Tkay Maidza is cooler than cool, which by OutKast logic would make her ice cold. But really, this Adelaide based electronic-rap prodigy is one of the hottest acts in all of Australian music right now. And it's only a matter of time before we can take the Australian out of that last sentence and just leave it as ...music right now. BIGSOUND Live could be where it all truly begins for a young woman already touted as one of our next great exports. So you know what that means? It means you're going to want to be there. How are you going to be there? By buying a ticket from the good people at QMusic. Duh. We are thrilled to have been able to ask Tkay some Q's and you get to enjoy her answers tonight. Hello and thanks for joining us at It's My Kind of Scene! How are you on this fine day?


Tkay: Hey Hey, no problem. I am prettttty goood!


First things first... Moustaches or beards?


Tkay: Beards I reckon.


BIGSOUND Live brings together a huge range of incredible acts from Australia and overseas. How do you feel being part of what's quickly become one of Australia's most well regarded music showcases?


Tkay: Bigsound is so cool! It's one of my favourite festivals because it's just all emerging fairly unknown artists and I love finding cool new stuff! So I'm pretty honoured to be a part of the line up.


For me, seeing musicians I may not normally be inclined to see is one of the best things about the BIGSOUND Live experience. You have a short space of time to play for people who may not know you or your material well. So, how do you decide what or which songs to play?


Tkay: It's so hard! I think you just have to kind of wing it and have a set that showcases your best assets, that's what showcases are about after all… so taking out songs that may be duplicates of each other.


Speaking of punters who may not normally attend one of your shows, have you got a fave memory of someone who may have come to see one of your shows? What about a least favourite? Gig from hell you don't want to re-visit? (Hopefully it's hilarious with hindsight?!)


Tkay: Ummmmm you always have people who come to watch your shows  that will say they have no idea how they ran into you! Which is so sick. I think the worst gig I’ve had is just a gig where i played to literally no one. It was also an interstate gig. Not very hilarious I felt like I did something wrong :(


It wasn't you Tkay. It was the people. It's always the people. If you get a chance to run around like a crazy person on the night/s to check out some other BIGSOUND Live acts, who would you want to see?


Tkay: I am definitely going to run around like a crazy person, I’m going to watch Alison Wonderland, Thelma Plum, SAFIA, Paces, Blaq Carrie and a couple of others. Pretttty excited.

*cough* Dream Collab... Tkay and Thelma *cough* Anyway, we all know of the awesomeness of BIGSOUND and we've all heard that SXSW is pretty darn good as well, but are there any other similar showcases in the world that you'd like to play, that we should know about?


Tkay: I think SXSW, Great Escape and CMJ would be amazing experiences. I really hope I get to do those sometime soon!

What have you got planned for the rest of 2014, post-BIGSOUND? Any tours, festivals, stand-alone gigs, cake decorating courses, TV marathons or anything else we should know about that you'll be involved in?


Tkay: I have some tours, Listen Out, Illy, Falls, my own club tour and a couple of supports. Pretty excited to get some music out and also excited for those new episodes of AWKWARD + AmericasNTM !!!


Do you love song covers? If you could cover one song, right here/right now... what would it be and why?

Tkay: Extraordinary by Clean Bandit….. or any Sam Smith song. Either one would be amazing. Can I just have their voices?


Something I often wonder. How often do you think to yourself; "is this the real life, or is this just fantasy?" I think the latter all the time...


Tkay: Yeah I wonder is this real life? Then I wonder if I could do it again or if I woke up then things would be different. SO weird could you imagine we were all just brains? And everything else that happens in a “day” is just this “brain” imagining it? It's not actually happening, it's your brain gathering images and imagining it! ok. no.


When they air the MTV Behind The Music special about you 31 years from now, what are they going to say about you?

Tkay: She was great. Avante Garde. Pioneer of the RAP BRAT WAVE. Legend. LOL idk. srsly

Srsly, let's just be best friends already. What? As if we're the only ones wishing we were hanging out with Tkay, stomping our feet like Brontosauri. That's the plural term, right? Tkay's set is going to go beyond must-see. You will NEED to see her at BIGSOUND Live. I believe it's at an outside venue due to fear of roof-blown-offage goodness. BIGSOUND Live 2014 + Tkay Maidza... it's going to be goooood. U-Huh!
