hand clap is as encouraging as the line that repeats “everything is gonna be alright”. Meg Mac may be one of my newer loves, but with songs like this I expect she’ll be one that becomes the ‘then’ someday. (Jo Michelmore)

You know what it is? It’s quiet and introspective. It’s simple and it’s so complicated. It’s darkness and it’s light and strength and a vulnerability you’ve never really known before. It’s courageous and it’s a little beyond comprehension. It’s difficult and confusing but it’s also humble and calm. It’s so many thoughts, but really only one and it’s emotional and passionate and it’s everything you were. It’s just a pop song, but it’s oh so relatable and it found its way into the depths of my past and it’s tear jerking and it’s beautiful and it’s exactly as music should be.  (Jo Michelmore)

#82. DOJO RISING

But I'm lazy.

For anyone that gets all traumatised by clowns, I feel I should have probably told you at the start. But I'm lazy? Seriously though, watch the whole thing. You may find the clown's fate cathartic or something. What am I, a doctor? Other than the general dreamy factor that runs throughout 'Dojo Rising', I find I really love the track because the narrator comes off as such a jerk. Like, an actual asshole that has no idea what he's doing with his life. Which doesn't sound like Cloud Control's Alister Wright, so it's just a great story and something so different from the stories that we're used to. (Matt Bond)

A to Z of the 80s - L is for Love And...

...Also Lovin' And Loved And Luv

So some fashion recently may have had you thinking otherwise, but things have changed since the 80s. I was reading something the other day about common words that make up song titles (yes, I realise this makes me both a word nerd and a music nerd, I don't care) and it was talking about the lack of a certain word in current popular song titles and that word is 'love'. Songs with the word 'love, lovin', loves, loved' in the name have apparently declined in recent years. Even the fun spelling of love as in 'luv' peaked in the 90s and (thankfully) hasn't appeared much since. It got me thinking, what's that about? Do we hate each other more now or are we just not declaring our love/loves/luv anymore? Are we  heartbroken more, or less? We know the heartbroken are still around, or Taylor Swift wouldn't have a career, but why isn't she and everyone else for that matter, saying the word love anymore?


The year Taylor was born, New Kids On The Block were still declaring love in very high pitched voices, by boys wearing denim and tees. Yes, One Direction fans, boy bands had been doing this for a long time before Zayn left.

Which makes me think, maybe TayTay could do a duet with Zayn, like Lionel and Diana in 81. After all, dating his ex-bandmate and declaring your endless love is probably much better revenge than writing a song titled with your ex's last name, isn't it?

If she knows what love is, maybe T Swift should just declare it, like Alanah Miles did in 89. After all, I think she may have got some of her awkward dance moves from her.

But thinking about it, maybe T-Swizz needs to forget about it all together. She doesn't seem to have much luck, so maybe like Eddie Rabbitt did in 1980 (damn, pop slash country names were good in the 80s), she should just declare her affections for things other than boys. It may not be the greatest career move, but a rainy night won't leave her with a broken heart.

Then again, she hasn't had much luck. Maybe it will.

The Last 5 Years, #100 - 91

It's strange to think that It's My Kind of Scene has been around for five years now. Oh, we probably should have started with something like... HEY, IT'S OUR 5th BIRTHDAY TODAY!! But really... it's strange to think that we've been around for five years. Five is quite old for a music blog started on a whim with no clear direction. But here we are, still writing about all the music we love and still loving it... generally with no clear direction and writing whenever we have a spare moment. We might not have as much time to do it as we'd like, but we want to say thank you to all of our lovely readers who have stuck with us from the beginning, those who are joining us for the first time and everyone in the middle. If you're here, you're probably a big music fan too... so hey, high-fives to you! Jo and Matt were thinking of how best to celebrate and there's nothing we love more than a countdown... so we thought we'd take a look back at our Top 100 Songs of the last five years aka the It's My Kind of Scene years. We hope you have as much fun taking a look back into the kinda-recent past as we did. And as always... enjoy!

#100. THE MOTHER WE SHARE

And the mother we share will never keep our cold hearts from calling.

I am so glad the 100 songs we have chosen as our faves from the last five years have kicked off with this song, because it means I’m gonna love the song that sits at number one just as much as I love the song that sits here at number 100. Considering Matt and I came up with the list, that’s kind of a given, but that’s a technicality. I actually do remember the first time I heard this song, because I stumbled upon them through another band who’ll appear later in this 100 and those first sounds, as are the first sounds on Chvrches debut album, were as exciting then in 2012 as they are now. I loved everything about all of the beats and synths and voices and very quickly learned to love everything about the band that made them. Seeing them live and dancing, some would say bouncing, for 40 minutes straight, as well as screaming the words to this song at the top of my lungs (which had something to do with my love and something to do with trying to avoid a confrontation with the unusual patron beside me) confirmed my love. I think I’m going to love this countdown too. (Jo Michelmore)

#99. WISE UP

Think about, what lies ahead if you keep on, keep on going on...

Since we first heard 'Wise Up', we've had a lot of time for Perth's Ruby Boots. The musical project of Bex Chilcott, Ruby Boots has consistently shown that an Australian act can do Americana just as good, if not better, than her stateside counterparts. With a gorgeous vocal performance from Chilcott, lyrics that you can't get out of your head and a killer music video (literally), it's no surprise we're still loving 'Wise Up' just as much today as we did in 2012. The track was our introduction to an act that we've wanted to hear more and more from over the past couple of years and we're lucky enough to get to hear a whole lot more this month, when we get to hear the debut album Solitude... out April 24! #98. WON'T CRY OVER YOU

Over the last five years one of my favourite things about writing on this blog is some of the awesome artists I have discovered through one way or another by writing words and putting them on the internet. When those artists come from my home town, it’s even better. I’ve been lucky enough to see The Blackwater Fever numerous times over the past five years, and this song, with its driving bass and bluesy guitars was definitely always a live highlight. A little research tells me the three band members have been writing and recording again recently, so here’s hoping we hear a little more from them over the next five years. (Jo Michelmore)

#97. PISTOL

Preemptive heartbreak has never sounded so good. I mean, Mia Dyson wants you to use that pistol on her heart before it even starts. One of Australia's most gifted music makers and storytellers, Dyson broke our hearts and put them back together again just a a few times on her 2012 album, The Moment. 'Pistol' lands firmly in the former category with a bluesy jam that works as a masterclass in how to make a song that's equal parts passion and pain. That pause before the chorus lines still has me holding my breath today. (Matt Bond)

#96. BATTLE IN ME

Let's see which one of us is going to last the night.

I’m going to be completely honest about number 96, which is to say, this isn’t my favourite Garbage song, but it represents a band I have loved for fifteen years longer than this blog has been around, and I know Matt has a small adoration for a lot of their work as well. So much so, we did a Garbage countdown in 2012 and declared our love for twenty of their songs, therefore, it felt right to include this release from what was their fifth album Not Your Kind Of People, in our countdown. Hearing this song again has made me remember why I have liked them so much, because in tracks like this, Shirley is as strong and as alluring as ever and Butch, Duke and Steve pull the whole thing together with stops and starts and sounds just as awesome as they ever were. When Shirley repeats “shake it off” over and over at the end I can’t help but hope they can shake off the cynics that didn’t love their 2012 return and hope they’ll be back for some more Garbage magic, soon. #95. BIG JET PLANE

She said, "hello mister, pleased to meet ya."

First things first, the video for 'Big Jet Plane' is perfect. Everything about it was so well done. I was working in retail when I first watched the clip and was like, "girl... I know you're pain." Anyway, I love the video. Almost as much as I love the song, which made Angus and Julia Stone the biggest act in Australian music for their ARIA award winning Down the Way era. It was a Hottest 100 #1. And one of the really good ones, if not a slightly unexpected one. Not in a bad way though. There's a lot of people that describe this type of music as Aussie bore-folk and I really don't get it. When the music is this serene and the words are so well written, I'm never going to find it boring. And I'm happy to report a whole bunch of people feel the same way, if the continued success of the Stone siblings is anything to go by. (Matt Bond)

#94. GET LUCKY

So let's raise the bar and our cups to the stars.

Ah Daft Punk, those crazy helmet wearing Frenchmen. I saw them on the internets the other day hanging out with Jay-Z and his buddies to launch Tidal, and while that music streaming service is a whole other conversation, I couldn’t help but giggle at the sight of the two helmets shaking hands and attempting to talk about the importance of streaming music online. Do you think they screamed their opinions through the helmets at Chris Martin? Here’s hoping they head-butted him….I digress. This song, co-written with disco legend Nile Rodgers, screams everything disco did; funk, soul, pop, a heap of bass and a whole lot of 70s dance moves. It’s no wonder it sat at number 2 in our top 113 songs of 2013, because there’s something so catchy about that bass and still something that makes me want to move whenever I hear those robotic voices talking about getting lucky. #93. MOMMA'S PLACE

But that's just the arrogance of youth.

How can you listen to this and not want to dance? Or jump around, waving your hands in the air 'like you just don't care' style. When it came out (or was leaked, whatever) all the way back in January 2010, it seemed like the electronic music world would be Murphy's for the taking. But then we never really got a follow-up and Murphy would disappear from the mainstream (?) until her reemergence at the start of this year. It was a shame, because 'Momma's Place' was flat out fantastic and left fans wanting so much more. Maybe it was so good that a five year break was in order to truly appreciate it's awesomeness. Jokes, you can't help but appreciate it's awesomeness straight away. "You think you invented being bad?" Nay. That was all Roisin. (Matt Bond)

#92. ALONE WITH YOU

I will love this song forever. While I may not listen to it on repeat all day everyday, like I did in 2012, I still come back to 'Alone With You' every couple of months for a quick reminder of just how much I love it. Sometimes it will just show up in my head and I've got to listen to it ASAP. Those are always good times and there aren't a lot of songs I can write something like that about, so it really is easy to say I will love this song forever. And I have Phebe Starr to thank for that, one of It's My Kind of Scene's favourite acts. (Matt Bond)

There’s not much that Jessie Ware can do that I don’t love. Let me re-phrase that. I’m yet to know of anything Jessie Ware has done that I don’t love. When she started this song with the words “say you love me, to my face” it was obvious it was a song I was going to adore. Matt called it the love ballad of the year in our end of year countdown in 2014 and he was probably right. The desperation in Jessie’s voice is indefinable, indescribable and so very heartbreaking. These are all things that should be included in every good ballad. ‘Say You Love Me’ has all of those things AND a choir, so that’s it then, I’ll say I STILL love you Jessie Ware, six months later and I probably will for a long time yet. A to Z of the 80s - K is for Kanye...and Kim

But Not Of The Kardashian Type

Long before Kim married Kanye, there was a decade when being a Kim was actually cool. Yes kids, for those who can't read between the lines, I'm saying Kim (of the Kardashian type) isn't cool. I won't say the same for Kanye, no matter how much of a dick he is, but I'll always question how he ended up with a Kim of the Kardashian type. If he was a grown man in the 80s, would he have hooked up with another Kim?


Kim Carnes and Kanye would have been a perfect couple, because while Kanye declares himself a motherfucking monster, Ms Carnes spent her nights hiding from them in the night. Then again, who can say, maybe Kardashian Kim does that too. 

Or it could have been Kanye and Kim, of the Mel and Kim variety. After all, like Kim, Khloe and Kourtney, where there is one sister, there's another. And Mel and this Kim could have taught Kanye something he seems to know very little about. 

But I think my favourite would have been Kim Wilde. She and Kanye would have made a lovely couple and she loved American kids. But the best part?

If they got married her name would be Kim Wilde West. Even Kardashian would approve of that, right?
