BIGSOUND 2014 - Text Review

BIGSOUND LIVE 2014
Fortitude Valley, Brisbane (10-11 September 2014)
Reviewed through the wonders of text messaging
by Matt Bond, Jo Michelmore and Katie Langley

BIGSOUND has become a yearly tradition for the It's My Kind Of Scene kids, after all, how could we resist two nights of all genres of live music across a variety of venues, right on our very own doorsteps? The answer is, we couldn't. This year, some of our faves like Tkay Maidza, Little May, Holy Holy, Thelma Plum, Coach Bombay, Saskwatch, APES and KINGSWOOD were playing, but the best part about a showcase like BIGSOUND is discovering all sorts of sounds and people we may never have heard otherwise. So, while one of our own is gallivanting across Europe (we missed you Nayt!) Matt, Jo and Katie took it upon themselves to tackle the massive event that BIGSOUND has become and see what music was loved, what was hated and what was observed on the mean streets of the Valley, across two nights and in a way we have come to love reviewing - via many, many text messages. Welcome to BIGSOUND 2014, text review style!

Steve Smyth...and his beard

Having caught a couple of Steve Smyth's songs, we make the tough decision to seperate and leave Steve at The Zoo, in order to try and catch some other artists nearby. Matt and Jo decide to head to The Rev nearby while Katie heads off into the night on her own to find the JBL Live Outdoor Stage at The Brightside...

Night two and after a feast of Vietnamese deliciousness in Chinatown Mall and a lot of observations of the fashion of BIGSOUND attendees, Matt, Katie and Jo head back out onto the streets of the Val to see what delights they can discover on night two. It starts at The New Globe Theatre with a band called Sharkfin, Shellfish, Sharkfish, Fishfin...Shellfin!

At this point, we seperate again, Katie making her way away from the many, many photographers at Tkay to find some peace at another venue, while Matt and Jo enjoyed the spectacle that was the audience at Tkay (overheard by nearby intoxicated, dancing patrons: "who is this girl anyway?"). The IMKOS crew came together again at Oh Hello to witness one of all of our faves, Little May...

And then, the madness that is two nights of live music ends in seperate style, where we all go our own ways to find our favourite last acts for BIGSOUND....

There it is, a jolly good show! And so, we come to the end of what has become one of It's My Kind Of Scene's favourite events of the musical year. Two nights of music, madness, fun and exhaustion. We saw music we knew we loved and found new music we didn't know we loved yet. Thank you BIGSOUND, until next year!
