LANKS - BIGSOUND Live 2014 Feature Artist

First things first, BIGSOUND is the realest... and it's shown it by selling out! That's right, the reports are in that conference + live tickets for this year's BIGSOUND showcase are goneskies. Or are they? The good people at QMusic have released a limited amount of bonus tickets to the live music showcase, so if you want to see artists like Little May, SAFIA, Tkay Maidza, Ruby Boots, Halfway, Coach Bombay or today's featured act, LANKS, you've got to get in quick! Where can you find these tickets? Head to OzTix, dear reader. Now, onto our chat with LANKS, another emerging Australian artist on the rise. Hailing from Melbourne, this one man electronic music making machine has been hard at work, recently releasing the brilliant new track 'Brave Man'. He'll be taking to the Ric's Bar stage this week to deliver what we already know will be a set to remember. Without further chit chat, here's our... chit chat... with LANKS. Enjoy!

LANKS
aka WILL CUMING
Performing as part of BIGSOUND Live 2014
Wednesday 10 September - 10:50pm @ Ric's Bar

Hello and thanks for joining us at It's My Kind of Scene! How are you on this fine day?

Will: Very well thank you. My new single just premiered online, so it's pretty exciting. It's also quite cold.

First things first... Moustaches or beards?

Will: Beards. I'm all about the beard, since I haven't been clean shaven for a couple of years now.

BIGSOUND Live brings together a huge range of incredible acts from Australia and overseas. How do you feel being part of what's quickly become one of Australia's most well regarded music showcases?

Will: I feel honoured to have been included in this line-up of stellar acts at the 2014 Bigsound. It truly blows my mind to be showcasing such a young project (first single came out in Feb) and to have been given that opportunity. I'm really excited to catch some of the other performers' sets there also.

For me, seeing musicians I may not normally be inclined to see is one of the best things about the BIGSOUND Live experience. You have a short space of time to play for people who may not know you or your material well. So, how do you decide what or which songs to play?

Will: It's a challenge, writing a set list for this kind of occasion. It's a short set, only 30 mins, and people might not be there the whole time so you can't just leave your big guns until the end of the set. I have already built up enough material with LANKS for almost an hour worth of songs too which makes it difficult. Mostly I went with the singles I have released so far, that people may possibly know, and there was a real focus on playing the songs that are the most fun and exciting to play live.

Speaking of punters who may not normally attend one of your shows, have you got a fave memory of someone who may have come to see one of your shows? What about a least favourite? Gig from hell you don't want to re-visit? (Hopefully it's hilarious with hindsight?!)

Will: It wasn't anyone famous, as far as I'm aware, but a punter came down to see my other band play a couple of years ago and half way through a song came up to the other guitarist and threw $300 cash on his pedal board, and asked if he could get a copy of our CD. The next day we were laughing about it and discovered that he had given one of the other members of the band $300 for a CD also, so we sold 2 CDs for a total of $600 that night. I still wonder if he woke up the next morning, looked in his wallet, and said, 'oh no, not again!'

If you get a chance to run around like a crazy person on the night/s to check out some other BIGSOUND Live acts, who would you want to see?

Will: I'lls, Remi, Saskwatch, LUCIANBLOMKAMP, Hayden Calnin, All Our Exes Live in Texas, Thief. The list could go miles longer than that, but that's a start. I'm playing at the same time as a few of these also which kinda sucks for me, hopefully some people still come to see me hah.

We all know of the awesomeness of BIGSOUND and we've all heard that SXSW is pretty darn good as well, but are there any other similar showcases in the world that you'd like to play, that we should know about? Anywhere else we should be dreaming of visiting before BIGSOUND returns to us, September 2015?

Will: I think I'd just love to hit up some festivals in Europe. That would be great. I speak a bit of German so I'd really love to go and play some festivals over there for their next Summer, if they'll have me.

What have you got planned for the rest of 2014, post-BIGSOUND? Any tours, festivals, stand-alone gigs, cake decorating courses, TV marathons or anything else we should know about that you'll be involved in?

Will: I just put out my new single, Brave Man, and I'll be doing a tour for that a little later in the year as well as being fortunate enough to be playing at Paradise Music Festival in late November. There will also be a few cool remixes dropping here and there and most definitely an album of Christmas jingles.

Do you love song covers? If you could cover one song, right here/right now... what would it be and why?

Will: I love other people's songs, but I'm never sure if I can bring much to the original. Like, I love it the way it is, and if I covered something I'd probably want to rip it apart and make it completely different. To actually answer your question, if I had to do one right now, it would probably be 'Graceland' by Paul Simon.

Something I often wonder. How often do you think to yourself; "is this the real life, or is this just fantasy?" I think the latter all the time...

Will: I mostly think that this is the real life to be honest. It's not that I don't find that an interesting notion still. I just think things are what they are, and then I love art/films/music because you can explore all sorts of crazy worlds that don't exist here in the real world, it's a chance to do anything and everything. Having said that, I do think the world is a pretty incredible place and at the rate that things have progressed for me this year there have been countless times that I have wondered how it has all happened so quick!

When they air the MTV Behind The Music special about you 31 years from now, what are they going to say about you?

Will: Probably that I am a prolific writer. I really just love writing and I make sure I sit down and write music as close to daily as possible. Music is really great huh?

Music's the best! You know who else is the best? LANKS. A huge thanks to Will Cuming for answering our Q's. He's definitely going to move to even bigger and better things in the coming months, so stay up to date with what's going on his musical world by checking out the LANKS Facey-book page. And don't forget to pencil LANKS into your schedule for Wednesday night! Oh... and get excited about the LANKS Christmas album. We think it's going to be called LANKSMAS. Merry LANKSMAS everyone!

Little May - BIGSOUND Live 2014 Feature Artist

Emergherd... Little May. We have had the biggest music crush on Little May's Liz Drummond, Hannah Field and Annie Hamilton ever since we heard their track 'Boardwalks' last year. And then we heard the follow-up 'Hide' and had some discussions about becoming Little May groupies... traveling from town to town where they were playing all gypsy like and free. What? They're that good. This year, the trio have earned a ton of play on triple J with 'Hide' and their 2014 single 'Dust' was recently added to their hit-list! So it should come as no surprise that Little May will be taking to the triple J Unearthed stage at BIGSOUND Live this year! You want to see them? Of course you do. So you'd better head on over to QMusic and get 'yo tickets while you still can. Joining us from Little May right here and now is Liz Drummond. With this chat, her third so far, Liz becomes our most interviewed performer on It's My Kind of Scene! Yay, friends!

LITTLE MAY'S
LIZ DRUMMOND
Performing as part of BIGSOUND Live 2014
Thursday 11 September - 10:40pm @ triple J Unearthed Stage - Oh Hello

Hello and thanks for joining us at It's My Kind of Scene! How are you on this fine day?

Liz Drummond: Hello, It’s My Kind of Scene! I am fantastic thank you. :)

First things first... Moustaches or beards?

Liz: Beards. I also like moustaches, but I feel like a beard is the foundation for a good moustache.

BIGSOUND Live brings together a huge range of incredible acts from Australia and overseas. How do you feel being part of what's quickly become one of Australia's most well regarded music showcases?

Liz: Like most up and coming Australian bands, making the BigSound lineup has always been a goal for us. We couldn’t be more excited and thrilled to be a part of it. It’s not everyday that you get to play amongst artists and bands that you look up to.

For me, seeing musicians I may not normally be inclined to see is one of the best things about the BIGSOUND Live experience. You have a short space of time to play for people who may not know you or your material well. So, how do you decide what or which songs to play?

Liz: We are still in the process of deciding on our setlist for BigSound. Seeing a band live can be a very different experience to listening to their record.  I think we just want to play what feels best and works seamlessly.

Speaking of punters who may not normally attend one of your shows, have you got a fave memory of someone who may have come to see one of your shows? What about a least favourite? Gig from hell you don't want to re-visit? (Hopefully it's hilarious with hindsight?!)

Liz: Seeing strangers turn up to our gigs is just generally a wig out. We are still used to playing to friends and family. Splendour was by far the most amazing gig we have played. There was a lot of awful gigs early on, for various reasons; broken equipment, bad sound issues, on-stage nipslips, inappropriate/awkward stage banter.

If you get a chance to run around like a crazy person on the night/s to check out some other BIGSOUND Live acts, who would you want to see?

Liz: Holy Holy, Art of Sleeping, Jesse Davidson, L-Fresh The Lion, Seekae, Spookyland, to name just a few.

Liz: SXSW and Great Escape would be insane. We were lucky enough to be announced to play CMJ in New York this year which is an absolute dream come true. Lets all go to New York please! Yay.

What have you got planned for the rest of 2014, post-BIGSOUND? Any tours, festivals, stand-alone gigs, cake decorating courses, TV marathons or anything else we should know about that you'll be involved in?

Liz: It's going to be a busy and incredibly exciting end of the year. We are releasing our EP on October 10. We will be touring Australia in November, although dates haven’t been announced yet. We will be playing CMJ in November, and then Rhythm and Vines and Rhythm and Alps in New Zealand over New Years.  Hannah may find time to watch pre-recorded seasons of My Kitchen Rules.

Do you love song covers? If you could cover one song, right here/right now... what would it be and why?

Liz: Yes I love covers. Right now? When You Say Nothing At All - Ronan Keating. Or Hero - Enrique Iglesias. Why? Because they make me feel alive. I know you feel the same.

Something I often wonder. How often do you think to yourself; "is this the real life, or is this just fantasy?" I think the latter all the time...

Liz: Yes. I watched the Truman Show when I was 9, and ever since then I have realised that my life is being filmed and everyone around me is acting. Cue existential crisis. I’m just a poor boy nobody loves me.

When they air the MTV Behind The Music special about you 31 years from now, what are they going to say about you?

Liz: Why didn’t Little May hashtag better on Instagram? Their hashtags suck.

#icouldbeyourheroliz

What? Now... reasons to see Little May at BIGSOUND Live:

They are amazing. Their music is amazing. You may or may not see nipple. I'm not saying Liz is going to slip a nip, but it looks like it's happened before. But seriously, don't be such a pervert, dear reader. These three talented ladies are going to be a standout act amongst the amazing group of assembled artists at BIGSOUND. You are not going to want to miss their showcase. We certainly won't be missing it! Massive thanks to Liz Drummond for hanging out with us once again... you're always welcome around these parts! Stay up to date with all things Little May by getting familiar with their Facebook page. You'll want to know when that EP drops in October!

The A to Z of Pop - U is for Under Dressed and Underrated

U is for unfortunate face

The A to Z of Pop
by Jo Michelmore

Call me crazy, but if I have the intention of leaving my house in the morning, there's a few things I like to do before I walk out the door. Generally the usual, you know, brush my hair, put some shoes on, grab my house keys, the personal rituals we all have. There's something I do though, that some pop stars seem to be able to get away without doing. I find it intriguing, because if I popped down to my local supermarket in the same manner, I'm not sure my fave checkout boy would appreciate it. Guess that's what makes me a blogger and not a pop star though. The U in the A to Z of Pop? It stands for under dressed.

"Ooh, it's a little chilly outside, I'll just pop a jacket on..." Um, Lady Gaga, perhaps some pants would have helped with the climate issue.

Gaga-no-pants, you are under dressed.

"Just picking up something I forgot at the supermarket..." Um, Britney, next time you forget something at the shop, you should check your outfit before you leave the house. You may have forgotten some of that too.

Britney-no-pants, you are under dressed.

"Just gon' head out and work on my fitness..." Um, that's the only thing people should be doing in sporting apparel, right? Miley, the next time you want to get some fitness on, perhaps you should remember your shorts. And trainers. Those heels will never work.

Miley-no-pants, you are under dressed.

"Wait Kim...!" Um, I have to give credit where credit is due, at least Kanye has his pants on. They may not be done up, but he's gone to more effort than Miley-Britney-Gaga combined and for that I say thank you Kanye.

Kanye-some-pants, you nay be loathed by many, but your pant wearing abilities are underrated.

Tkay Maidza - BIGSOUND Live 2014 Feature Artist

Tkay Maidza is cooler than cool, which by OutKast logic would make her ice cold. But really, this Adelaide based electronic-rap prodigy is one of the hottest acts in all of Australian music right now. And it's only a matter of time before we can take the Australian out of that last sentence and just leave it as ...music right now. BIGSOUND Live could be where it all truly begins for a young woman already touted as one of our next great exports. So you know what that means? It means you're going to want to be there. How are you going to be there? By buying a ticket from the good people at QMusic. Duh. We are thrilled to have been able to ask Tkay some Q's and you get to enjoy her answers tonight. So enjoy, u-huh!

TKAY MAIDZA
Performing as part of BIGSOUND Live 2014
Thursday 11 September - 9:40pm @ JBL Live Stage at The Brightside (Outdoor)

Hello and thanks for joining us at It's My Kind of Scene! How are you on this fine day?

Tkay: Hey Hey, no problem. I am prettttty goood!

First things first... Moustaches or beards?

Tkay: Beards I reckon.

BIGSOUND Live brings together a huge range of incredible acts from Australia and overseas. How do you feel being part of what's quickly become one of Australia's most well regarded music showcases?

Tkay: Bigsound is so cool! It's one of my favourite festivals because it's just all emerging fairly unknown artists and I love finding cool new stuff! So I'm pretty honoured to be a part of the line up.

For me, seeing musicians I may not normally be inclined to see is one of the best things about the BIGSOUND Live experience. You have a short space of time to play for people who may not know you or your material well. So, how do you decide what or which songs to play?

Tkay: It's so hard! I think you just have to kind of wing it and have a set that showcases your best assets, that's what showcases are about after all… so taking out songs that may be duplicates of each other.

Speaking of punters who may not normally attend one of your shows, have you got a fave memory of someone who may have come to see one of your shows? What about a least favourite? Gig from hell you don't want to re-visit? (Hopefully it's hilarious with hindsight?!)

Tkay: Ummmmm you always have people who come to watch your shows  that will say they have no idea how they ran into you! Which is so sick. I think the worst gig I’ve had is just a gig where i played to literally no one. It was also an interstate gig. Not very hilarious I felt like I did something wrong :(

It wasn't you Tkay. It was the people. It's always the people. If you get a chance to run around like a crazy person on the night/s to check out some other BIGSOUND Live acts, who would you want to see?

Tkay: I am definitely going to run around like a crazy person, I’m going to watch Alison Wonderland, Thelma Plum, SAFIA, Paces, Blaq Carrie and a couple of others. Pretttty excited.

*cough* Dream Collab... Tkay and Thelma *cough* Anyway, we all know of the awesomeness of BIGSOUND and we've all heard that SXSW is pretty darn good as well, but are there any other similar showcases in the world that you'd like to play, that we should know about?

Tkay: I think SXSW, Great Escape and CMJ would be amazing experiences. I really hope I get to do those sometime soon!

What have you got planned for the rest of 2014, post-BIGSOUND? Any tours, festivals, stand-alone gigs, cake decorating courses, TV marathons or anything else we should know about that you'll be involved in?

Tkay: I have some tours, Listen Out, Illy, Falls, my own club tour and a couple of supports. Pretty excited to get some music out and also excited for those new episodes of AWKWARD + AmericasNTM !!!

Do you love song covers? If you could cover one song, right here/right now... what would it be and why?

Tkay: Extraordinary by Clean Bandit….. or any Sam Smith song. Either one would be amazing. Can I just have their voices?

Something I often wonder. How often do you think to yourself; "is this the real life, or is this just fantasy?" I think the latter all the time...

Tkay: Yeah I wonder is this real life? Then I wonder if I could do it again or if I woke up then things would be different. SO weird could you imagine we were all just brains? And everything else that happens in a “day” is just this “brain” imagining it? It's not actually happening, it's your brain gathering images and imagining it! ok. no.

When they air the MTV Behind The Music special about you 31 years from now, what are they going to say about you?

Tkay: She was great. Avante Garde. Pioneer of the RAP BRAT WAVE. Legend. LOL idk. srsly

Srsly, let's just be best friends already. What? As if we're the only ones wishing we were hanging out with Tkay, stomping our feet like Brontosauri. That's the plural term, right? Tkay's set is going to go beyond must-see. You will NEED to see her at BIGSOUND Live. I believe it's at an outside venue due to fear of roof-blown-offage goodness. BIGSOUND Live 2014 + Tkay Maidza... it's going to be goooood. U-Huh!

Halfway - BIGSOUND Live 2014 Feature Artist

Hailing from Brisbane, the rocking and rolling/country 8-piece, Halfway is our next featured act for BIGSOUND Live 2014! They're riding high in 2014, with the release of the critically-acclaimed fourth LP, Any Old Love, winning them a whole bunch of new fans. We're thinking their BIGSOUND Live showcase is going to win them a whole lot more. Representing the band, John Busby joins us for a chat ahead of the event and you can check that out below! And don't forget, tickets are still available from over at QMusic, so make sure you get 'em while you still can!

HALFWAY'S
JOHN BUSBY
Performing as part of BIGSOUND Live 2014
Thursday 11 September - 8:50pm @ The Zoo

Hello and thanks for joining us at It's My Kind of Scene! How are you on this fine day?

John Busby: I am pretty good. I have seen Bob Dylan twice this week. So I am bleary eyed but happy.

First things first... moustaches or beards?

John: Neither. Clean cut. Like the Stones.

BIGSOUND Live brings together a huge range of incredible acts from Australia and overseas. How do you feel being part of what's quickly become one of Australia's most well regarded music showcases?

John: We feel pretty good about it. We are happy that they asked us to play and we will do our best to do a good job.

Seeing musicians I may not normally be inclined to see is one of the best things about the BIGSOUND Live experience. You have a short space of time to play for people who may not know you or your material well. So, how do you decide what or which songs to play?

John: We are still trying to work that out ourselves. But I guess we will just do what we always do and just play what we think is good.

Speaking of punters who may not normally attend one of your shows, have you got a fave memory of someone who may have come to see one of your shows? What about a least favourite? Gig from hell you don't want to re-visit? (Hopefully it's hilarious with hindsight!)

John: A few years ago at Bigsound, Steve Earle came to our gig. He came backstage and met everyone. That was pretty cool. Peter Jesperson (TwinTone Records/the Replacements) also came along to one of our shows at The Zoo in Brisbane.

As for gig from hell: We once played a show in Bulli and when we arrived our posters were up with yesterday's day and date on them. Let's just say it was a pretty quiet show.

If you get a chance to run around like a crazy person on the night/s to check out some other BIGSOUND Live acts, who would you want to see?

John: The Church/Jeremy Neale/Hits/Blank Realm.

There's so many great venues across the Valley hosting bands and musicians, but if you could play anywhere in the world, what and where is your dream venue to play? We all know of the awesomeness of BIGSOUND and we've all heard the SXSW is pretty darn good as well, but are there any other similar showcases in the world that you'd like to play that we should know about?

John: We will play wherever they will have us, but my dream gig used to be The Borderline in London, and I was lucky enough to play there a few years ago, which was great. If I had to choose another it would be the Union Chapel in London. That's a beautiful room with a great history.

What have you got planned for the rest of 2014, post-BIGSOUND? Any tours, festivals, stand-alone gigs, cake decorating courses, TV marathons or anything else we should know about that you'll be involved in?

John: We are releasing a 7" single called "Erebus and Terror". It will be the 3rd single from our new record and we will be playing a few shows in support of that. Other than that we will be working on songs for a new album.

Do you love song covers? If you could cover one song, right here/right now... what would it be and why?

John: Not particularly, but right now it would be "Workingman's Blues #2" by Bob Dylan. Because he is the best.

Something I often wonder. How often do you think to yourself; "is this the real life, or is this just fantasy?" I think the latter all the time...

John: It's all a dream.

When they air the MTV Behind The Music special about you 31 years from now, what are they going to say about you?

John: "They were good except for their black metal phase in 2020."

We're sending our thanks John Busby's way in the form of an imaginary fruit basket. You're welcome, John. You're welcome. But a huge thanks to John for taking the time to answer our questions. Halfway are going to deliver a killer showcase at BIGSOUND Live and you're not going to want to miss it! Now, stay tuned... we'll be back with more BIGSOUND goodness soon.
