Rainy Day Women - BIGSOUND Live 2013 Feature Artist

Rainy Day Women are making waves with the new single 'Ain't It Time' right now, scoring play on the j's and creating a whole lot of buzz online. This five-piece from Freemantle are heading to BIGSOUND for not one, but two showcases, which means you'll definitely have time to dance around to some fine WA indie-pop. On Wednesday September 11, Rainy Day Women headline the Channel [V] Stage at Coniston Lane and the next evening, they're performing as part of a WA Showcase (alongside Mama Kin and The Love Junkies) at Alhambra.


Ross Pickersgill, Rainy Day Women's guitarist, was nice enough to answer some questions from us about the new single, their upcoming tour and of course, BIGSOUND Live. Hey Ross, thanks for stopping by. Tell us a bit about yourself… Who are you and how did Rainy Day Women come together?


Ross: No problem. Once upon a time there was a boy named Dylan, Dylan went to school with some of the members of Rainy Day Women and they were musically inclined, so a band was born. After playing with those fine young men for a couple of years, Dylan then stole me (Ross) from one of his favourite local bands on the condition that I would always be his bunk buddy on tour.  Finally, as the logical last piece of the puzzle, the band acquired an Orangutan keeper to play the keyboards.


You’ve got the new track ‘Ain’t It Time’ out at the moment. It’s a slice of sunny indie-pop that’s earning you a lot of new fans. What’s the story behind the song?


Ross: That track came together over the course of a two night stay down south whilst we were scouting out a recording location. It was a very organic and fun song birth, we hope people can hear that in the song!


You’ll be heading out on a national tour to support the single. What do you love about touring and what’s the Rainy Day Women live experience like?


Ross: I really love the feeling of waking up in another city and knowing the reason I am there is to play music with my best friends. It's a bit of a corny sentiment but it's just a really wonderful thing. I'd like to think that the live experience reflects this and that people can appreciate the fun we're having on stage.


The tour kicks off with performances at BIGSOUND Live in Brisbane. How do you feel to be playing such an exciting music event? Anything extra special you’ve got planned as an incentive for punters to check out Rainy Day Women’s show as part of BIGSOUND Live?


Ross: These types of events are great, we're hoping to meet a bunch of new people. We have a really great show on the Thursday supported by WAM at the Alhambra lounge and it's a W.A. bands only event, so if people want a taste of WA music this would be a great show to attend and the line-up is filled with our friends' bands so, naturally, they're all rad!

If you’ve got the time (and aren’t playing when they are), what other acts do you plan to check out at BIGSOUND Live?


Ross: I'm really hoping that Eagle and the Worm do a show on the Thursday because we clash with them on the Wednesday. That would be awesome!


After the tour, what comes next? Any plans to record an EP or LP and if so, when do you think we’ll be hearing more from you?


Ross: We've finished almost all the tracking for our debut album so after the tour will be doing more work on the tying that all up and then we have some pretty cool unannounced shows in November!


There’s a lot of fantastic music coming out of Perth at the moment. If you could collaborate with any of your fellow local artists, who would it/they be and why?


Ross: Stillwater Giants - they're all just massive flangas and love smashing 100s of frothies.
